I'm wanting to build a Smash Bros roster with action figures, and I'm curious which ones would you recommend?

I would like to keep the number of expensive figures down to a minimum.

Here's a list of all characters I want to collect from the series that I know have figures made:

    Mario
    Donkey Kong
    Link
    Samus
    Yoshi
    Kirby
    Luigi
    Bowser
    Shiek
    Falco
    Lucina
    Meta Knight
    Snake
    Diddy Kong
    Sonic
    Lucario
    Mega man
    Ryu
    Ken
    Cloud

Figures and model kits are welcome as long as they scale relatively well with eachother.

How important is scale to you? Because for Mario, I would recommend the Bandai ones and for Solid Snake, the Figma version.

I don't need it to scale perfectly. I just want them to look good together.

The Lucina figma is getting a reprint, Sonic's got a Nendoroid, there's a plastic model kit you can build of Rockman by Kotobukiya from a few years back which might not scale so well but is a nice little figure otherwise.

    Figma Lucina
    Figma Corrin (Female)
    Figma Joker
    SH Figuarts Princess Zelda
    SH Figuarts Link
    SH Figuarts Bowser
    World of Nintendo Diddy Kong
    Figma Samus
    Figma Zero Suit Samus
    Nendoroid Sonic the Hedgehog
World of Nintendo or SH Figuarts Mario
World of Nintendo or SH Figuarts Luigi
    World of Nintendo Bowser Jr
    World of Nintendo Pirahana Plant
    SH Figuarts Ryu
    SH Figuarts Ken
    World of Nintendo Toon Link

I personally use World of Nintendo for Mario, Luigi, Link, Toon Link, & Diddy Kong since I collect other lines so I can’t go full import. Though I do use Figma for Lucina & Corrin as I’m a huge fan of Fire Emblem and will buy any more FE Figmas they make like the upcoming Edelgard. I’m not to familiar with Persona so I’m not putting a lot of money in for Joker so I use the Funko Pop. I also got the Figma Zero Suit Samus on sale and the Nendoroid Sonic.

I would love to see figures made of Female Byleth, Rosalina, & Pauletina.

But I’m primarily focused on tracking down any Amiibos I can at a good price.

One of the Figma Links. There are versions from Twilight Princess, A Link Between Worlds and Skyward Sword. Take your pick...but I prefer A Link Between Worlds. It is the only Link figure I feel I will ever need. He's fun. Not real cheap, though...

Unfortunately a lot of these just are expensive at this point... Either by nature of really only having good representation via import figures or just by age. Best (IMO) choice for Donkey Kong, for example, is World of Nintendo - I didn't get it myself years ago when seeing it all the time at Toys R Us and really regret that since I still haven't because now it kinda goes for more than it's really worth...

Others nobody's given options for yet you've asked about:

Link - Think poster above probably meant Figma for him, not Figuarts. There's 3 different versions depending on your preference - Skyward Sword, Link Between Worlds, and Twilight Princess
Yoshi - SH Figuarts or World of Nintendo
Kirby - Nendoroid (and it is excellent)
    Meta Knight - Nendoroid
Lucario - SH Figuarts or Variable Action Heroes (the VAH is going to be a bit smaller and is based on Pokken Tournament, but it'll do the job... both go for insane amounts now though)
Bowser - I have the SHF for this, but I'd actually say consider the World of Nintendo one too. It's surprisingly more articulated.
    Shiek - World of Nintendo
    Falco - World of Nintendo
Mega Man - There are so many options here. I have the D-Arts, but there's also a model from Kotobukiya that looks really good.
Cloud - I don't think there's a good option of his Smash outfit that will scale well. Play Arts Kai is the only one that comes to mind, but those are considerably bigger than the rest of the figure lines for these guys.

Since we’re on the subject of figure representation... does anyone know if this Bowser in the three pack is in scale with World of Nintendo’s 4” line?

Thanks! That just solves what I’ll do for a Bowser figure.

