How does Volcanicus's head seem like Bruticus's head other than it having a visor? By that logic, where are the people saying, "look, it's Beachcomber!"

Edit: Also, Bruticus doesn't have a visor:

If this is somehow Dinoking, I don't want to ever hear again about how terrible Hasbro's Liokaiser was and how Takara will one day save us with a more accurate version.

The G1 Predacons were originally planned to debut in the movie as Autobots, but plans changed and they ended up debuting later as a Decepticon team.

But if Takara was going to make them, they have a perfectly good Predaking to repaint already.

In the initial planning stages, the Predacons were Autobots called Anibots. Early drafts of the movie script had Ultra Magnus call for them to be released from an Autobot City zoo to help defend the city, they'd combine into a giant dragon.

But that plot line got dropped from the movie and the finished toys were Decepticons as were familiar with them now.

That's actually not a bad idea. Like an alternate version of Slash or a small Ankylosaur-bot that turns into armor to bulk up the torso?

As I said previously, if the basic Dinobots stay essentially the same, I'm not too interested, but that'd be a clever way to improve the Volcanicus mode at least.

Not quite true - there’s no actual proof (other than fan theory) that the Anibots and the Predacons are related at all.

To recap: there was a group called the Anibots, a team of Autobot animal transformers that featured in early drafts of the 86 movie script. But the line up of the team was different (one of them was a leopard), they were green (rather than red/yellow/orange/black) and instead of combining into a big robot, they combined into a ‘Mechano Beast’).

The Predcaon toy was designed by Akitaka Mika (his only work on the Transformers line), and in an interview he states that the Predacon design was completed before the movie, and that later he tried to design toys for the movie (including a transforming skyscraper) that were never greenlit.

It’s also true that the combining animal gimmick was not a particularly original idea at the time (think Voltron), and that it’s entirely likely that the Anibots and the Predacons were developed separately, given that combining animals was an obvious move.

Indeed, the reason why Akitaka Mika eventually went to work for Bandai is because Bandai also had a robot on the market with a lion head on its chest (called Daltanious), which only reinforces the point that the design was derivative of many other robot toys already on the market. Due to the resemblance, Bandai tried to sue Hasbro over the Predaking design, but were nevertheless so impressed with the toy that they ended up headhunting the designer.

TL;DR: Early drafts of the 86 movie featured combining Autobot animals, which some people think are related to the Predacons due to some overlap with the types of animals in both teams. However the Predacons had already been designed prior to the movie, and combining animal toys were commonplace, so the similarities may have been coincidental.

I think more interesting than the obvious Volcanicus head os the orange behind it. Because that's not a normal part of his profile.

"Animation accurate" PotP Dinobots would be pointless since Studio Series is about to unleash those. And they'll be in stores before this.

It's almost certainly something different. And given the tooling changes we've seen from Takara so far, assuming they're still Dinobots even feels like a stretch.

Several people have already pointed out that those are sword handles based on his Earth Wars in game model / Fall of Cybertron Grimlock's sword.

I've been waiting for them to do something like this for a while now. I honestly thought the Seacons were going to do that with the 6th member.

I want this to be Dinoking or something equally cool, but I think this is going to be a revisiting of the PotP dinobots before the new molds drop. It's like how Takara did Movie the Best right before Studio Series was revealed.

Maybe not in stores in Japan, though, it's still going to be awhile.

Plus if it's something entirely new I think it's strange that they left Volcanicus' head straight up unchanged like that.

That was Hasbro's pipedream, though, so it's just PROOF that it was in the planning stages at one point but not necessarily what Takara has in mind.

But given the usual release cycle of these Selects, even if the reveal came this week it's unlikely the figures would be out until well past when SS86 is revealed and on its way to stores.

God Neptune is slated for October, which would put these likely around November/December at the earliest.

Also, for anyone curious...God Neptune was teased May 12th and fully revealed May 14th. So it's not completely unreasonable to think we'll see this as soon as Friday.

Catching up on this thread from overnight is hilarious when someone randomly says “I think that’s the Volcanus head” after 20 other people already did.

Dinoking is still my best guess, though the head makes it lose points. I actually hope it’s ankrner Grand Galvatron style project. We know it’s likely all beasts based on the “beast warriors” thing, so if it’s NOT Dinoking, what other molds do we have that are beasts? Dinobots, Terrorcons, Seacons. Most of which are retools of each other. *shrug* I don’t know. Dinoking is still the best guess with Kakuryu missing because he became Grimmaster. Honestly TT can justify anything with their crazy fun fiction.
