Not necessarily irrelevant to the people paying for the figures. While I doubt the box Storm Shadow comes in is going to be a dealbreaker for anyone, a big part of the appeal this line has with collectors is its nostalgia and connection to the ARAH line.

No, it is irrelevant to the product. What the collectors want it to be is separate from what it is. And the product is Classified Stormshadow, not Ninja Force Joe Stormshadow.

Well, yes. I agree that technically speaking, what it is, is separate from what the Ninja Force figure was. Whether or not that bothers people, will probably vary from collector to collector. I was merely pointing out that it surprised me that they packaged the figure in a Cobra box. I don’t personally care whether Arctic Mission Storm Shadow is a G.I. Joe or a Cobra. Having said that though, there is a mythology to these characters that long time collectors are familiar with, and if Hasbro decides to ignore that, they do so at their own peril. I don’t think putting a Ninja Force-like Storm Shadow out as a Cobra really rises to that level, but I’m saying in a more general sense, of course the history and mythology are relevant to the license.

So, was out getting school clothes for the kids today after finally getting them to get rid of stuff that doesn't fit anymore, and I check the pegs at Target and stumble on three Cobra Commanders*. Didn't pick one up since I've already got one coming from CMDstore, but it's nice to know the wave is showing up. Amusingly CC was the only one on the pegs with both Gung-Ho and the Red Ninja missing. Good job packing CC three to a case Hasbro... fucking marketing I swear.

*Before it gets brought up since it's been happening here lately; no I didn't pick them up to offer to anyone else... I'm not obligated to do so nor do I have the extra funds to just buy stuff for my fellow collectors without the specific promise of immediate repayment or payment upfront*

That’s always the collector claim — a toyline that deviates from replicating what was done 40 years ago is going to fail. It never turns out to be. That was the essence of the criticisms of Classified when the figures were revealed, with collectors declaring they weren’t interested because the designs weren’t direct recreations of RAH.

the market certainly hasn’t shown those protests to reflect demand for the line.

Was the item actually locked out? Because that has been happening with Transformers in my experience where the system was actually locking out old and new items. Particularly around the time that Doubledealer was released. With Classified though I've not had that problem since the systems haven't actually been locking the figures out even though they're "street dated". Hell, even the Cobra Island stuff that did have a legit street date wasn't locked out of the system. Not around here anyway. Or are people seeing what you have and actually physically stopping you? That's some next-level shit right there if that's happening.

Some Target employees mistakenly believe that wave 2 is street dated, but it rings up fine.

I’ll let you know when I actually come across new Joes at Target lol. With their IT sourced out to Televipers, who the hell knows haha, I’m more likely to find wave 2 at GameStop/Walgreens/Walmart at this point.

Last person I talked to at Target looked like Bobby Boushay’s mom and pretty much told me Joes are the devil

I do not believe that any deviation on the part of Hasbro, from making exact replicas of what they’ve already done, only in 6 inch scale is going to spell catastrophe for Hasbro. Or even be unpopular for that matter. What I’m saying is, it would be a mistake for them to be dismissive of the mythology. The idea that cosmetic redesigns to the characters were going to spell failure, was never a point that I was trying to make. And I would agree with you, that it has not appeared to negatively affect the sales of the Classified line. I also think that it would be naive to think though, that the majority of these figures are being purchased by small children with no previous connection to G.I. Joe. That’s just not the case. The mythology matters. Not in a sense that people are going to flip out if you change their uniforms-Hasbro has been doing that for nearly forty years. But completely ignoring the line’s history would be something different.

You'd think the Televipers would only be stopping the sale of Joes while letting the Cobra sales happen! :lol  ;)  Especially their grand and illustrious leader!

I think the thought process was cobra comander will be more recognizable and might draw the attention of a non joe collector the the line based on nostalgia, and in all honesty that might happen. The other figures have all been flying off the shelf so fast that any person who collects other lines and doesn't really pay attention to this line or hasnt been able to find this line or whatever may get their introduction to the line via cobra commander.
