It's a "soft" reboot... it's not an actual prequel, but kinda is as it showed how they got here (especially BB)... more an alternative than either prequel or reboot, as it keeps some details from the original Bay movies, but resets a bunch of things.

I think a "reset" is a better word than reboot.

The last article I just read about the upcoming movie and new director (last week I think) stated this very thing.

Honestly, "refresh" is a better word, as Thew puts it.

I really don’t see how either of those aren’t Synonymous with reboot in this context

But I also don’t really understand the concept of a soft reboot either

The way I see it if somethings are the same and somethings of been changed it’s just a reboot......But with a few familiar elements

Idk if this is unpopular, but IDW's later comics went too fanfic-y with a splice of edge.
Everyone got in easily shippable relationships, and they went for the whole "religion is a lie" angle which might be alienating to some audiences. Don't even get me started on Unicron.

I'm a Transformers fan, so I'm pretty accustomed to inconsistencies. Besides, I'm sure there were plenty of insider statements suggesting TLK was "well-written entertainment", so I don't usually take such things as gospel.

But ok, call it a reboot, or a soft reboot, or a refresh, whatever. I don't honestly care enough to worry about the label. I thought Bumblebee was okay and suggested decent potential in possible sequels, but I'm completely cool with whatever they put out that effectively buries the Bayverse films. As long as the live-action films are focused on solid storytelling and character development rather than a bunch of vapid mechanical horror puppets beating the shit out of each other, I'm game.

I haven't read much of IDW yet (just pieces here and there), but I'm interested-- the cost of collecting all of the volumes is my biggest hurdle. Can you elaborate on your statements without dropping huge spoilers?

I hate g1 scourge’s face. I’m not totally against beards in transformers but it doesn’t work for him. Imo he should have something like dreamwave the fallen’s face plate CBCFE05A-DE37-40E4-9235-AA1F793141F9.jpeg

I mean someone made this. It's supposed to be a Sweep but it works. Replaced the beard with a faceplate.

Technically they didn't replace the facial hair, but the face itself, so it's a faceplate with facial hair.

    And I love it.

During development, it was very specifically referred to as a "prequel". Only after it was favorably received was it retroactively deemed a "reboot". They were hedging their bets. If it flopped, they were prepared to stick with the prequel line, and lump it in with the Bayverse garbage that preceded it. The "prequel" tag was just a place to hang blame. Success, though, opened up the option to call it a "reboot", paving the way for a new line of sequels.

But that wouldn't explain the fact that Prime is already on earth at the end of Bumblebee.

    Correct...mostly
They did not announce it was a reboot/refresh/repaint/retool/restart until after its reception came in overwhelmingly more positive than TLK. There were conscious decisions made to make its continuity ambiguous while it was being filmed though, such as axing Megatron and Hot Rod. So really as far as intent goes, it was a “safe investment.”

Hey, I didn't write the script... I'm just saying the whole "reboot" thing came after the fact. After the jacked-up continuum in TLK, who knows who was on Earth and when? I mean, nothing in Bayverse made much sense to me anyway, and what I did understand I generally didn't like.

Honestly, TF is so full of retcons, alternate universes, and whatnot, I don't try to keep it straight these days. I just hope each time when they come out with something new, it's worth watching.

This is true. Much like if I was preparing for a contest that I thought I could legitimately lose, I might hint that the judges or scoring system were unreliable. You know, just to save face. That way, if I fail, I can offset some of the blame. But if I win, well, then I can pretend that all was in order and I succeeded in my own right. Bumblebee was largely a win (especially compared to its predecessors), so it was characterized as a successful reboot rather than a prequel.

Bumblebee’s got the dumb binkie face and reformats into the 70s Camaro at the end of the film. Where does it say that Prime came to Earth for the first time in ‘07? Bumblebee is definitely a prequel to the Bay films, the first one in particular. Future films could overwrite that connection, but that is absolutely where it stands now.

I wish that whoever did the animation for the Transformers Devastation video game had been hired to do so in WFC Siege.
