He also has a criminally underrated Thor run, right around the time Waid was doing his first Cap run and the Young Tony debacle.

I never read that, but vaguely remember it. I will have to check that out when I get time.

It's an easy to miss run, as at that point it's post "The Crossing" in Avengers, which is an era that's not well collected at all. It's also mostly forgotten as Marvel had pretty much penned the Image deal giving Fantastic Four, Avengers, Cap, and Iron Man to Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, so the writers were told to do whatever the hell they want. The Young Tony arc is so bad, and the Waid/Garney Cap run is so beloved, that the WMB Thor run just kinda is in there. But he pens maybe the best possible ending to Thor during the Onslaught crossover you can imagine. It's included in the "Best of Marvel" trade for that year alongside Waid's last issue on that first Cap run and the nearly silent Wolverine issue with Electra.

What you said is exactly why I missed it. It was in a very bland, if not just outright bad era of Marvel.

Messner-Loebs is criminally underrated in general. His creator-owned book Journey (which is what got him noticed by DC and Marvel in the first place) is great, too.

Anyway, this Flash tpb "Savage Velocity" collects the entirety of the Mike Baron run and first few Messner-Loebs issues. I hope they do a second (and third) volume, because the book ends right before some really great stuff. Also, José Marzan jr. should be coming on the book any issue now, which really kicks the art into overdrive. Rereading these stories for the first time in years has been a lot of fun.

From what I recall, it wasn't so much that the writers were told to do whatever they want, but that aside from trying to compete with Image, Marvel was also trying to compete with DC, who had successes with the replace/change the hero storyline (I'll need to check where I recall reading that but it may have been in the old Life of Reilly blog where creators were discussing behind the scenes the goings on at Marvel). That's the reason why we had the Clone storyline, Teen Tony, the whole Captain America slowly dying and meeting possible US-themed heroes/anti-heroes, same deal with the Punisher etc. In retrospect, it's amazing it wasn't so obvious at the time to the readers.

I was reading at the time, and it was pretty obvious. DC captured lightning in a bottle with the Death and Return of Superman, which was actually really well done.

But like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Rises, all the wrong lessons were learned. DC itself would go on to do Knightfall, which is a reasonable story, Emerald Twilight (which is hated by most GL fans), tease Flash getting replaced with Terminal Velocity (one of the great comic fake outs), and tinker with a lot of the other heroes up and down the line.

And Marvel would do AoA (which is fairly well done), the Clone Saga, and a variety of other dumb things.

DC Universe service switching to comics-only in 2021 as DC Universe Infinite | GamesRadar+

The DC Universe streaming service will be rebranded in 2021 as 'DC Universe Infinite,' with a focus exclusively on comic books - with the TV and film content the service has accumulated the past two years becoming exclusive to the recently-launched HBO Max streaming service.
    ...
DC Universe Infinite is scheduled to launch January 21, 2021, with plans for an international rollout in summer 2021.

The DC Universe Infinite service will have "more than 24,000 comics at launch…" On the surface, that's not much more than the current DC Universe service, which broke 23,000 comics back on May 12.

DC Universe Infinite will also keep the DC Universe community section alive, and make it available even to the general public without a subscription.

For those that signed up to DC Universe for the video content, HBO Max has a special price of $4.99/month available now through October 20.

The cost of DC Universe Infinite will be much the same as DC Universe - $7.99 a month, or $74.99 a year (which equates to $6.25 a month). Those that are subscribed to DC Universe Infinite by February 1, 2021 will receive a voucher for the DC Shop - $25 for annual subscribers, and $10 for month-to-month subscribers.

Stay tuned for more information on DC Universe Infinite here at Newsarama.

Said this would happen for awhile now. All of the WB"s stuff will end up under one roof and when this doesn't work well on it's own the comic content will likely end up on HBO MAX too after awhile.

I think this rebranded of DC Universe as DC Universe Infinite is a much better direction for the service, as it makes it much more competitive against Marvel Unlimited, plus it should make the availability within international markets much more easier than before.

Also, we’ve got the cover Dark Nights: Death Metal #7:

    Hard disagree.

Batman is a billionaire who decided the best way to improve society was to dress up in fetish gear and act like a ninja, beating up people at night.

I don't disagree with what he said, but I also don't believe for one second that he wrote those words himself. Much more likely it's one of his less-dumb-than-him assistants running his social media.

The two Flash issues that were released today were great!

    In The Flash (2016 -) #762:
The Flash ends up forgiving Reverse Flash, in order to create peace, and I believe he ends up making a Paradox, similar to Flashpoint, one in which Eobard Thawne no longer knows, nor becomes Reverse Flash, but he’s still involved with the death of Barry Allen’s mother:

While it might be possible for this to be undone, it certainly creates a unique, and somewhat happy ending for the Flash, and his family.

As for Dark Knight: Death Metal Speed, there’s a nice nod for Wally West:
He wears his Flash costume for a few pages:

Batgirl (2016 -) #49 was disappointing, because it recycled a plot point from Gail Simone’s run, where:
James Gordon Jr ends up being a villain, and ends up dying (for real, this time, and not a fake out like before), and when Commissioner Gordon finds Batgirl, he chargers her with man slaughter. This feels somewhat lazy to me, and I now wonder how everything will tie up in issue #50, as well as Nightwing (2016 -) #75 and Batman (2016 -) #100.

Batman Beyond (2016 -) #47 was business as usual.

That's crazy. Almost looks like the late, great Norm Breyfogle drew that panel.
