I laughed way too much at this, especially the random endoskeletons.

As for the show, i really enjoyed it. Seems disco has found it's fun factor, although i agree it got a little much the sheer number of vapourisations. But I'm ok with it. I'm in for this ride if they can keep this momentum. Also nice that they fixed that little plot hole from the end of s2 in regards to the 7th signal.

I think the rumor now is either the original contract with Netfix or Moonves was for five years.

Okay, Michael getting high as a kite was the most amusing part of the episode.

So, Discovery season 3 has started.

Let's start positive. The series finally has a purpose, a reason for being (other than let's make Star Trek because Star Trek sells). TOS was the introduction, DS9 was going to be exploring the long term stay, VGR was intended to be about the troubles of a stranded ship plagued by a crew who didn't trust each other & ENT about how it all started. Both TNG and STD lacked a pure goal. In both cases, of course in part because of the absence of ST for such a long time, but where TNG went forward and explored a new era and more about the Federation and the universe itself (TOS was pretty much just the Enterprise and unknown planets), Discovery in season 1 and 2 went to an era that was already well established and as a result the show didn't add to the universe, but detracted from it: it didn't fit with the era on a visual level, tonally, the technical development and even events.

But now STD has a purpose. Now it adds to the story of Star Trek. We're in a completely new era where the unthinkable (at least to them) has happened: the Federation has collapsed. I do have a big problem with the explanation: Dilithium crystal, a proven element of warp drive that had been in use without any issue or anything for almost a thousand years, starting exploding everywhere. Sure.... I do hope that we get some explanation for it (and one that makes sense). That nitpick aside, it is a brave new world and with Discovery we're going to discover it. There are some remnants of the Federation, some people who still cling to what it meant, new alliances and changed worlds. Like with TNG/DS9/VGR/ENT before, for the STD proper you best skip season 1 and 2 and start with season 3 to learn what the series really is about.

Sadly we do have a season 1 and 2 and therein lies my big problem with this first episde. In season 1 & 2 Michael Burnham was shoved down our throats so violently and so consistently, that I start choking on cue when she's on screen (Pavlov would be proud). And she's on screen a lot, because outside of a new character, it's Michael Burnham in every scene and like with season 1 and 2, if she's not in the shot, people talk about her or she has influenced what happens. So I'm hoping the other crew and ship is quickly found, just to have some more diversity. (Although, it likely still will be all about her.)

Still, I'm hopeful, simply because finally this series has a purpose. I want to see where it takes me, I want to learn about this new era in Star Trek history. And I so wish this had been the first episode of the entire series. What a start that would've been.

I just watched the premiere. I did enjoy it. I can understand how people would be upset about the federation being gone. I didn’t like the idea at first, but I’ve accepted that’s the route they are taking. I can also see people comparing this to andromeda. It definitely has that element. Still it was an enjoyable story to start off with, and I do want to know where the story goes.

You know I just had an odd thought. The universe seems in line with the mirror universe now. What if they revisit the mirror universe, and it’s gotten more like what the main universe usually is. Or would it be that much worse?

TNG had a pure goal. To tell actual Star Trek stories and explore themes both forward-looking and ethical in a Star Trek manner. Your descriptions of the various series only look at surface plot and have nothing to do with what Star Trek was created to be about.

Not sure you understood what I meant. I don't mean those short description is all there was to the shows or that you can define them with it. It's where they started from, how the creators wanted to make the new show different from what had come before, and how they would thus add to the mythos.

When they made DS9, VGR and ENT they had a very well defined goal: this series will be about this part of the universe and not just be another Star Trek serie: there already was a TOS and TNG, thus it had to be different. With DS9 that was very much about it being on a station and dealing with long-term effects (unlike TNG where the Enterprise moved on after the events), with VGR that was dealing with a stranded ship and a crew that didn't get along (unlike TNG where everybody did), and with ENT about how it all started. And from that point they expanded on this and enrichted it, making them the shows that we love (or accept).

