None of us have our hands on the game, obviously. But we did get some voiced cut scenes in the trailer, so I'm going to go with "there is at least some story."

That's fair. Any experience with the previous game in the series?

I haven't played the other Warriors/Musou games all that much, but they tend to have some story progression between missions IIRC.

Eh I'll pass. The Hyrule Warrior style of gameplay looks very boring and unappealing.

I never played the previous Warriors games but I’m excited for this one. We get to see Hyrule before it gets destroyed, play as the champions and learn more of the BotW story, which all sounds delicious to me. I’m guessing I won’t really love the playing style at first since I’m not used to this style of game.

I’ve been working my way through Master Mode on BotW during the pandemic and really enjoying it. The Master Sword trials are so much more nasty this time around :lol

I've never actually tried Zelda 2 on new game plus. Its neat and kinda weird to have all my spells and sword techniques from the get-go, but not my extra health and magic bars.

I've played both DW and HW games, and for what they are, they are mindless fun. If they truly are adding canon Story to the series through this, then it could be interesting. It needs a bit more depth in terms of tactics, TBH, or where your choice in weapon makes a difference (and Link packs enough to be able to have this as a choice). It would be nice if they kept some of the other BOTW mechanics, like the cooking, weapon breakage, etc.

What I don't get is that if they're saying it's canon, then doesn't that mean you automatically lose (unless you can be the bad guys) since we already know they lost that battle in BOTW? If you win, then wouldn't BOTW not happen? Or are they just going to say alternate timeline garbage?

Please, this is Zelda. Alternate timelines are pretty much the standard now.
That said, I fully expect the story to be a foregone conclusion as it ends on a hopeless fight, setting the stage for the events of BOTW to occur, outside of the possibility of alternate endings.

There are things they could do to mitigate the "you have to lose the war" issue. For example, they could make it clear that you're preventing an even worse outcome by putting up a good fight. Then end with an epilog that flashes forward to Breath of the Wild showing how thanks to your efforts, Link and Zelda were able to defeat Calamity Ganon 100 years later, and the peoples of Hyrule survived to rebuild.

Not sure how well that would work out. BotW seemed to make it pretty clear that a lynchpin of Ganon's success was gaining control over the Guardians and Divine Beasts. And unearthing and using them was not only a goal of Hyrule as a country, but also Zelda herself. By all indications, Ganon turned their attempt to create a defense against him into his path to near-decisive victory. If Zelda hadn't suddenly manifested her divine bloodline's power (something she was more or less against cultivating; she was more interested in studying the ancient technology than constantly praying and traveling to Hylia's altars/shrines) while trying to flee, it would have been worse.

Basically, I'm not sure how they can turn what was presented as almost literally a deus ex machina that prevented Ganon's complete and total victory, yet still required a 100 year resting period for Link to heal, into a "it could have been worse" situation.

The Divine Beasts were an amazing concept and I thoroughly enjoyed engaging all 4 of them, along with the creative game play they had involved with getting them under control.

As a Warriors game, it's going to be focused primarily on the melee battles fought by the Champions. I get the impression those went pretty well until Gannon took control of the guardians, after which everything fell apart quickly. It's not hard to imagine that had the battles gone poorly from the start, there would be no more Gerudo Town, Goron City, Hateno, Kakariko, Rito Village, or Zora's Domain, and perhaps no more people to save at all. Had things gone even a little worse at the end, there'd be no more Link to save anyone later.

As it is, Gannon's victory is basically taking Hyrule Castle and destroying the immediate area around it. The vast majority of Guardians are destroyed, Gannon's army of monsters is wandering in disarray, and Gannon himself is confined to the ruins of Hyrule Castle until Zelda wears out. It's less a win than a very grim, temporary stalemate.

They'll probably force it in with the rest of the garbage timeline.

I don't think you're playing to win. You're playing for time up to when Zelda eventually uses her powers to basically trap Ganon in the castle with herself and sends a mortally wounded Link away to sleep it off for 100 years. Chances are, you'll get to play each champion right up to the moment when Ganon kills each of the warriors and takes their Divine Beasts.

It'd be nice if they would incorporate a little bit of world exploration in-between the missions but I doubt they will. We'll probably go chapter by chapter through the story, running each mission along the way.

I mean if people want a happy ending they could end on a battle just before link goes down, and after the credits just tease the start of the fight to connect the games, but I'm the werid guy who enjoys seeing things end badly in these type of situations (IE I know it ended but at this point I wanna see how bad it went).

We'll probably see how terrible of a dad Zelda had.

I just want a mix of Zelda characters again. Please don't restrict character selection & weapons to BotW.

Huge amount of the fun are the extra modes, with the characters and weapons

Lots and lots of dodging. They're really fun to fight once you know how to do it.

There's some story, but it's mostly you being a god.
