What Pokemon types would your favorite transformers be based on their personality, abilities, and/or alt modes? Besides just the Steel typing. (You also do what you think their types would be if the Steel type was not a thing)

I listed the Pokemon types for those who don’t know them. Also just like some pokemon your favorite transformer can have 2 types like Steel/ Fire or something like that. Here is the list of all the types below

    Water

    Grass

    Fire

    Ice

    Electric

    Rock

    Ground

    Steel

    Fighting

    Psychic

    Normal

    Dark

    Ghost

    Fairy

    Poison

    Bug

    Flying

    Dragon

    I'll start:

Armada Cyclonus is a Steel/ Flying
Armada Starscream is a Steel/Fighting type or Flying/Fighting

In Japan Dark type is called "Evil". It's supposed to represent sneaky underhanded tactics, while Ghost covers traditional darkness.

And Fighting is said to have more connotations of being "honorable" in the original Japanese (hence why it beats "Evil"), but that aspect is rarely actually explored with the pokémon themselves. (Like, pretty much just Lucario, the Muskideers, and Zamazenta.)

So yeah. Fighting would be common among the Autobots while Dark would be common among the Decepticons.

I wonder if there's anyone we could really give the Fairy typing to.....

Grass is also one not very many transformers would have, huh? Well, there's Botanica.

Well not completely, you've got the Beast bots from Beastwars.

Also shouldn't some versions of Bumblee be an eletric type?

Yeah. I also think it would be kinda interesting if Uincron Trilology Starscreams were a trio that emphazies sort of what you explained here.

    Armada Starcream Flying/Fighting
    Energon Starscream Flying/ Ghost
    Cybertron/ GF Starscream Flying/Dark

Maybe some versions of Arcee could adopt the Fiary typing? Maybe some of the city speakers could be Fairy type.

It's really hard to say since a lot of Pok'emon types don't even make sense in the first place.

There are Dragon looking Pok'emon like Charizard who everyone calls a Dragon despite not actually being a Dragon type. There are several Pok'emon who have wings and can fly but are not flying types while other Pok'emon who don't have wings and can't fly are flying types.

Magikarp's evolution is actually based on a fable of a fish swimming up a water fall and becoming a dragon so his evolution really should be water/dragon... but it's Water/Flying... Why flying I don't know it can't fly! It has no wings. It has no business being a flying type.

At least with Charizard I can kind of understand why they went with Fire/Flying. He actually has wings, he can fly, they were limited to only having two types, and they were required to keep the Fire type. So it was either going to be Fire/Flying or Fire/Dragon and his Mega Forms actually do both with the X form being Fire/Dragon and the Y form staying Fire/Flying. But you know what... IT STILL MAKES NO SENSE!!! All three forms look like dragons, all three forms still have wings. The only real way it makes sense is to add a third typing so he can be fire/flying/dragon.

The fact that there are separate types for Rock and Ground doesn't make sense either. THOSE ARE THE SAME THING!!! The ground IS ROCK, or rather several types of rock packed together. But still why are there two types for what is essentially the same element. Technically metal comes from the ground too but I assume that Steel types are meant to represent refined metals rather than raw materials.

Fighting type doesn't make any sense. All Pok'emon participate in battles so shouldn't they all be Fighting type? If only certain Pok'emon are fighting types then isn't it kind of cruel to force any non-fighting type to battle?

There's a Dark type but no Light type... and I know it's Evil type in Japan but there would still need to be a "Good" type to balance that out. Ghost types are almost the same thing as well which as a side note makes no sense for a while different set of reasons.

We see ghosts of people and other Pok'emon but they aren't ghost type Pok'emon. The Ghost types aren't souls of the dead they seem to just be born as ghosts already. The whole thing is just nonsense. Why not just call them all Dark types so we aren't left with this confusing WTF does it actually mean to be a ghost in this world?

And Normal types... a lot of them have been reclassified as Fairy types. They use to just stick normal on anything they didn't know how else to classify but now it seems Fairy is stuck on anything they don't know how to classify.

A lot of Pok'emon can learn moves that don't even match their typing... Inferno could not even be a fire type despite clearly using fire because Pok'emon types just feel totally random 97% of the time.

Because Transformers are robots fighting a war it does make sense for basically everyone to be Steel/Fighting but a lot of them probably won't be for no apparent reason. Decepticons can all fly so they would likely being Flying types except when they're not for no apparent reason. Starscream can have the Ghost type even when he's not currently a Ghost just because he's really the only character you can actually apply that typing to.

