Yeah, that doesn't have any bearing on my point. Lots of stuff that can't draw an audience at the box office can sell niche merchandise to geeks like us. I'm not saying Predator doesn't have fans. I'm saying Predator doesn't have very much mass general movie-going audience support. No, the split with the theater and the gross deals aren't a fixed cost, they're based on what the gross is. Every dollar that comes in at the box office has to be split between the studio, the theaters, and any cast/crew with relevant deals in their contracts. The 2.5x rule is just the threshold when the studio's piece of that dollar probably starts becoming profit for them. I think the difference is that the Spider-Man movies are continuous, despite the reboots. Since 2002 we have averaged a theatrical Spider-Man movie once every two years or so. So basically Spider-Man movies have been in almost continuous production since 2002. The studio knows the audience is there, so when things get stale or go awry, they bring a new crew in to tweak it juuuuuuust enough but not too much and keep the machine rolling and the audience always comes back. The story line might get an official reset, but the brand has been non-stop. The stops and starts for Predator are the damning part. That's the time where they're sitting around not knowing what to do next because the last attempt didn't work.
I’m not sure you know this but merchandising is another revenue stream for movies. There have been 3 decades of product sales. And that’s not a few items on BBTS, that’s 5 pages of products ranging from $1500 to a couple of bucks. It’s also been 33 years since Predator was released and there have been 6 movies featuring the property. This is pretty funny at this point. Is water wet? Curious on your hot take on that.
I guess it wasn't obvious, but I never meant to take a stand on any aspect of the Predator revenue outside of Box Office. Neither of us knows if, over three decades, the merch has netted a couple of million bucks for the studio or even tens or hundreds of millions. So there's not much point in discussing it as a revenue stream without data. However, I will grant you that the merch potential is probably a big reason why they keep trying with the movies. But the movies still continuously miss the mark with the general audience. I was curious if you were going to apologize for calling me delusional after having box office explained to you, or were you just going to double down and continue being needlessly aggressive?
Why would I apologize your box office point was pointless and already disproven. You’re trying to argue something isn’t a franchise while looking at 30 years of merch and 6 movies, in a thread about you guessed it another Predator movie while trying to say this isn’t happening. Remember when you said they lost more money on the Predator franchise than they made? Please keep going this is hilarious.
If you guys watch Bob's Burgers, the "Bread-ator" made an appearance in tonight's Thanksgiving episode. I was just reading this thread earlier today and thought it was an amusing coincidence when it came up in the episode.
If there's a Predator story that I think is worth adapting, is the Bad Blood Predators. Either a solo Bad Blood to differentiate it from the previous honorable Predators of the past, or a story where the regular Predator is hunting a Bad Blood across the galaxies.
I said their attempts at sequels have probably cost them more than they've made, not the whole franchise. That's because Predator 2 and The Predator were big enough bombs that they may have eaten up the very meager profit from the other movies. Here, look, I did the math for you. Again, this is an educated guess. I'm not saying it's a certainty that the sequels have lost more money than they made. But it's a very real possibility.
I actually hope for Disney to keep the rights, but that's just my opinion. Also, the upcoming Predator film is supposed to begin filming this June. 'Predator' Screenwriters Suing Disney to Recapture Rights
Yeah, I'm gonna say that I think it'd be great if more creators could hold onto their works rather than see them get drained for all that their worth by corporate milking of the franchise.
I don't think the creators will win. I expect Disney to pay them off for the rights and close the case. Disney are waaay more powerful than they are.
With all the enemies Disney has created over the years especially in recent times along with how it's gradually losing more money I wouldn't be surprised if they have to eventually start selling off some IPs in general. Not just Predator.
Who even cares about Predator anymore? They came out of the gate with one of the best movies ever, but everything since then has been a step down. And sometimes a whole flight of stairs down. It might do well in other mediums, but as far as movies go, Predator has a horrible track record.

I’m still shocked that none of the Alien or Predator movies have genuinely tried to adapt some of the comics that Dark Horse has put out over the years (AVP was somewhat of a title slap considering it was set in present day). There’s some great stories out there that only die hard Alien and Predator fans know about. They’ve been sitting on a gold mine for at least two decades, and they just have not dug into at all.
New Predator Movie Reportedly Casts Legion Star Amber Midthunder The character of Kee has been described in prior reports as a woman who goes against gender norms to become a warrior. The story also involves Kee’s brother Taabe, who is being groomed as the leader of the tribe. The movie takes place long before Europeans have arrived in North America. The film is set to go before cameras soon in Calgary, Alberta.
