I was at Target today to get a gift bag and bows for Christmas presents. My wife called and told me our vacuum just "blew up" she asked me to grab a new one since I was there. Now i got vacuum ads showing up on my Facebook, eBay, and Amazon. some scary shit
This happens to me a lot! Example different from yours. My husband order some STEM monthly box for baby ILD and I was getting ads for it on my FB. We do not share a phone or PC. He also likes to look at used cars from time to time. My FB marketplace picks are always used cars despite me never searching for it. Heck, he doesn't even look at them on marketplace.
For years they called people crazy when they said they(both governments, and corporations) were spying on people. But the truth is your personal data is valuable to a lot of people who would use to to try and advertise/sell their products to you. Just look at when Net Neutrality was appealed and how “down-low” that was kept. It has been known for a long time that Facebook and it’s other companies blatantly spy on people, yet idiots still fucking use it, and then they wonder if people spy on them? Then theres companies like Google. They don’t charge people for their service, so how do you think they make their money?
Yeah, I've also noticed that thing after installing Facebook Messenger, I think they should warn us of this before we even download the app.
No, I do not need or want: - Pen!s enlargement devices - Longer sex - Eastern European mail order brides - To help out a Nigerian Prince - exploits of Florida Man (okay, perhaps I do)
This really shouldn't surprise anyone. We've been selling our privacy for convenience/safety in America for years now.
It wouldnt have suprised me as much if i did a web search for a vacuum or looked online. My wife and i just spoke about it and i started getting ads
It happens to my mom and I so often, that we purposely do it to see if we can get deals to show off, we say shit like "Where almost out of Water bottles!" or "Man, I wish I can get a double of my ER Sunstreaker!" while pressing our phones to our mouth.
It was more likely the Target purchase that set it off rather than a phone discussion. Target claims to not sell or share data, but the card company that issues the credit cards probably does. Ebay is another one. Casually glance at one of their sponsored items and expect reminders, ads and offers immediately afterwards.
Watch Social Dilemma. I've given up. I just talk about workout equipment or a Solo Stove and my Instagram and Facebook feeds are lit up with ads. Sigh....
Reminds me of one time when my brother was on a phone and a family was speaking asian near him and for the next three days he had ads from Japan on YouTube.
My favorite was having a chat with my wife at home about an older model I built over and over again. The old Ertl F119 Stealth Fighter Concept plane, that ended up not being what the F119 actually was. I didn't look it up, just talked about it with her one evening when we were chatting about things we did as kids. Next day I get an email from Ebay filled with people selling that exact F119 model. Nobody can convince me our smart phones aren't constantly recording us and sending it all willy-nilly everywhere.
lol yeah i've had this happen with stuff i've looked at and (i don't think) i've ever said out loud or searched for. There is this truck on my street it has a add for their company in the rear window. Again i don't think i ever said it out loud and can confirm i never searched for it, the next two days i was getting FB and instagram ads....
I somehow feel lucky I don't have any social media accounts after reading all this. If and when I want something, I'll go look for it. I don't need anyone else showing me ads.
All I get are ads from websites I've visited in the past week. Unless it involves specifically non-EMD based HO Scale Chicago and North Western model locomotives based on steam or circa 1950s diesel prototypes under $100. I want to buy more of these, but apparently even the great ad machine of the internet can't find 'em!
Thats most likely just cookies at work. Their checking your cache and creating ads based around it. That said, I have a wonderful example that happened today. So, I have two Amazon accounts. One is for Amazon US, the other is for Amazon Japan. Both of these accounts are entirely separate entities. You can’t use your US account on the Japanese site, you have to make your own. They both were made using the same email. So, I’ve been using Amazon US all year, and have not ordered anything off of Amazon JP all year. I recently moved into a new place just a few months ago, changed my address for US as I still use. I had not logged on to my JP account until today, upon which I go to change my information and my new address is already in there. Now hows that happen Jeff? Both of my accounts are separate. Unless you were to guess that would be my address because of the other account I have with the same email? Thats a little personal, don’t you think?
