So is it actually 100% confirmed that this is in fact just a FIRST part to a two-part movie/saga? Only asking because I never knew that until I read a few posts here commenting on it, and I can't say I've seen it prominently mentioned or advertised anywhere either.
I don'tknow if it was all shot, but the movie only covers the first half, and so I am concerned about them moving characters like Chani around so she is in both films. Edit Doesn't sound like it was all shot at once. Denis Villeneuve Explains Why ‘Dune’ Will Be Split into Two Movies
Yeah it’s definite two movies. I am surprised it’s not being brought up more. They haven’t even started shooting the second half. Only thing that worries me. It’s hard to do a continuous story without a time jump and have it feel right. Of course better to go longer and get the story right.
Yeah I did some digging around after I asked that, and all I could eventually find was Villeneuve saying he apparently only signed on if he could do 2 movies, that the second one hasn't even been green lit yet, and a producer (I think?) saying that THIS movie is a fully realized stand alone film as-is that could go other directions IF there's a sequel. Guess that explains the overt lack of mentioning it's an intended first part - seems like they're indeed pulling the usual studio "let's how this does before actually moving forward with a second one" method contrary to Villeneuve's expectations. Sure hope it works it out for everyone.
...Ok so its like what New Line did with IT. Dune Chapter 1 2020 Dune Chapter 2 20xx. I can't wait to see down the road what Dune Messiah will look like.
I’m not all that familiar with Dune, so I went into this trailer somewhat blind. I’ve seen bits and pieces of the David Lynch movie, and I know all the main things that people reference like the spice and the giant worms. You could always count on most of my engineering professors in college to either pull out a Dune reference or a Star Trek reference lot. I definitely understood their Star Trek jokes more. With all of that being said, I’m a little more than whelmed. I’m not really excited or put off by the trailer. I don’t really like the costume designs, but I’m pretty sure those are accurate to the source material. Some shots did look really beautiful as you would expect from Villeneuve. I didn’t get much of a sense of plot or character from the trailer although I understand that Dune is very complicated, so it would be hard to convey everything in 2 minutes. The giant sand worms look awesome though, and it really make me want to see Burt Gummer from Tremors take one on with the biggest gun he could find.
It would be interesting if he covers the whole plot in the first movie. I think a logical stopping point is when Paul becomes Muad’dib and the Messiah and shuts down a lot of spice production. Then have Fayd come for the second movie, do the Kwisatz Haderach thing. There is so much world-building that needs to happen in the first movie.
Yeah, more or less, but remember they never started calling the first one Chapter 1 on a broad public marketing level until there was a Chapter 2. If the first one bombed and a Chapter 2 never happened, it would have just remained IT, period. Sounds like a very similar thing going on here. Just reminds me once again how the Peter Jackson approach to LOTR was, and forever will be, THE way to do it when it comes to trilogies or even a hoped-for duology like this. I mean, when it actually works out, that is. Heh it's obvious why most studios have serious apprehensions about financing 3 movies upfront these days, but still... it really is the way to go. No worries about a sequel not happening... no worries about actors changing, bailing or dying... just get everything in the can and then spend years putting it altogether.
So, yeah, this looks pretty fantastic. As a long time fan of the books so far this looks to be what I want from a Dune film. I told my wife we're going to see this in theaters and she was like "what's Dune?".
I don't know that they'll have to move her around. Aside from seeing her in visions early in the story, this movie clearly covers Paul and his mom encountering the Fremen in the desert after Spoiler Duncan's death and escaping from Kynes's place. We see them in the thopter being buffeted by the storm in the trailer. The question is how much time they spend with the Fremen before this first movie ends. It could be that more than half the book is covered in this movie, and then the second half is stretched out a little in the next movie.
Sorry, I have to point out the sandworm and see how crazy it looks. That's heck of a design to make it look like a giant iris.
Hey dude, you've had your entire married life to educate her on Dune - no one to blame but yourself But for real this looks fantastic.
She doesn't read books (she's not really capable thanks to insanely terrible dyslexia) so anything sci-fi, especially heady sci-fi, has to come in the form of a movie. I've tried to get her to watch the first one, but she's fallen asleep twice.
There's a picture of her and Paul together, and one of the magazines described it as them being in Arrakeen together. I hope that was misinformation.
Oof, I hope that's a mistake. But we probably do have to be prepared for there to be some deviation from the source material. Mostly small, hopefully, but some big. It's inevitable.
How familiar are you with Warhammer 40k? Games workshop stole a whole shit load of plot bits from the Dune series.
