    Sup,
I’m new to the third party game and don’t know what to get. I have some transformers figures that are Hasbro figures. I was thinking about getting generation toys gravity builder and Make Toys Quantron. Are these good picks to start a collection. I would get more well known characters like optimu or other guys but I want some combiners. Thank you.

There’s another section of this board that deals with 3rd party releases. That is the best place to get opinions on 3rd party figures.
Here’s the link to that section:

Current personal faves (of a collection I started within the last year, so this could change)

    Fanstoys Roadking (masterpiece-style Motormaster)
Maketoys Striker Manus (original design of Optimus)
Maketoys Rioter Despotron (same of above for Megatron)
Transformission Havoc (Menasor styled after the IDW comics)
Big Fire Bird Nicee (very stylized Arcee)
Fans Hobby Power. Baser (big, beefy interpretation of Powermaster Optimus)

I'm going to level with ya my friend,

Nobody can or should tell you what you want to, need to, or should buy. The toys themselves are what are going to sell you on them. Reviews give you ideas on what to buy as well.

However, other people telling a person what to buy means that the person buying things isn't sure enough in the security of his/herself's own choices.

As a collector myself, It's not a good thing to allow others to dictate your choices on what to buy for a collection that you yourself are going to enjoy. Buy what you want. Regret Nothing. Collect for yourself, don't collect to please others. ;)

    Thanks.
With this info I’ll just get whatever seems cool to me and not the new and popular figures.

Sounds like you like Combiners and are generally unsatisfied with the offerings of Hasbro. This is what leads most of us to 3rd party collecting.

There are no general rules. Collect what suits your display or collecting needs, mix and match the best outcome that's tailored around your preferences.

Above all, while it is not a reasonable expectation that you read 435 pages of a specific thread just to understand the ups and downs of a particular figure, you should at minimum do your research by at least watching several YouTube video reviews of whatever you are thinking of buying, to give you an informed perspective.

    Have fun!

A very important first question to ask is what's your collection focus? Is t movie, Masterpiece, legends (big in 3rd party and non-existant in regular TF's) or classics/war for cybertron?

After that, look at pictures what exist and ask in the relevant threads.

Also, look at video reviews on YouTube. Don't limit yourself to just one reviewer, but check out several because they prefer different things and you get a better insight.

Well if you want a good combiner it depends on how you feel about partsforming. There are combiners like assaultus that use no partsforming whatsoever, hands and feet included. There are those that will use extreme partsformimg like zeta and x transbots that have a lot of partsforning like 50 percent of the combiner. The return is that its 21 inches tall and much cheaper than a all in one. The best optimus on the market would arguably be mmc optimus in terms of articulation. But he's not out yet. If you like the ut trilogy, fanshobby is making an energon and armada optimus, and made a power master one.

Since you're name is dino creator im gonna guess you like dinos? If so, you may want to prep yourself. Cangtoys plans to make a dinobot combiner a few years from now. And if their predaking so far is anything to goby it'll be beautiful. And planet x made a really good foc grimlock. And they're about to make a idw grimlock, as is mmc.

Fair earning, although maketoys Quattro was good, it was flawed, and I heard stories of broken connectors. Just a fair warning.

If you want a art peuce than fanstoys may be the way to go.

If you want something fun to pose, mmc and late maketoys might not be a bad idea. Fansproject is okay.

Good cheap combiners is zetas zone. Good is subjective there

If you like jp characters, tfc made road ceasar, and king posaiden. Don't touch their liokaiser though. Early tfc isn't that great. Their nuclear optimus is beautiful though

X transbots is like cheap fanstoys. They are fun, but their older stuff had plenty of qc issues. Their menasor is OK so far, but they haven't released the trailer Slash the body

@Dinocreater, I rewrote my reply because I felt it came off a little too forward and I don't want to scare you off. I'm sorry about that my friend. :D

I mean well. I just want to empower people so they are secure enough with their choices they don't regret things.

If you see something you think is awesome and would look great on your shelf or that instantly puts a huge smile on your face and your eyes light up like Christmas and makes ya feel that warm fuzziness or sense of wonder. THAT is the figure for you. Some out there like to buy the next big in things because it's hip and they want to keep up with the times or buy what all the cool kids buy, or they strive to make the same exact collection as other collectors. Many of us just buy what we like and what we enjoy, or something that we relate to in some way.

I am not sure of what kind of collector you are. But whatever kind of collector you are, don't worry too much on what others collect. So many get caught in that trap. Then, before you know it, you end up with tons of stuff you just aren't happy with. Many regrets or you end up broke as hell because of something somebody else thought was cool and recommended you pick up only to find, it's not really your thing. You know what I mean?

So by all means if you see something you think you'll enjoy and again, it makes you feel all giddy inside like an overly excited school girl or something to that effect. Get it. Get it and don't worry what any other living soul thinks. Because at the end of the day my friend. You are the one who will be staring at the collection you build and appreciating it, and Marveling at it. Nothing else matters. :thumb .

As for 3rd Party recommendations, well.... Start small, start cheap. feel it out. Tons of people out there would recommend Legends sized figures first because they tend to be cheaper but still contain tons of detail like the bigger toys out there.

If you are into female Transformers I can't recommend EX-01 NICEE enough. Supreme Quality and by far the best Female Transforming Robot on the market currently. Again, judge it for yourself. research, research, research. :thumb .

If it's combiners you're after, are you looking for a great combined mode or great individual bot mode?

    fanshobby double evil/overlord
    any gigapower dinobot.
    fansproject MADLAW/quickswitch
perfect effect BW2 megatron either the normal or cryotek version.
    unique toys challenger
    DX9 stunticons
any Ocular Max figure or MMC.
    maketoys galaxy meteor /galaxy starscream

edit: fanstoys fanboys are gonna hate this but...steer clear from their aerial bots unless you want to be stressed out about bad quality and chatting with customer support. or just be careful with their products. for some reason after quietus release, their stuff's quality went down the drain.

What an objective question to potentially subjective answers. That said, after a sea change of events, anything Weijiang. ;)  (almost, they make junky junk too, for the local market)

There’s a Perseus (a white alt deco TFC Hercules/Devastator) crazy cheap on TFSource.

Don’t get him, though . . . ‘cause I’d like to before too long . . . which unfortunately is unlikely

The Ocular Max line is one of my favorite lines and they're better priced than most other figures, their Combaticons are great both individually and combined. Also think they have the best Arcee and Springer, and their Mirage and Inferno are great too

As for other figures, Transform Element TE-01, DX9 Gewalt, Generation Toys Red Bull, and GCreation Rebel are also really good. And lastly you'll also probably get some recommendations for Fanstoys, and I can vouch for that, I have Road King, Magnum and Thomas, and they're all fantastic. Unfortunately Fanstoys is in ridiculous demand, so it'll be hard to get these unless you're willing to play ridiculously high prices for them. If they have figures you want, it wouldn't hurt to look for alternatives for those characters if you can

Also, if you're interested in the Movie universe, I cannot recommend Unique Toys Challenger and Dragoon enough, those are some of the best 3rd party figures I've seen. I also have Newage Mista, Transform Element TE-02 and DX9 La Hire and I really like them a lot. Also Toyworld Freedom Leader, which will probably gets some eyes from me, but I love this guy in robot mode too

zeta superion and bruticus are excellent choices. There's some partsforming there but it's par for the course to achieve that look. I heard toyworld devy was good but I don't know. I think a better devastator will be made at some point in the future.
