This. I would even like it completely black like on the pretender version. It might not be accurate, but looks better.
I think there are laws and statutes that are preventing us from getting a truly toon deco Grimlock with yellow chest and no smokey black piece. It's the only explanation why after 35 years we still haven't had a single official transforming G1 Grimlock in toon deco, even in a line that's apparently meant to be homaging the 86 movie (though clearly it's still WFC).
I'm super excited for Jazz, Grimlock and Hot Rod. Poor Grimmy is missing his front teeth, and while it's not a dealbreaker since overall he gets much more right than wrong, it's still a head-scratcher. It doesn't look too bad unless viewed directly from the front. "Me Grimlock, need dentures!" Still stoked. Can't wait to get Grimlock and all the rest of his Dinobots!! And yeah. We can agree to disagree without calling/implying that anyone is stupid/ignorant or whatever. Point is we've got great toys to look forward to in the midst of a global crisis. I'd say we're doing pretty damned well.
Slag is also coming in 2021. Sludge, Swoop and Snarl aren't confirmed/rumored yet, but logically wouldn't all be coming in the same year as that would be too many Leaders than Hasbro's willing to dish out in that short of a time span.
Maybe they're saving that for the MP V2? I hope? Personally I want the full toon matte pale yellow with no metal flake in it at all. But this one is a nice compromise and I'm still happy with it. I'm thinking the dark translucent chest piece may be a bit lighter in hand. Isn't FT Grinder that dark? I have to check my copy. I don't think it's that big a deal. Overall he looks fantastic and is making me want an MP V2 even more. I sold my MP-08 a long time ago. I never liked how short it was compared to MP-10 and I really didn't like the light up gun/sword and tail gimmicks. This one is still not tall enough to display with MPs but it looks really good.
I'm just glad they recognized the flat yellow wasn't working and moved to a more metallic yellow. The smokey plastic isn't the best but the changes seem to be for the better IMO. Unless they could do a very glossy shiny yellow. Grimlock needs some *shine* to him

Yes, Grimlock was not intended to accurate alongside Hot Rod and the other SS86 figures, and that chest isn't just some weird choice.
The only thing wrong with it is the smoky chestplate. Everything else is very nice and cartoon accurate.
I thought one of our insiders had said "the plan currently was for 4 of the dinobots" leading most to assume Snarl will be the odd man out since he's barely featured in the movie.
The thing is, the black is not a small detail. It's the defining feature on the largest part of his body. It's right there. No version of Grimlock has ever had that large of a contrast between his gold and his smoky plastic. It's...wildly wrong and super prominent. But like I said, it's still the best version of the character. Help us, upgrade-kit-wan-kenobi. You're our only hope.
That leaker merely said one dinobot wouldn't be redone, not only 4 would be done. Thanks to POTP there are technically 6 Hasbro recognized "G1" dinobots so the one not getting done is most likely Slash
