DC events Crisis on Infinite Earths and more get infected by the Dark Multiverse in December | GamesRadar+

Writer Steve Orlando and artist Mike Perkins are giving a surprise retcon twist to the end of arguably DC's biggest event ever with December 15's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths.

"When the Anti-Monitor's deadly grudge match with the Multiverse was finally foiled, there was only one Earth left! But which Earth? That was crucial to what would happen next. In one timeline, Earth-1's Superman stopped the Superman of Earth-2 from going into final battle, but in the Dark Multiverse, it's Jor-L of Earth-2 who survives, changing the landscape for all that follows!," reads DC's description of this alt-universe twist.

"When Surtur comes looking to crush all life, the beleaguered heroes jump into their next big battle, jumping from one Crisis to the next...but will the last days of the Justice Society of America play out differently if Green Lantern Alan Scott steps into the darkness?"

December 1's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: War of the Gods by writer Vita Ayala and artist Ariel Olivetti revisits the Wonder Woman-centric event but with Wonder Woman twisted to become a villain in the story.

"In this 48-page, $5.99 Prestige Format one-shot, the realms of the gods have been turned upside down and inside out, on the verge of engulfing Earth and its people. Only one hero stands to defend it: Wonder Woman!," reads DC's description. "But this dark mirror image of an epic tale features a Wonder Woman who is ready to destroy our world!

"Cursed by the evil goddess of magic, Hecate, the Amazon warrior princess Diana has become a weapon of vengeance ready to tear down any god or superhero that stands in her way," the synopsis continues. "Will Earth and its heroes survive her might? Or are they doomed to worship the dark princess of the Amazons for the rest of eternity?!"

    Screenshot_20200910-225731.jpg

And finally Dark Nights: Metal co-creator/writer Scott Snyder himself, along with co-writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, will be imagining what if the event which spawned the Dark Multiverse one-shots ended differently with December 29's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Dark Nights: Metal.

"In the event-defining epic Dark Nights: Metal, the Justice League defeated the vile Barbatos and his Dark Knights to save our universe from sinking into the abyss of the Dark Multiverse. But... what if they failed? What if Barbatos reigned victorious?" DC's description reads

"Enter an alternate timeline where the DCU as you know it has been dragged down into the darkness. Witness the Justice League you once knew, hideously transformed into dragons who serve at the mercy of evil.

"Duke Thomas, the Last Monitor, will have to seek out Nightwing and the few remaining survivors of the Metal event to assemble the Final Justice League in an attempt to save the Multiverse."

The one-shot, described as "the biggest, loudest arena rock concert in the history of the DC Universe," will be drawn by Karl Mostert and Trevor Scott.

All three 48-page one-shots will be priced at $5.99 each, with primary covers by David Marquez.

Huh, can't say I ever saw them revisiting War of the Gods.

Talk about a rare sight though, a dark multiverse story where it isn't Bat-centered.

It’s an iconic Wonder Woman story from George Perez.

Of f's sake. I'm sick of the Batman who used to laugh but is now dark Dr Manhattan who laughs and all this Dark Universe crap. It's been going on for way too long now.

George Perez's event from the early 90s that served as a finale to his Wonder Woman run.

It's an interesting premise and has some good moments but is sadly not very good overall because of problems he and DC editorial were having at the time (at least as far as I recall).

You know, I was watching the Dark Knight Rises this past weekend, and I think I now support the BatCat pairing at the very least through process of elimination. Most of Batman's more interesting relationships come from adaptations (like Andrea Beaumont and Wonder Woman in the DCAU). But if you look at the people he's been involved with in the comics, you have very old flames that haven't been lit in years like Silver and Vicky (who would be kind of boring in these days, I think), you have Talia, who is a rapist (Talia might actually be the meanest Batman villain. At least Joker likes the guy, in his own way), and then there's Selina, whose greatest crime is that they can't just commit to using her so she flakes on and off constantly.

Justice League: Ron Marz and Andy Lanning Bundle Up for DC's Endless Winter (Exclusive)

Ron Marz: Andy Lanning rang me up and said "Alex from DC is in touch, does this sound like something you'd want to do?"

So it just fell into place and the initial sort of winter aspect to this was Andy's and, as it's evolved over the months that we've been working on it, there's kind of a nod to the world that we live in now which is the pandemic world and everybody being sort of isolated. So a lot of that stuff played into the story, I feel like it gives it another layer of dimension.

It's not just "Hey, there's a big winter storm!" but part of it isn't just how do the JLA deal with this thing going but how do regular people in the real-world deal with suddenly being cut off from one another, suddenly living in a very different world than they did a few months ago. We're not getting too heavy-handed with it, but there's certainly those aspects in there that I think will, unfortunately, hit home for everybody because we're going to be in this world for a while.

While it appears that we're cribbing from old Justice Society issues, we're actually cribbing from Norse mythology.

I think first and foremost, it's a big, cool superhero adventure. All that stuff: The sense of isolation from the pandemic, the climate change aspect of the past being uncovered, all of that is sort of the underpinning of what we're doing here. Come for the big, fun superheroics, stay for the big, thematic stuff we're trying to thread through there too.

It's a big, fun superhero story with big stakes. Yes, there's character stuff and, yes, there's quiet moments, but there's a lot of cool superhero action and that's kind of what everybody shows up for. Big, fun superhero action drawn by a really amazing collection of artists. And I feel like this is going to be something that you're going to read every week in December, multiple issues some weeks. Hopefully, this is our and DC's holiday gift to everybody, because I think we're pretty proud of how it's all turning out, this is going to be a good one.

It's part of the above-mentioned Bendis final comics for Superman.

As to the update/redesign, maybe there'll be an explanation in the stories.

Well at least Bendis will be gone, and the next writer will have to figure out how to undo most of what he's done. How long till the secret identity is back? Hope they deage his son too. Retcon or Reboot incoming...

The League should really do a sweep of the polar regions after this event. The First Born, the Dead King, this Not-Laufey. There's dozens of baddies up there.

It's like they took the parts of having trunks I liked the least and combined it with the parts of not having trunks that everyone else liked the least.

That's the worst fucking thing I've ever seen. Who thought this was a good update? Why an update in the first place? Every variation on his original has been awful but I think this one takes first place.

It’s probably just for a cover. I know Rafael Grampa has done various artistic interpretations of heroes in the past, that don’t necessarily match anything in any book.
