Kind of why I liked Fowler. He was actually useful when it came to intel, coverup, and being a conduit to placate high-up authority, but he wasn't always hanging around the base 24/7 and poking at things that should not be poked at lest they cause an episode plot.

I actually liked that. Instead of being (just) a MacGuffin that solved every problem, it caused quite a few - Ratchet getting jealous, Bee getting stabbed, Megatron getting resurrected, and Optimus having to order Sari to be effectively killed (or at least offlined) to limit the destruction she was causing.

they would need to be interesting, likable and relevant. very hard to acheive.
i think Mikaela Banes is a good candidate in those regards. she has a personal journey with her past as well as her putting up the cool kid front to hide who she really is. she can be both tough and friendly. plus, like charlie in the bee movie, her technical knowledge towards vehicles would be helpful. 07 should have really been focused on her and not sam. the titan mag comic was a good example of the potential she had.

I'd say well written, but that applies to any fictional character. I don't feel like it takes more work to make a human character likable than a transformer.

Now, assuming this is about the main human character, not humans in general, they should at least be out of high school. Any younger, and I'd be left wondering how they have so much free time and why their parents aren't constantly suspicious of what they're doing all day. I wouldn't want someone in the military in the role initially. I want the transformers' presence to be a secret at first, and them having an ally with government connections would make it more well known than I'd like. I also like the idea of the Autobots getting the space for their base on Earth from their human ally, since they'd have someone who could help them hide, so the human would have to have some sort of access or ownership to a fairly large building or other piece of land.

But if the story is on modern day Earth, then humans must appear in some capacity, no exceptions. Even if it's just background extras fleeing from a Transformer battle, I want to see humans. I like Cyberverse, but one of the parts I didn't like was the fact that a human literally only appeared once the whole time they were on Earth. It made the entire planet feel empty, and it was truly jarring to see no react to, for example, Grimlock rampaging through a city in T-Rex mode during King of the Dinosaurs. It was nice to see a series prove you don't need humans as main characters, but it went to far in minimizing their involvement.

I'm honestly pretty flexible on the human characters as long as they pull their weight and arent too annoying. I'd probably prefer an optimistic young adult that has some skill that then directly benefits or helps the autobots by having him around.
I'd also like the police force because I think military is a bit too big for robots in disguise, the fbi might work too but I think that maybe a bit too generic to have the companions be guys in suits...

There are a couple genuinely quite good human allies that I think could do well with being revisited conceptually.

My ideal human companion is some sort of fusion of Sari Sumdac and Bud Hansen-- proactive and surprisingly competent when the situation calls for it, but still very much a kid ruled by their imagination. Sari's praises have already been well-sung and she deserves all of it, but nobody really talks about Bud and I feel like that's a shame because Bud is a riot. In the English dub in particular he's consistently given the funniest lines and he's just this adorable little smartass.

I also genuinely quite like it when the Autobots have some adult government liasons, be they special agents like William Fowler, Director of National Intelligence Charlotte Mearing or just grumpy, too-old-for-this-crap cops like Captain Fanzone. I feel there's potential in having a Mearing-type character doing the kind of background work Fowler would occasionally have to deal with while there's a second agent that's more active in direct line of combat with the Decepticons and thus more liable to trust the judgement of the Autobots, leading to some conflict between the two. Of course, this also leaves the possibility of a Galloway-style antagonist to oppose them and wind up screwing everybody over through inaction.

And there's this idea for a Decepticon human ally that won't leave me-- a kid who grew up in a broken home and is pretty angry with the world, but ultimately isn't a bad kid, he's just been dealt a bad hand. He'd mainly join up with the Decepticons to get back at everyone who wronged him, but as the Decepticons' methods grow more extreme and destructive he realizes that this wasn't what he wanted and eventually jumps ship, becoming another Autobot ally and steadily learning to make friends and trust other people. It's sort of like a fusion of Cancer and Wilder from Masterforce.

Which isn't bad, and might work well as a fanfic, but as a canon character I can't help but think that the story would start to be about him, rather than about the robots. Then there's the whole issue of how you'd reconcile the Decepticons actively allying with a human. About the only possibilities I can think of are someone like Shawn Berger, where both sides are using each other, or a much smaller group of low-level, less angry/snobby Decepticons who aren't ideological fanatics and are operating as some kind of smaller cell, treating a disaffected teen or young adult as a kind of pet or mascot (which might fit your scenario better). In that situation, you couldn't really have the human encountering any of the major Decepticons.

This makes sense -- the top-tier Decepticons wouldn't have any time for a human who didn't provide them with some kind of practical advantage, and a kid wouldn't be able to do that unless he's a ridiculously skilled hacker like TFP Raf (who I ended up disliking because he was too... magical) or just useful as a hostage to keep the Autobots at bay.
