Why are oranges called orange, but tomatoes not called reds?

 

The colour orange was named for the fruit, not the other way around. The word itself is corrupted / derived from "naranga" - in English and some other languages, it lost the leading "n", likely as a result of mishearing "a norange"  

To apply that principal to your original query, it the colour red would be called "tomat" or similar

Orange things were sometimes described as red such as red deer, red hair, the Red Planet and robin redbreast.
