Again I wouldn’t say that I’m boycotting because the trailers looked boring to me, but I probably would boycott if I was interested. Either way, this movie isn’t getting my hard earned money.
Just watched john campeas review. He more or less said "It's cute but that's it. Wait for it to be free." Ouch! Rob's review was pretty much the same! "Wait for the free release."
I'm not really boyotting either, but since I don't have a family with kids, there's very little incentive for me to pay 30 dollars for a movie I would generally just pay around 7 dollars to see during a free morning. I understand the pricing is more of a bargain for heads of households that are used to paying so much to bring the whole family to a theater, that's just not me.
Regarding Yifei's comments, this article sums up my opinions on it perfectly: Before You #BoycottMulan, Consider the Context Regarding the controversial filming location, I am very confused. The territory is controversial for basically repeating the same humanitarian atrocities that occurred under the rule of a certain infamous dictator of the 1940's, so how the hell did Disney not see that as major controversy material that should be avoided from the start? They were either not aware or just REALLY sloppy about hiding any kind of corrupt agenda. I can be open-minded about Yifei's situation that may go far deeper than what we give it credit for, but this one just puzzles me. I'm really trying to keep an open mind here because I sincerely feel like everything we're hearing is a one-sided story and as western audiences we have the privilege of freedom of speech and being able to call each other out that we take for granted, but I am not going to insult anyone because the concerns are still valid things to be upset about. The film on its own is fine but leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to the original. I didn't mind Mushu or Li's absence. Wait for it to be free on Disney+. The character of the Witch was the most interesting character, and she honestly deserved far more screen-time and moments. I didn't have an issue with Mulan's Qi story, it may take away from her 1998 iteration but she still has her own struggles here. Regardless, the film isn't grand or good enough to warrant such a tidal wave of controversy. If I missed something important or anyone has a point to bring up, do so but respectfully please. You could also just DM me to keep this board clean to prevent it from getting messy. On the plus side, at least we got two beautiful songs from Christina Aguilera. Tl;Dr Chinese celebrities, especially ones with big followings, can face huge life-risking repercussions for speaking against the Chinese government if they have major ties to the country, regardless of where they live, and because of that Liu Yifei's controversy so far seems very one sided and in need of a context-check. As for the controversy behind the filming location, Disney was either very sloppy about hiding whatever agenda they're trying to hide OR need to seriously re-vamp their location scouting department if it's going to miss seeing a problem of that magnitude, and it's stupid on Disney's part either way. For either case, we don't know the whole story but need to do so to have a full understanding of it before we go cancelling each other left and right.
They literally thank those responsible for the atrocities in the credits. Kind of hard to claim ignorance.
Does Disney know they are committing atrocities though? Like I said, if they didn't know about it, that's fucking stupid on their part for missing something big like that. Or if they did know, they were very sloppy with hiding a possibly corrupt agenda. Either way, Disney was stupid about this no matter how you look at it.
Yeah, without getting too political the fact is basically everyone knows it's happening, it's just no one is willing or able to do anything about it. This is just a bad move by Disney no matter how you look at it.
As someone of Chinese background, a part of me wishes I could talk about this stuff but obviously we all know the rules around here.
Just disappointed with how saddled this movie is with all of its various baggage and how poorly Disney handled the project from the get-go. The eyewatering price for Disney+ viewing also is not helping its case. I really liked the original (even as the animated sequel kinda betrays Mulan's character with its about-face regarding duty to family/country and doing what makes you feel good), but I'll wait until this movie is available for cheaper or free later down the road.
花木兰 (豆瓣) Now that the movie is out in China. The ratings on Douban (Chinese IMDB) are pretty abysmal. Right now it's 4.8/10. This isn't me dissing the movie; I'm just pointing out the observation that there is a disconnect that is formed from this film.
At one time I was really looking forward to Mulan, but the more I found out about the stuff that's been going on, I just kind of lost my taste. .. I'm not blaming the cast, etc, but, when you know the kind of things that innocent people are going through in the vicinity of the filming location (in a tip of the iceberg kind of way) and the supposedly family-friendly Disney's attitude to the whole situation (WTH are they thinking?), let's just say, I probably won't be bothering with this particular franchise.
I just finished watching it. I wouldn't pay $30 to see it. Unless you've got kids. It was just ok. When they announced that the movie would be more serious, and that there would be no singing and no Mushu, it never bothered me. And I was hoping that with that warning ahead of time would help me to enjoy watching this film. But since the film was so lacking of emotions, I really ended up missing the comedy and the singing. It's still a kids movie, so the war fighting is still severely toned down. I felt like I was watching a Narnia movie.
Meh, the Avenue-X lady didn't care for it, I think she was kind of brutal though as she normally reviews Chinese dramas.
So...in short, she says Disney "effed it up." I think I'll just stick to the previous live version produced in 2009.