To my knowledge, TNG didn't have that. They didn't sat down prior to creating the show and said: TNG is going to be different from TOS because now we will explore this part of the universe. There are definitely differences with TOS in season 1 and 2, but in many ways early TNG is similar to TOS in finding a new planet and dealing with it. Later, thanks to other writers and especially Michael Piller, it definitely became different. It started to explore ethical context in a ST universe and telling forward looking stories, but when they started the goal was to make a ST series again without a clear intent how this would be different from TOS. (It's definitely also not touched upon in the TNG Compagnion, where the motivation for TNG is described as bringing ST back to television.)

Well that is mostly because it didn't have to be. TNG came some 25 years after TOS and they were free to do the same thing all over again because the last time was so long ago. Same way how so many people, even Mr Plinkett, didn't mind that Force awakens did the same thing as New Hope because the two were so far apart in time.
Even so TNG did not just repeat TOS and while Data was easily the new equivalent of Spock he was a very different character, for example.

Curious if they will stay in the future for the 4th season too. I frankly hope they do, as they won't step on anymore fanboy toes this way... only stuff we know of from this far in the future was Archer's time-travelling buddy and let's face it, even during Enterprise that future has been rewritten multiple times due to his choices.
Would be hilarious though if they gotten evil future Archer as the villain for the next season, as Enterprise apparently intended the mystery man behind the Suliban to be Archer from the future! :D

I don't think anyone considers Lower Decks canon. I mean, if it was canon, I would understand why the Federation collapsed... :D

I'm glad they never revealled that about Future Guy in the show. It makes no sense for it to be Archer. Personally, I like to believe he was a Romulan, although I know Star Trek Online revealed him to be a Krenim operative from the Temporal Wars. Which was actually mentioned in this Disco episode.... did they just accidentally canonise star trek online?

They've even gone past Daniels and the Relativity, so it's literally all best are off for what happens here. And I'm glad for that.

The Borg use Transwarp Drive. Quantum Slipstream is similar to Transwarp in principle, but it's a different technology Voyager picked up from their encounter with an alien named Arturis, after his race had recently been assimilated by the Borg.

I agree. Future Guy being Archer would have been a dumb idea. I really like the idea of him being a Romulan though.

As I recall, Daniels said Future Guy was from an earlier century compared to him being from the 31st century. Future Guy was from an era when they could only project themselves into the past, before the technology to time travel was developed.

No reason not to consider it canon IMHO. Not everything in Starfleet has to be as neat and tidy as is on board the important starships.

That said, Lower Decks was surprisingly good. Best new Trek out of the bunch. And that's coming from a non-hater of DIS.

Although I'm a dirty Star Trek: Enterprise lover too, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Future Guy wasn't meant to be Archer. It's just some idea Braga expressed recently.

However, when the series was made they had no idea. If it was Always intended to be Archer then they could've used Bakula or instructed the stand in to act/talk like him. Neither was the case. The simple truth is, they had no plan. No idea. Just toss this mystery bad guy in and should we ever reveal who this is...then we'll have to figure it out. Berman and Braga have even admitted that they had no plan for the identity of FG (source), although they later said that if it had been revealed on show then it likely was going to be a Romulan (source).

As for Braga's recent claim that he wanted it to be a future version of Archer...it contradicts earlier statements and more importantly, he wasn't in charge. Berman was, and he clearly did not agree with this idea (or else they would've taken steps in that direction). And later Manny Coto became showrunner and he nixed it completely. (It also had to be approved by Paramount and they would very likely not allow the lead character of the series to be revealed as the bad guy.)

Thus Future Guy is not a future version of Archer, was never intended to be so, and if Enterprise would've gotten the seven seasons it deserved to have, then FG would never be revealed to be Archer.

Of course, now with Kurtzman running the show they might very well do it. It's not that any of these writers really have shown any understanding of the material and more just picking something to use. However, STD stated that time travel technology was destroyed after the TCW and the TCW took place when the Federation still existed/was strong.

The only thing I can say is that I remember hearing “so called reliable” reports that future guy might be Archer back when the show was still airing ......So maybe it’s something he was thinking for a while
