Oops. I keep forgetting Skylinx is Commander Class.
It's early. Coffee hasn't hit yet.

Some might, but I know some high school students that make more money than me working in the restaurant industry.

It's an instructive faux pas, though. Sky Lynx is such a complete outlier that it's hard to imagine what sort of precedents he actually sets for the price point. Saying that, (and as you've noted) Sky Lynx being a 'bot of two halves' may well point to how Hasbro might feasibly release Rodimus at the price point whilst keeping him in scale.

Man, I forgot how much that unpainted part of Hoodlum annoys me. I'll eventually to get around to painting that part of the chest behind the neck.

Overall, both MP-28 and Hoodlum are disappointments. I remember an old thread where some company was planning on KOing MP-28 and making a lot of modifications to it. It' looked promising.

I think this guy looks great in both modes, but clearly has a better robot mode (alt mode looks a little gappy, but it doesn't bother me tbh). Definitely the best official Hot Rod toy ever. Does anyone know if the exhaust pipes on the forearms can rotate to give it a longer look?

I think Kremzeek reviews showed it but I’m not sure. I’d have to watch the review again.

Recent masterpieces also slavishly try to match the animation model, and haven't been "masterpiece" in years...

I think that the old classics Rodimus is a more interesting toy in some ways because they took the essence of the character and modernized it. Its main problems are that the head and hands are too small by current standards, but it's certainly a better transformation than what the SS seems to be.

It all depends on what your opinion of a Masterpiece is.

Thing is, everybody has different ideas, but animation accuracy is a measurable quality. It either looks like the cartoon, or it doesn't. To some fans, if not the majority, the G1 animation is what the characters look like.

It's main problems are that its engineering felt five years old even when it was new. It has an incredibly "wasteful" transformation where the car compacts into a robot, rather than expanding. TFA Rodimus was only three years later and was twice the size in robot mode yet significantly smaller in alt mode. As a result it's clunky, has a massive backpack, dogshit articulation, and a really unappealing sculpt. It looks dumpy and lame, and not at all the lithe, youthful character Hot Rod is.

Until this Hod Rod, the best Hod Rod(imus) figure was the Animated Deluxe. Not that I am complaining, but I just find that interesting.

I disagree, SS has almost no backpack.
puts the masterpiece to shame. Also single piece Crotch Flap is silly...

Why are you bringing up MP vs SS? I'm not even talking about that. I said that I didn't like recent MPs, and that I liked some aspects of the old classics Rodimus better.

So, is this what the golden age of Transformers collecting looks like atm? Because between this and leaderclass grimlock I haven't been this excited about mainline releases in years.

That’s in part due to being part of a line that was meant to be a filler line between Cybertron and the 1st live action movie(which had an initial premiere date planned earlier than summer 2007). Classics wasn’t supposed to be G1 with full articulation, the modernized design was seemingly meant to fit in, in a way with the Cybertron line. That somewhat extended to the Universe/Classics 2.0 line in 2008. Some fans definitely prefer the modernized route.

However, for fans that always wanted a fully articulated mainline(not MP) Hot Rod based on G1, they’re finally getting their wish with the new SS86 voyager Hot Rod. Given the price, it ought to be worth the wait. I’m probably getting it, the vintage G1 toy hasn’t aged well to me even back in the day and this SS86 one is far more appealing to me.

I don't like faux parts at all, but there's no denying how much nicer that slim backpack looks compared to the MP.

Sadly, the studio series car mode is really bad. It's stumpy and looks almost the same as the Titans Retun version.

Having said all that, as a big fan of Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime, I just might go ahead and pick this up cause it looks like it might be a fun toy to mess around with and the robot mode indeed looks great. (Stupid fake chest.)

I haven't bought a TF in two or three years, so maybe it's time to dip my toes back in the water.

There's no point discussing faux parts for studio series, as said before it needs to do that to achieve the look. Cartoon accuracy is mandatory for studio series. I don't even know how this is point of discussion.
