I agree the Dinobird leg ratchets have too much play, but given his elongated shape & strange weight distribution, it was always going to be a balancing act. I wouldn't call them "floppy", though.
There's a trick to get the rear tab into place. Tilt the shuttle up a bit, like it was using its heat shield (thrusters straight, shuttle tilted -- didn't realize until ER Sky Lynx that that's probably why shuttles have angled thrusters), &, as you push it forward, slowly tilt it down & into position & you should feel it thoop into place. You can tell it will hold, if done correctly. Once you lock the front down, he's solid.

Until I discovered this trick, by accident, I was a tad frustrated with getting him to lock together, too.
The wings do have a locking point. There's a bit of pressure needed to get them past a certain point.

There's a corner on the wing hinge. Pushing the wings down, over the edge, thoops them into a locked position.

I'm pretty sure this was intended, for a few reasons. 1) There's a protrusion on the wing part of the joint, which I'm pretty sure is providing the friction. 2) That could've been made longer, to prevent this (or just designed differently). & 3) When locked this way, the gap disappears, & it looks cohesive.

    Upside down, wing unsupported.

A bit unrelated. Having Sky Lynx in hand gives an explanation on Siege Skyfire's strangely painted legs & other bits. It looks to be the same color as Sky Lynx's underside, aka Sky Lynx's heat shield. I think that paint, which mostly ends up on Skyfire's underside, too, is also heat shielding.

I suspect NASA's involvement might've had something to do with the odd color choice for the heat shielding, which I always think of as dark colors (namely, black).

Are you at all familiar with the concept of a statue?

Well I'm no expert but this Skylynx thing makes for a pretty one.

    The whole undercarriage does nothing.

    NOTHING.

It's a big slab of blue plastic with a head.

And the top part has the skinniest legs possible.

They couldn't, AT THE VERY LEAST, balance the two more properly?

But that's Sky Lynx's design. Changing too much detracts from his G1-ness.

Also, the lynx portion has more dynamic legs than the pics show. There are extra joints, which I deploy only for combined mode.

Most vehicle modes are little more than shaped bricks, not all on wheels, if you want to simplify things that far.

By definition, statues are static, unmoving. ER Sky Lynx is very pose-able. Yes, the Dinobird has stability issues, but I can pose him just fine, with a little work.

It sounds mostly like you just don't like Sky Lynx to me.
That's a very dark path that I can not travel.

The character is interesting. No doubt.

The G1 toy was, shall we say, quite unique if not "that" interesting.

    But it was unique.

Now, 30 years later, I wished they'd kept the same overall form (I.E. 2 separate mode) but they could have designed it better.

With THAT much plastic (it's heavy) they could have made it do more.

And, most importantly, make SURE that BOTH modes are great, well designed and proportional.

They did do more, though. They threw in a non-intrusive base mode. Doesn't compromise Sky Lynx's transformation or pose-ability, at all. The only problem only comes into play if you have loose connections on the parts that swing out. Just because you may not appreciate the addition shouldn't negate that more was actually done.

Yeah, they did do more. Plus, he is way too poseable to be considered a statue.
Not even the super expensive Third Party Knock Off Inventa and Magma incorporated a base mode.

Er, how can he \"keep\" something that he never had originally? Methinks the main site\'s post needs a little bit of editing, for clarity.

It did, shot them back to back.

Done. Was thinking Headmaster singular but wrote out dual.

Nope, I always miss things, that's at least one of them for this round :) .
