I did the same thing. In fact, ‘89 was when I started collecting. At that point, I was still able to find Darkseid, the Kalibak Boulder Bomber, and Delta Probe One all still in Toys R Us, in the clearance isle. I grew up around Dayton, Ohio, and there was a lot of Super Powers items still to be found there in the late 80s and early 90s because the Kenner plant was located in Cincinnati. I remember there was one guy who’s son was a Kenner employee, that had a booth at a flea market within driving distance from where we lived, and he still had a lot of the more common first series figures for sale on cards, for just a few bucks. Lots of Jokers, Hawkmen, and Green Lanterns. And he had a ton of the Flash figures in Kenner baggies. I was able to find a lot of good stuff from that guy!
yeah, the 89 Batman film pretty much set me on my current path of action figures... got rid of all my old Star Wars and Megos and the whatnot before, but when that Batman line hit, and the following Marvel and DCs from Toybiz, and then Playmates Turtles and Trek and Star Wars returning...haven't looked back since...(and that's ignoring the big elephant, namely Transformers, that I always had a collection going)
Interesting, some thoughts: Nightwing looks terrible, that face is just ******ed. I'll stick with my Twopack one, but I get it, you've gotta repaint your figures to make the cash, I get it. Bizzaro is his Rebirth version, it looks a bit off, but is also INCREDIBLE tempting. I really hope we can get this New Superman mold as Rebirth Superman, I will replace my #1000 Superman in a heartbeat. Batman is a neat variation, but I'll stick with the Target exclusive one. I like the mask and guns better but the sword is cool. It really sucks that I don't care for John Stewart cause that figure looks amazing! I really like that Green Lantern mold, and I can't wait to see the other lanterns like Hal and my personal favorite, Guy. I wonder if this means a Sinestro too?
Hah That Jokerized Dick is harrrrrrible. Im starting to be less than impressed, every release. Ill buy that Stewart but, he's boring as fuck, outside of the cartoon. Easy Hal from that, though.
I was hoping for Hal also since the there was already a DCAU John (at least this ones look better in my opinion). Jessica also because I need her to fill out my human Lantern Corps reps. Now we’ll probably have to cycle through another 8 Batman variants before coming back to GL.
I think it beats out the Arkham Batman for worst looking face (if you got the face paint errors) Ehh, I think its an equilibrium, every time I see a stunner like Redhood or Flashpoint Batman, we also get to see a Jokerized Nightwing. I would unironically buy this if Todd did it: I had it as a kid and loved it.
So did Todd give up the whole batmobile BAF experiment? I remember in that initial interview on DC Universe's talk show that he said he was going to try it, he had all these batmobiles lined up, but if people told him to screw off he would go back to regular BAFs, which is what it seems like he's done.
yah it was huge and I understand why kids didn't want him when they could have Superman, Batman or any number of other heroes (and more famous villains)...it was a pretty risky thing as the Fourth World characters were not exactly well known to the general public and even with the Super Powers show, they probably could have sold more Batgirls or Supergirls than Orions or Steppenwolfs...
They were only in three parts, which was intentional on his part because he thought it was lame to force people to buy a whole wave of six or seven to build a figure. I actually thought that interview was pretty good. I do think the weird way they had time-bound exclusives for some of the figures made the initial lineup odd to collect. I still only have 2/3 of that batmobile because I never got a Nightwing.
Ooooo, seeing the old Super Powers figures reminds me that I need to find my original Mego Pocket Super Heroes Batman.
I'm not a huge fan of the design (those bat ears sticking out of her hair and then the way that different artists emphasize her chest kind of weirds me out coming shortly after the Burnside design) but I seem to collect Batgirls and it's a well done figure. The Nightwing is the one that I couldn't justify since it's out of scale with the rest of my figures and the design is almost the same. If I can ever track down the two pack I'll probably get that one for the Red Hood so it pushes Nightwing even further down. Were those three figures with the batmobile pieces intentionally like 5 bucks extra for the pieces, or because they were exclusives at first?
