Another thing to consider is if you live in a house you can buy a 100 inch screen, front projector and ok sound system for around $2000 to watch these movies at home and be more enjoyable than sitting in a movie theater.

I hope theaters are still able to survive from this model because honestly being able to watch films the same day that they’re released in theaters at home is hugely enticing to me.

don’t get me wrong, I love the theater experience, but the ease and convenience of watching at home is so nice for those of us who just can’t realistically see everything we want at the theater.

Apparently Disney is calling for a secret emergency meeting tomorrow on how to deal with HBO's announcement and market against it.

I don’t think there’s any future for movie theaters at all. This is another step towards the end for them.

Many of us are getting flashbacks to the demise of companies like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video in the early 2000's.
Those were everywhere in the 90's then suddenly with in a year both companies were gone and you saw closed signs or going out of business on their windows.
It was like when Suncoast and Media play went down, some times you can see the writing on wall that a company or industry is on the way out because they won't change or adapt to the times.

For those not seeing the end of theaters, honest question: how do you expect the major chains to survive until it's save to congregate again? Whether the public likes going to the movies or not, it won't be safe to do for a majority of people until maybe May or June. And then, even if it's safe, if people can stream a big movie for free rather than buying some tickets and hiring a babysitter, don't you imagine they're going to? Especially after a year and a half of pandemic hardship. How does a company like AMC hold on until "normal" returns in, like, 2022?

Well HBO Max is currently only available in the US. So depending on how fast (or slow) they roll out internationally, most places will only have the option of seeing the films in theaters.

Of course if as you say, theaters remain shut until June, then these films will only be seen by a small (us based) audience.

This is also good news that Hollywood won't spend $200 million on mediocre wanna be blockbuster movies and spend another stupid $200 million to promote the movie and have to make $500-$600 million to break even. Kill the middle man that takes 50% and keep all the profit. It's a no brainier.
I haven't gone to a theater since February and don't miss it at all. I like downloading or streaming a movie to my 120 inch screen from home and can pause and watch it later.

Depends on the theater. I was paying $19 a month for a season pass at my local theater that allowed me to see one movie a day. The only thing it didn't include were movie parties and 3D versions, but there was a 75% discount on those.

Plus, there is a huge difference. I'd rather pay $15 to see a movie on a giant ass screen that is going to look 4K throughout the whole film rather than $15 to see a movie that is streamed on my TV through a service that is guaranteed to have quality drops and go out of HD several times throughout. Hell, chances are it may even have buffering issues and freeze up to load the rest of the film. Not to mention streaming has yet to be able to match the same audio quality you get in a theater even with a receiver and speakers. Most movies I have streamed don't even come out in uncompressed audio.

Agreed. I was legitimately looking forward to Dune myself.

Dune was supposed to be my Boxing Day parachute after seeing the in-laws. Alas.

I am curious if they’re gonna roll out internationally or not because I’ll be honest, eating my roast lamb and salad AND watching Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day would be a nice way to spend the day. I keep seeing HBO ads on Stan and thinking maybe they’re partnering with them for the Australia market because it would be easier since they don’t have to develop and support an App, or organise to take international payments and can instead just get a cut of the membership fees or take an upfront payment from Stan.

Keep in mind these will only be on a month then yanked off max. Many people are not reporting that part.

Matinee from 4 to 6pm is $6 here at our amc. It's $8 any other showing. Even the big city next to our small city is not that high! Glad i don't have those prices! Plus you don't get a avengers endgame type experience or a night out with the family sitting in your living room.

Ironic thing is with croods 2 doing better then they expected (but still small change over any other year) and demon slayer beating titanic overseas and breaking records in two countries movies future was looking better. In fact they just did a survey with most people who took it saying they plan to return to the movies when this is over and another big hollywood info saying movies will bounce back! Funny that it's the movies studios wanting to go to streaming so bad are the ones that are at risk of killing it in america!

Thanks to universal head killing the window to vod release time limit this is really bad for the movie chains.

Yup the bootleggers are jumping for joy! Mulan got hurt in other countries due to bootleg versions all over thanks to the disney plus version! They gave the bootleggers a nice hd copy. HBO is giving them a nice 4k copy to sell and leak online!

$8 is cheap. It hasn't been that cheap for a non-matinee in LA since... I dunno, maybe early 1990s. I remember it being $7 in the 1980s, ffs.

But still, you are only talking about one person. Even at $8, if you go with your significant other or whatever, that's already $16. But if you watch it on HBO Max, it's the same price whether you watch it alone, with someone else, with 6 other people, etc.
