I think most people these days are softening up on the gameplay and nuts and bolts of the game, but it’s probably fair to say that their interpretation of Samus and her actress’ performance are still rather unpopular. But that’s observational only, I’ve got a busy enough life as it is without polling people on games from......shit, I want to say ten years ago. Maybe more.

Oh and here’s mine; CD Project Red do not walk on water and whatever new start up Mike Moreheim has cobbled together is unlikely to bring about gaming second coming of Jesus.

Reload times are generally way too fast.

Mech games should be of one of two genres: Macross and anime missiles, all the time; Battletech tank mechs, stomp stomp stomp

At first I was going to put this in the Favorite Rockstar Game thread, but I thought it might come across as really jerky, so I moved it here....

Of the Rockstar games I’ve played, I don’t like ANY of them. I’ve posted in this thread before about my experience with their games, but in a nutshell:
Received Vice City as a birthday present, played it for maybe a week but was so bored I never played it again.
Rented Red Dead Redemption, played it once, and returned it. So f***ing boring.

I’ve actually never played games like Lemmings, Uniracers, Bully, Manhunt, or LA Noire, but honestly, none of them have any appeal for me. Yes, I’m aware I’m an outlier, but hey, that’s what this thread is for ;)

The game mechanic itself gets quite old, but the sound effects of detonating all of them? That never gets old.

I was never able to play the game at the time, but I have watched the movie that you can unlock after beating the game, that strings all the cutscenes together with enough gameplay to bridge the cinematic bits.

It’s dreadful. And not just Samus, though she is the biggest sticking point. But all of it. Terrible dialogue, plot points that get dropped or forgotten, lots of build up with no payoff, and just a slew of other problems.

I was only able to judge it as a movie, and it’s not a movie I’d want to bother with watching again except out of morbid curiosity to refresh my memory.

Funniest moment in the whole thing though? When one of the federation dudes is sitting at a computer typing, and the camera is shaking all over the place like this is the most intense typing you've ever seen!!

I like Smash Bros. But it's extremely overrated.

I'm a little shocked to see that the story takes two hours. But that's two hours out of a ten hour game. The gameplay is where it was actually good.

That’s what I’ve heard- that it’s a decent game saddled with a garbage story. And also- is it true that the cutscenes are unskippable? Like they were really proud of their story, but it’s kind of rubbish.

I would even say it's a very good game, looking at it by non-Metroid standards. And it's even a decent Metroid game if we remember how linear some of the other games in the series are. The story also doesn't seem nearly as bad (still bad, just less so) when it's broken up into small chunks, with hours of enjoyable gameplay in-between. The plot is mostly an excuse to learn more about the key players in the Metroid universe, which is actually fairly interesting if we're not hung up on headcanon. The sticking points for me were the annoying "investigation mode" sequences and the.
    absolute.
    cringe.
    voice acting.

I honestly don't know if the cutscenes were skippable or not. I wanted to know what was going on during my initial playthrough, and I haven't got around to playing it a second time. One of these days, I'm going to give it another go with the Japanese dub.

But my biggest issue with the reputation Other M got isn't that it deserved a bit more slack--although it did. It's that I think we missed out on a much better game because of the negative reception. The previous time Sakamoto got heavy-handed with narrative and guided linear gameplay (Fusion) he followed it up with a more traditional Metroid game using the same engine and basic game mechanics. To me, Zero Mission still stands with Super Metroid and the first Metroid Prime in the top three games of the series. Interviews with Sakamoto indicated that the purpose of Other M was to establish certain story elements before finally making Metroid 5. Other M undeniably has a lot in common with Fusion. Had it been successful, I think it would have been followed by its own equivalent to Zero Mission--possibly Metroid 5 itself. A take on Other M's gameplay that wasn't bogged down by a navel-gazing story, that allowed more exploration, and that didn't only rehash elements from previous games would have been incredible. But Other M bombed, and we didn't get that. Thanks everyone.

I haven’t played it myself, but what I heard about the cringy dialogue in Other M is that it suffered from the same problem as the script to the movie Troll 2: the director forced the actors to perform it word for word, even though it was written by someone for whom English was not a first language.

I think I saw that in a video about why the game is considered a failure.

Yeah, Sakamoto insisted on directing the voicework himself, and it was definitely a mistake.

The game deserves to be played though. Knowing in advance what to expect from it should help, too. Thankfully, it's possible to get ahold of the Japanese version, which you can play with full English subtitles for the voices and all game text in English. I haven't given it a full playthrough that way yet (just up to the first boss), but it effectively solves the voice issue.