BW Megatron will NOT be a Dragon type because apparently a big red fire breathing winged reptile thing isn't a Dragon according to Pok'emon logic. Oh and Dinosaurs always have to be rock types... there are no non-rock type Dinosaur Pok'emon. That means Megatron, because he was originally a T-Rex... he's required to be either Rock/Fire or Rock/Flying when he turns into a "not" Dragon.

I get what you are saying, but there's one thing that I will sayI like the idea of pokemon being able to use attacks outside of their type because it makes the meta game and lore more interesting. Pokemon having access to moves that can counter other types that are super effective against it forces the players to pay more attention to other factors in a battle (like the pokemon’s stats and abilities) besides just the type advantage. Players also have more to play with when it comes to strategy. Lore wise I think it could potentially play into the reason for why regional variants change their typing.

I think, Gamefreak have a variety of reasons for why pokemon are given the types they are given, whether it is based on the nature of the animal or legend they are base off of, a gimmick, or some cultural reasons that are present in Japan but does not translate into American culture well or ect.

But what you’ve said has given me an idea so thank you. I will edit the post a little.

I think the regional variants thing was kind of stupid and ALSO doesn't make any sense.

For starters the idea is that they "Evolved differently" except that this is an entirely different concept of "Evolution" that is actually more accurate to how that word is used in the real word than how it's typically used in universe which is actually metamorphosis not evolution. And this just confuses things in universe cause now suddenly a Vulpix can evolve into a different kind of Vulpix?

Secondly regional variants have never existed before and makes no sense for them to suddenly exist now. Evolution is suppose to take BILLIONS of years but these regional variants just popped up over night. We've seen regions with similar environments many times before which did not have regional variants. In fact many people have pointed out that Alola is basically just the games version of the Orange Islands from the Anime. Which actually did have a regional variant except they were just pink color Pok'emon that got that way from eating the pink fruit that only grew on that one island. It didn't change their typing or anything and it wasn't something that could also be found in other regions. But considering Alola and the Orange islands have similar environments the same kind of Pok'emon from Alola should also be all over the Orange islands. I realize the real world reasoning for this but in universe in makes no sense for regional variants to just suddenly exist for no real reason.

Finally... the regional variants typing ALSO doesn't make any sense. Alola is a TROPICAL climate. Most of the variants in that region are Pok'emon who's ORIGINAL forms would be better suited for that climate than their Alolan forms. They're mostly ICE type Pok'mon who were originally Fire and Ground types... How the hell is an ICE type Vulpix better suited for a tropical island than a Fire type? How the hell is an Ice Type Sandshrew better suited for a sandy beach than a ground type? Why would the regional variants evolve to be LESS suitable to survive in the environment they're in?

Then there's Pikachu's evolution which I have a whole different rant for why that's stupid.

    1. Why did they make such a huge deal about him being able to surf? He's been able to surf since GEN 1! That's not new. I had a surfing Raichu in Pok'emon Red and later in Pok'emon Gold (the same Raichu). In order to do this in gen 1 you need Pok'emon Yellow. That's the only version of the game where Pikachu can learn Surf. He can't evolve in yellow though, Pikachu will actually refuse the Thunderstone if you try to give it to him. Mostly because Pok'emon Yellow was reworked to be more like the Anime. Anyway you can trade Pikachu with Surf to Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, or Crystal. Again he can't learn Surf in any of these other games, only Yellow version but you can trade him to the other games once he's already learned the move. Once Pikachu is no longer on Yellow then you can evolve him to Raichu congratulations you now have a surfing Raichu. But Alola acts like this has never been possible before. Even outside the games there was also a surfing Raichu in the Anime... in fact that episode is the whole reason they gave Pikachu surf on Yellow version in the first place. The animation of him surfing on his tail isn't even new. In the original Pok'emon Stadium Pikachu would pull a surf board out of his ass but Raichu would just ride on his own tail exactly the same way that Alolan Raichu does.

    2. With them making such a huge deal about Raichu being able to learn Surf, a water type move, you'd think that the Alolan form would be a water type... nope he's Psychic... Why don't they make a bigger deal about the new Psychic typing instead of the fact that he can surf on his tail which he's done since Gen1. Shouldn't the actually new Psychic type... not that the type itself is new but it's new for Raichu who is originally a pure Electric type now suddenly being Electric/Psychic that seems more news worthy than hey he can surf now... which he's already been able to do since 1998, that's not new in 2016. Being Psychic is new, being able to surf has been possible for 18 years. And why is he a Psychic type in Alola? Don't know, don't think they ever actually bothered to explain it, he just is.

