A little late to respond, but I would pick Shadow the Hedgehog as a counterpart to Sonic.
They will share some of the same animations, but with differences. Shadow will keep the homing attack, the up tilt, back air, neutral air, down tilt, down smash and up smash.
Shadow's side B will be the chaos spear, down B chaos blast and up B will be a teleport. His moves will revolve more around kicking and using his hover skates, creating a burning effect.
His Final Smash is Super Shadow, but unlike Sonic's, Shadow has a cinematic where he teleports nearby fighters into space, while firing the Ark's cannon at them. Referencing Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Adventure 2.

That would be dope. Especially if they give him the Dragon Warrior treatment and have a bunch of characters on one template, like his brother and Badman.

Plenty I'd be cool for. Crash, Geno (mostly to enrage the Waluigi fanbase... This game makes me so toxic lol) Shantae, Frisk, a Gen 8 pokemon rep (preferably not Rillaboom. Go, Urshifu!) Or something completely out there I'd never guess it in time that would also be awesome. There are plenty more examples but those are the top of my head.

I'm expecting another "Dante is coming" moment.

 

I would wonder if this leads to a debate of which "Mouthy Lad in Red" would make it to Smash first. That be the most amusing discussion if that ends up being the case.

 

Crash is another people think it is with crash 4 coming out. Young Impa from zelda also is one they think it may be.

Gamexplain talks about who they think it will be. (lol. Them making andre sad saying geno could just be a cuphead like mii outfit. You can hear his "crap i didn't think of that" in his voice. Lol.)

 

His name hasn't popped on my side of the rumour lists so I'm remaining skeptical over it being Travis

The only really believable leak at the moment is "It isn't a Capcom character because after their stuff leaked, we'd know who it was by now" which is.... Accurate.

Just gonna be waiting and seeing. Though a lot of folks I see are moreso dreading it being another pokemon which is.... Understandable

 

Impa? I think the main reason Zelda doesn't have many reps, is because Link, Ganondorf and Zelda been in most of the games, and they are the most recurring characters.
Travis Touchdown seems cool.
Geno, never been interested to see the edgy puppet in Smash. I rather see Mallow, cause he seems like he has more moveset potential and he's a fluffy boi.

Of course you'd be ecstatic about it. Honestly i kinda liked Minecraft before it was cool, And as in that as in i remembered that i played the old early versions of it, so in a way it's still kinda a treat for me.

 

I seriously thought it was gonna be Crash Bandicoot.
I mean, it literally shows off several gaming allstars, Sonic punches Mario away, and I thought Crash was gonna bust out the megaphone all like: "plumber boy, mustache man. Your worst nightmare has arrived."
This makes Steve the second Microsoft character in Smash... MASTER CHIEF?

My nephews are going be so happy when they get home from school. They love minecraft and smash.

So we have two microsoft heroes in smash!

 

Well, I mean cool if your into minecraft I guess? I understand it from marketing standpoint but for a character I could not feel less motivated to buy the next pass. I wasn't even expecting one of the ones people ae screaming for, hell I went in with no expectations but still fel disappointed.

But again, sometimes things are not for me but for others, they have a few more slots left I could still be convinced.
