I literally can't think of a better name for a Dinobot combiner than Volcanicus.

    Flawless nomenclature, tbh.

Add us Asia centric fans to the mix as well, please. We're ALL in for Takaratomy's Volcanicus. :D
Fyi, we're getting decent pre order numbers in for him and he's going to sell well.

Yes, I got him.* A nice figure**, but the joints are way too loose. I wanted to use him as one of Vulcanicus’s arms as the wings look like blades in arm mode, but he was too floppy to work properly so ended up being a leg.

I doubt I’ll be double dipping for this version, but for the sake of those who get this I hope his joint issues are sorted. I understand there are ways to fix loose joints but as it seems to involve rubbing gloop into things I’m a bit reluctant.

I also got 3D printed third party clip on missiles. (Shapeways I believe.) They’re not perfect but they look pretty good.

*It was a happy mistake actually. If I remember correctly, I went for the cheapest I could find online, and ordered that. It arrived in a brown box, which puzzled me (much as I like the box) and investigating further realised it was an exclusive!

** Of the deluxes I think Swoop may work best in humanoid mode. Don’t get me wrong, Sludge, Slag*** and Snarl aren’t bad figures. Quite nice in dinosaur mode in fact, and their humanoid modes aren’t bad, but they are rather weedy looking. It works with Swoop being a slimmer guy though. Roll on voyager/leader class versions of the other figures. Hoping the 86 line covers this and not for just Grimlock and Slag.

*** He’ll always be ‘Slag’ to me, but I was amused his name had been changed to ‘Slug’. I guess Hasbro found out hat the word ‘slag’ means here in the UK, aside from then intended slag-metal reference.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can remove the wing pins and swap the gray parts between a red (Generation Selects) Swoop and a blue (Power of the Primes) Swoop, which is what I did. Everything is easy except the wings. I did that for the Volcanicus I put with my Combiner Wars figures and left the blue Swoop alone for the one I put on my Unite Warriors shelf.

Oddly enough, at least on my copy, this also fixed all the looseness issues. The poor tolerances were in the new gray pieces, it seemed, and not the red torso. The blue torso that got the "new" pieces also suddenly became very floppy.

Well, that Swoop looks different that the Hasbro version, but I wouldn't say it looks better.

    (Shoulda painted them wings!)

Since I was late on the CW/UW train I'm hoping we will see more retooling or rerelease of that stuff. I suspect an animation-accurate Abominus is next, which I'd also skip (already got Terrorcons) and maybe an improved Predaking after if this is indeed Takara doing a Unite Warriors-esque redo of the POTP combiners. What I'm really interested to see however is if they will do Dinoking, since we have some Monstructor and Dinoking toolings for the POTP molds. It would be really great to see improved Predacons as well as the Pretender Monsters/Dinoforce for 2021 to go alongside more beasts in Kingdom.

    Oh why bother...

Takara already said they’re not planning on anymore extensive tooling like they did with previous selects and there’s not much you can do with abominous. The limbs are already accurate to their cartoon appearance. Only one they could do anything with is Hung-grr which would be what? Remove the molded itorso chest piece and make a removable one and a purple head? Is that honestly worth a $200+ box set.

Yeah you’ve already said that multiple times. We get it. You’re not buying it.

I think the new Takara version of swoop looks great. I'm looking forward to this new version of Volcanicus. I can't have enough Dinobots!

Swoop definitely looks better than the Hasbro version to me, with the red head. But still not different enough to warrant buying this set.

They should\'ve shown all three releases of this figure.  The original, the generations select, and this new one.

    probably passing on this.

got my KO version about two months ago. the big bad sword, reason why I went with the BPF version. not designed to store on the back, but there's a slot on each side where the sideways crossguard can hang.

He's not the only difference in this set though...
I tought that the G1 blue visor on Takaratomy Generation Selects Grimlock looks great too. What a simple color change can lead to a big visual impact, imho.

I think the Selects Red Swoop wasn't released by Takara, so they probably don't feel the need to include it in a comparison of products that are mainly for their market.

Yeah, but still a weak Grimlock mold, imo.

If any of those SS '86 rumors hold, I think a better Grimlock is coming. So why invest more in this one, with the tacked on combiner gimmick?

Plus, the combiner here REQUIRES some extra 3P solution. It looks skinny and shrimpy. I think it needs more BULK, as its made out of frickin' dinosaurs! :lol  And put some damn lasers on their heads!

Hate to say it but this seems insanely redundant. The potp decos were already g1 accurate, just put some labels on them. And $100 more? (I understand the prices have significantly increased for each class but that still means it will be a deterrant to buyers)

Dont wanna offend anyone who likes this, just kinda confused why it exists! :lol

Yeah, lots of nice little color tweaks, for sure. And I like the brighter gold (and I'm glad that they didn't just paint over the transparent bits with it... I like my dinobots with transparent bits).

Still, these molds aren't my favorite, and with at least two Studio Series dinos on the horizon I'm holding out to see those look. :)
