What happens to the seats and the steering wheel and what not when transformers transform? Has this ever been answered?

the vehicle mode interior simply folds into the robot mode. Sometimes it just kind of dissapears to become a chest compartment(Optimus primes matrix). In some insistences there might be enough space for a human to survive transformation into robot mode like With Miko stowing away inside Bulkhead. I've seen other non cannon joke comics that show the predictably fatal consequences you'd expect if you were inside a car or truck transforming into a robot. Others like X-brawn can have a full standard vehicle interior but can still bring out their head inside the vehicle mode alongside the human driver(a joke on were X-brawns head winds when he's in vehicle mode)

For continuities that don't use liquid metal, nanobot, or protoform-style conversions, i.e. settings that try to go full Alternators and say that they keep both forms' parts in both modes, there is no answer. This is why the conversion process requires liquid metal/nanobots/protomatter/Transformium (even if it's a bad name), to get functional vehicles and robots without compromising either form.

I was actually talking about an old web comic I found years ago with G1 style optimus who opens his chest to show a guy inside crushed to death when he transformed. can't for the life of me find it though assuming its even still on the internet

Car parts transform into robot parts.

 

In-universe they're probably supposed to fold away inside the robot, in execution they tend to disappear from the animation. Even the movie designs don't tend to feature car interior parts, which is kind of weird considering those designs incorporate tons of intricate car details into the robot modes.

Even in G1 it'd be different for different bots. G1 Seekers had their cockpit spaces untouched by transformation - in Marvel G1 it was used for moving their human prisoners around.
