The movie is part one of two, and with where they are dividing it, I am almost certain that they are going to have to mention it to explain why Chani is in part one.

I think I'm most excited by the cast and director. The visuals are what's 50/50 for me so far. I'm hoping it's because everything we've seen is pre-CGI, but the aesthetic seems so sparse. Big, blank walls, super simple sets, etc.

Paul compares himself to hitler in dune messiah, and gloats to stilgar he killed wayyyyy more people. Herbert definitely wanted to compare paul to fascist leaders, and the qizarate to the advanced bureaucracy of an authoritarian state. If the uniforms look a little fashy I imagine it's to hold the audience's hand into that.

I get that, after the events of Dune. But I mean the world he grew up in. Leto definitely was not like that. If Herbert wanted to compare Muad'Dib to fascists, but the movie begins with Paul being raised inside a fascist state, where's the character arc?

oh i didn't say the atreides were fascist, they are, in as much as its worth anything, the least authoritarian major house in the known universe. Its just that there's certainly a tendency within the the major houses to become authoritarian that none of them are above, as paul ends up showing.

I see the uniforms as more reminiscent of early sci-fi, which wasn't too flashy or adventurous but looked at what/how societies/cultures would be in an another land. The uniforms seem more militant and aristocratic in that view.

More aristocratic is exactly what I'd like to see. The picture above looks like they just jumped out of an unmarked black van and they're about to make a kindly gypsy family disappear.

"It’s about the destiny of a people, and the different way that cultures have dominated other ones," Oscar Isaac revealed. "How do a people respond when it’s at the tipping point, when enough is enough, when they’re exploited? All those things are things we’re seeing around the world right now."

It was leaked prematurly, and then removed. Anyway, it sounds cool enough.

Considering how much Lucas "borrowed" from other sci-fi, including Dune...

Ol Frank had some thoughts on the star war let me tell ya:

"From the most ancient times, the knowledgeable had preferred to surround themselves with fine woods rather than with the mass-produced artificial materials known then as polastine, polaz, and pormabat latterly: tine, laz, and bat). As far back as the Old Empire there had been a pejorative label for the small rich and Families Minor arising from the knowledge of a rare wood’s value. “He’s a three P-O,” they said, meaning that such a person surrounded himself with cheap copies made from déclassé substances. Even when the supremely rich were forced to employ one of the distressful three P-Os, they disguised it where possible behind O-P (the Only P), pilingitam"

Well, let's not pretend Herbert didn't in turn borrow from other sources. It's endless, once you start going down that rabbit hole. I just thought it was a funny visual.

I actually don't disagree with what you're saying here. Pretty much everything has been a "remake" or a "reboot" or a "re-imagining" since our ancient ancestors learned to talk and draw. Ooghah told a story. Booghah did a "graphic novel" on a cave wall, and their grandkids retold the same story for their generation, but with "modern" sensibilities.

i mean Herbert cribbed quite a bit from TE Lawrence's life, but to say that he did so on the same scale or for the same effect as Star Wars' job on dune is talking almost exclusively out of your arse.

If you feel that way, or if you think that's the only source Herbert took inspiration from, go ahead, I guess.

And I think your estimation of Lucas' stealing from Herbert may be overstated. Luke's journey is in the exact opposite direction from Paul's. The points of both stories are diametrically opposed. There are definitely stolen elements, no question. But they're mostly surface elements used for different effect. And many other shared similarities between the two are also shared with hundreds if not thousands of other previously existing works that predate both Star Wars and Dune by a lot.

Like the biggest influences on Herbert were Lawrence, and asimov's foundation stuff. Beyond that, nobody was fucking with psychedelic drugs, eugenic space witches, and Kabbala, let alone critiques of fascism in sf in the 50s. The nearest effort is maybe the lensman stuff, maybe.

On the other hand, you cannot swing a laser sword in star war for hitting a dune reference. It's just not the same.