If you want Inklings in your Smash display there are 2 options, the World of Nintendo ones or the more expensive Figma ones. I have the Figma Inklings and really enjoy them, though if you’re on a budget the World of Nintendo ones are cheaper.

Also pictured here with Figuarts Mario, Sentinel 4-Inch Nel Mega Man, World of Nintendo Toon Link and some Pokémon figures I found at Wal-Mart.

I think the Comic Maker Steve by Mattel will. I already had an older Jazwares Creeper I picked up on a whim, so got a Steve after that announcement (...and then some) just to match that, but he's definitely too small. Mattel also has some action feature based Steves, but they're a bit tall from pictures I've seen.

And now that you've got me thinking of it all, I'm just gonna post my whole roster lol.

    • Mario - SHF
    • Link - Figma (I have all 3)
    • Samus - Figma (You have 2 options here, I have the Other M one since it matches Smash, but the newer Prime 3 looks good too.)
    • Yoshi - SHF
    • Kirby - Nendoroid
    • Fox - World of Nintendo
    • Pikachu - SHF (WAY too big. There's a literal ton of smaller ones to pick from though lol.)
    • Luigi - SHF
    • Jigglypuff - Wicked Cool Toys
    • Peach - World of Nintendo
    • Bowser - SHF
    • Zelda - Figma (Twilight Princess is the only one available for that line)
    • Falco - World of Nintendo
    • Lucina - Figma
    • Mewtwo - D-Arts
    • Meta Knight - Nendoroid
    • Pit - Figma
    • Dark Pit - Figma (well, it's on pre-order, but still)
    • Zero Suit Samus - Figma
    • Wario - World of Nintendo
    • Snake - Figma
    • Pokemon Trainer - Figma
      • Charizard - D-Arts
      • I have Nendoroids & Figmas that include Squirtle and Ivysaur too, so guess I could count them... But don't have dedicated larger figures, which I'd like, especially for Ivysuar
    • Diddy Kong - World of Nintendo
    • Sonic - Nendoroid
    • Lucario - SHF
    • Mega Man - D-Arts
    • Greninja - Takara Tomy
    • Bowser Jr. - World of Nintendo
      • Iggy - World of Nintendo
      • Ludwig - World of Nintendo
    • Ken - SHF
    • Ryu - SHF
    • Corrin - Figma
    • Inkling - Figma (have both DXes of the girl and boy sets)
    • Isabelle - Nendoroid (both winter and summer outfits)
    • Incineroar - Takara Tomy
    • Piranha Plant - World of Nintendo
    • Joker - Figma
    • Hero - Bring Arts (just the DQ11 one)
    • Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman - Jazwares

Lots of holes to fill still... But still a lot more than I realized, writing it all out now lol.

Edit: And a wants list if I were to fill those holes, because why the heck not at this point. Some of this will be repeating advice from above...

    • Donkey Kong - World of Nintendo
    • Sheik - World of Nintendo (Only haven't because she'd be a good bit smaller than I'd like)
    • Pichu - Takara Tomy (I guess? Probably lots of options here too. Don't think Wicked Cool/Jazwares has done one yet...)
    • Ivysaur - Takara Tomy
    • Squirtle - Tomy or a WCT
    • Olimar - World of Nintendo
    • Toon Link - Nendoroid (WoN has a good option here too. Oh and that reminds me - for normal Link, WoN has also done a bunch, and notably is the only company to do a BotW one in smaller scale.)
    • Villager - World of Nintendo (Doesn't look great, doesn't match Smash look, but is the only option)
    • Pac-Man - I have no idea, but am sure that I could find something good enough
    • Simon - NECA
    • Terry - D-Arts

Scale-wise, the old Bandai Rockman kits(the ones made from ABS plastic..they were basically body frames with armor that could be removed/swapped) from the late 90’s might fit in with the Jakks Nintendo figures.

I am eying either the figuarts Pac Man, or the Entry Grade Pac Man, to best compliment the Nendoroid Kirby. I know that the Figuarts figure has some good articulation and a pretty cheap price point. But if the Entry Grade kit is better to scale with Nendo Kirby, I would rather just get that instead.