As I already pointed out with Magikarp to Gyarados they actively ignore the legend they're based off of and still slap types on them that make no sense. There's no reason for Gyarados to be a flying type. The legend is about a fish that swims up a water fall and becomes a dragon. Pok'emon snap even makes a direct reference to this literally showing a Magikarp swim up a water fall to become a Gyarados. This doesn't translate into American culture well and I didn't even know about this as a kid. I thought that evolution didn't even make sense as a kid because they're such different Pok'emon design wise and most other Pok'emon evolutions look kind of similar to each other. But it makes sense once you know what the evolution was based on. Except for why he's a flying type despite having no wings, not being able to fly, he has no business being a flying type. The legend is about a dragon, I personally don't think he really looks like a dragon but that's my cultural bias. He should be a dragon type and for some reason isn't.

I don't think Gamefreak have any real reasons for the types they use, they just seem to slap whatever on there even if it doesn't make any freaking sense. And that's gotten worse in later generations. And by worse I mean more common. Most of the earlier generation Pok'emon actually make sense with the few exceptions I've already mentioned but once you get to about gen 4 or 5 almost every Pok'emon has a totally random typing that you'd never guess by looking at them. It's like they tossed a bunch of types in a hat and pulled them out entirely at random.

I guess I should also mention there's a Pok'emon who looks like a tree but isn't a grass type. Apparently his name literally translates to "Fake Tree" which is suppose to explain why he's NOT a grass type but doesn't help to explain why he IS a rock type... other than because rock is weak to water and someone thought it would be funny to torture this fake tree whenever a character mistakenly tries to water what they think is a plant. Why does such a creature even exist? Even with the explanation for why he's not Grass being that his name literally means fake tree it's still a really dumb design and such a creature could never survive when it's adapted to try to kill itself.

Your welcome... I'm glad my rant about the nonsense in Pok'emon was helpful. It's still an interesting thread idea by the way... even if the types often don't make sense.

There are some fan games that have changed the typing and designs of some Pok'emon but there's still some issues because of the 2 type limitations... and apparently people not understanding how multityping effects the strengths and weaknesses of different Pok'emon. Apparently a lot of people barely understand how 2 type combinations work and can't even begin to comprehend how 3 types would function if it was ever introduced... but some Pok'emon really need 3 types.

Oh yeah it also annoys me since they have gone back and changed the existing typing of older Pok'emon when Dark, Steel, and Fairy were introduced... like Magnemite was originally pure Electric because Steel didn't exist at the time. It also kind of bothers me that Blastoise wasn't changed to Water/Steel due to the giant metal cannons on his back. Even the Mega version which now has THREE cannons still isn't a Steel type.

Anyway... one of those fan games did an interesting thing with the starters. You know how they're always Grass, Water, and Fire cause it's a simple "Rock, Paper, Scissors" choice there. Except someone made a fan game where their secondary typing went in the opposite direction. Meaning for example if you have Fire, your rival chooses water because it's strong against fire. Except in this game the fire starter has a secondary type that's strong against the water starters secondary type. This essentially makes all the starters equals because no matter what the primary and secondary will balance each other out. I think it was Dragon beats steel, steel beats fairy, fairy beats dragon something like that. Which basically means Grass/Fairy, Water/Steel, Fire/Dragon. And now you have three starters that negate any type advantages they would normally have over each other.

    Lockdown is Fighting/Steel

    DOTM Sentinel Prime is Water/Steel

    Blackout is Steel/Flying

    Hot Rod is Fire/Fighting

Wondering if we have a Psychic Transformer. The closest I can think of is probably Quintessa from TLK for being a sorceress but she isn't a Transformer.

What about Maccadam/Alchemist Prime. He has the ability to see the past, present, and future all at the same time which often leaves him confused as to what Time Period he's currently experiencing. But seeing the future is a psychic ability so I think that counts.

RotF The Fallen also seems to be able to lift objects without touching them which could be a form of telepathy though he's actually manipulating gravity but still possible psychic ability there.

    Though I have a Sharpedo in Pokemon Go I've named Sky-Byte, and he's water/dark.

You know I was never quite sure why he was called SKY-byte in the first place other than the show not wanting to make up excuses for him to be in water all the time and having him fly most of the time rather than swim... though the series did end on him swimming so that was fun.

Anyway... wasn't there another Pok'emon who looks like a shark but is Dark and Ground for some reason?

    Whatever this dude's name is...

Maybe Sky-Byte would be Dark/Flying because every Shark Pok'emon seems to be a Dark type but they're not all Water types for some reason...

    Ok cool, and Thank you!

Windblade from Cyberverse could be considered a Psychic type. And maybe Soundwave, for a version of him is almost a mind reader right?

lol. Well almost Garchomp here is a land shark dragon with the Dragon/Ground type though it can also fly.

Dragon... not Dark... still not a water type despite looking like a shark.
