Decided to give the remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes a shot over the past few days. With only 24 episodes currently, it certainly wasn’t as daunting a task as watching the original was five months ago lol.

In the end, it’s still a good time (given it‘s still Legend of the Galactic Heroes, after all), but has a number of aspects that keep it considerably below the original.

It basically covers the same content as the first 26 episodes of the original, just in a more rushed manner. Some things from the prequel OVAs get added in, as well as some new scenes not from the original at all, but by and large things are either removed or significantly moved around. A character like Dusty, for example, doesn’t even show up until episode 12 (and has very little screen time in the show at all), whereas he appears in the very first episode of the original. Others like Rubinsky just have their introductions moved to later on than they occurred before. But ultimately, I feel the things that were cut ended up harming this remake in terms of its impact and strength of its characters.

It kind of gives me a new appreciation for some of the less interesting episodes of the original that got cut here, because they at least provided more character interactions to get you invested in them.

Things like Annerose getting kidnapped by the Kaiser’s old mistress, the nobleman trying to blow up the Kaiser, the Alliance soldier interacting with the Empire citizens on one of the planets they occupy during the invasion, all the backstory stuff with Kesler (who doesn’t even appear in this remake), all get cut.

That’s a big thing the remake struggles with: making you care about the characters. The cut content and rushed handling of major events restrict how much you’ll probably give a shit about what’s going on. Sure you’d probably still be invested in Yang, maybe Reinhard (though even that’s debatable), but probably not the others, if you were to watch this on its own.

So the main takeaway I’d provide is that you should certainly watch the original before giving this remake a shot. I really don’t think someone watching this would care if they don’t already know the characters from the original.

If you’ve seen the old one and want a version with updated animation and with things moved around and altered here and there, you’ll probably still get something out of this. It is still LOGTH after all, just not the best way to experience it. It’ll be interesting to see where the remake goes now that it just got 24 more episode greenlit.

It’s also interesting to experience the story with a dub, though I’m not fond of the pronunciations it chooses to use for a number of the characters (especially when it goes back an forth on a couple of them).

Plus, Frederica and Hilda are much cuter in their remake designs. Use that information as you so choose.

Finished G Gundam, such a great Gundam series (loads better than Wing IMO, love the
cameos of the UC Gundams in the last 2 episodes
). Currently on ep. 3 of Gundam The Origin (anime version, bur I prefer the OVA better)

    *Iroha fan* :(

I doubt I'll watch this season with any interest, saw the first couple of episodes and the whole Yukinon focus was a big "meh" for me.
At least there's like a doujin of Shizuka Sensei and Hikigaya that's nice and wholesome.

I mean, if pairing him with Yukino felt more justified and was written better I might not care so much, but the show doesn’t put any effort into doing that lol

Supposedly that’s because it cuts Yukino content from the source material, but I can’t directly vouch for that.

    Same here.

Yeah, they did. They gave Yui a bit too much screen time and cut some Yukino stuff from the LN.

I made the mistake of searching xfinity for Bubblegum Crisis. They have it! But only the English dub.

I have never heard the English dub. So I gave it a quick look. Skipped to a scene with Largo.

    My... God...

5 seconds. That’s all I could stand. That was the absolute worst ever. This was English dubbing from the late 80s/early 90s before they cared about quality. They knew that crap voice acting was people’s only option at the time, so they didn’t bother hiring good, real actors.

Man, that show needs to be updated with a redub.

The original? Because Tokyo 2040 had a really good dub. Not perfect, but good. Man, I wish someone would put 2040 on Blu-Ray along with Gankutsuou, Speed Grapher, RahXephon, Tekkaman Blade, Golion, Dairugger XV, Mospeada, and X (TV). I would say Macross too, but that series is fucked. I wish they would just put some god damn subtitles on the Japanese Blu-Ray so I could justify buying it.

Not sure if it differs any from the light novels, but I loved the manga, although I had to stop getting them at vol.6. Hopefully this gets all those Asuna haters to see her in a better light, and more Argo is always good. Less Kirito is absolutely always great too.

I can't wait to see Kizmel. I like Asuna much more in these books.
