Kelly Marie Tran on being the first Southeast Asian actress to lead a Disney animated film Kelly Marie Tran is playing the title role and is the first southeast asian actress to headline an animated Disney film.
I think she herself is a good actress despite what happened with Star Wars and hopefully can deliver some stellar voice work. Looking forward to this film overall.
Fucking bullshit. What happened to Cassie Steele? Would have been nice to have a proper Filipina princess in more than a singing role.
Huh, yeah, I forgot Steele was already announced last year. For now, there doesn't seem to be a official reason given for the recasting.
Disney had a pretty good run of theatrical animated features over the past decade or so. Some very solid movies, even the ones that weren't my cup of tea. Maybe it'll be regarded as a modern golden age. Because such things don't last forever, eventually they stumble and fail. I don't get what they're trying to do here. It feels like they don't know either. Seems random and contrived. Throw things at a wall, see what will stick, apply Disney formula. Time will tell, but right now I'd say it doesn't have that Timeless Classic™ vibe. Just the impression I get. Obviously they're trying to cater to their southeast asian audience, and there's nothing wrong with that if they can make it work. Perhaps it will make more sense in that context.
Yea, I don't know what they're going for either. But, it does look like something Disney has not tried before. It does appear to be very well done, with a lot that Disney Brand creativity we've all grown to expect and love from their animated movies. It does look like it will be a great movie. I'm surprised on how well Kelly Marie Tran seems to voice act. Something that most physicals actors fail miserably at. Especially when they're being pulled in from the other shows/movies that are super popular. She seems to be doing a great job here, too. I'm definitely looking forward to this. This is exactly what I want to see more from Disney. This, while clearly grounded heavily in southeast Asian culture, does appear to be some sort of original story. Which is something Disney doesn't do often, either. Which is another thing, I want to see more from Disney. So, I will definitely watch this movie when it is released.
Honestly, this looks interesting for an initial trailer. Almost gives me some ATLA & ATLK vibes. I'll be catching this in theaters next year situation permitting.
Yea, I caught a little bit of that vibe in this trailer, too. It definitely reminded me of Last Airbender. Not in a bad way at all, either.
The trailer actually gives off some Samurai Jack vibes to me to be honest but I say that in a good way. I wouldn't be surprised that if they did take inspiration from Samurai Jack a bit the main villain if there is one is a shapeshifting demon from South Asian mythology in it.
Okay. I’ll give it a try. Needs to be better than Ralph 2 and Frozen 2 by a longshot. This was the biggest surprise of the trailer for me too. If they had just said “2021” then okay I’d buy it.
Stanning for Southeast Asian representation. Just as a fun fact, the word raya means great in Indonesian and Malay. The hat the lead girl's wearing is called a caping here and it's usually worn by rice farmers in paddy fields. But this film and the culture it captures isn't just the one of Indonesia, it's also for the cultures of Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and every other Southeast Asian country. I hope Disney did their homework and deliver on a better story than the Mulan remake.
