I saw a guy on Facebook paint it up like Skull Leader's VF-1S. Looked amazing.

    ^^^Sooooooooooooooooooooo much better.

Seriously, how hard would it have been to mold it in straight gray instead of the beige-y w/diarrhea-splatter mess of a color scheme that was released instead?

Honestly not that hard. I think it actually would’ve been cheaper to mold it in cool grey, apply a subtle ink wash and skip the mud pattern.

Is there any chance a dye would make the plastic look less transparent and shitty? I could do a dye job but I have no interest in painting the entire thing.

    Yeah, that's an insane improvement.

There has to be a reason that Hasbro went with the plastic they did, right? Since it almost objectively looks bad.

This really shows how good the mold itself actually looks. You can't even tell it is that detailed with the terrible plastic color/paint hasbro put on it

Probably but whomever signed off on it, be it Paramount, Hasbro or Northrop Grumman, got it wrong. Could it be Hasbro? Maybe, but then again, their 2011 GI Joe Skystriker was in a closer grey to the actual Tomcat from Top Gun, compared to this. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone from Paramount saw a screen grab from the beginning of the movie where the color was warm for the most part.

When it comes to deco, best references are either the real aircraft under natural lighting or model kit decal instruction sheets which usually list the correct colors.

I think Maverick’s Tomcat in the movie was a mix of this TPS:
Grumman F-14 Tomcat Tactical Camouflage Color Profile and Paint Guide

    and this Gray Ghost:
Grumman F-14 Tomcat Ghost Gray Camouflage Color Profile and Paint Guide

I could be wrong but I think @David Hingtgen might know

Maverick's plane actually doesn't have that much good footage of it, ironically. Ice Man's is much better-archived.

Short version: the planes used in the movie were at their worst, after an
extra-long deployment during the transition from overall gull grey to low-vis, at a base known to have experimental camo schemes. They could originally have been painted in almost anything that an F-14 ever wore, (even 35164 blue) and touched up and repainted with almost random colors.

I wouldn't dare to guess the actual colors or scheme on any plane in the movie.

I do know one thing though----"brown hippo-poo splatters" wasn't part of the look.

I wonder if this mold will ever make its way to general retail.

Seems a bit of a waste to have entirely dedicated tooling just for this exclusive (as opposed to remolds, like the Delorean and the Ghostbusters car).
