I admittedly don't know a lot about the toy industry but are there people that use conventions like this for networking as well as showing off new products? Virtual conventions can work well based on DC's success with Fandome but I'm assuming that there's a component that fans themselves also don't see? I understand that E3 outside of being a showcase is also good for developers to meet other developers.

Conventions like this are the reason we have Transformers. It's not at all uncommon for toy companies to sent reps to foreign toy shows.

Toy fair is basically exclusive for the industry, different stores send their reps, whereas SDCC or NYCC are for fans. So yes quite a few discussions go on.

It's just not the same as the days when I'd wait for Nintendo Power to cover winter/summer CES. I still play games, occasionally, but there's no anticipation.

My last job had Throatpunch Thursdays.

Seams like the problem is that it's being held in new York. Why not just move it to another city? Possibly forever.

Because NY has the most strict Corona virus lock down in the nation. As we have already seen both the dnc and rnc were already able to hold their conventions in two different states with little to no problems. New York is dead, time to move on.

It's probably just for a couple of weeks or months. I don't think we won't see a NYTF all year.

So no toy fair in any form until some time in spring 2021? Wow and even that might change to a later date or not at all

I mean... there's a reason for the lockdown.

The toys are going to exist. But even if they wouldn't, a toy isn't worth people's safety.

How do officials in New York know that by early February 2021 things will still not be safe? How long until things are safe again? My state is completely open now, had a minimum lockdown, and is ready to do business. If New York can’t or won’t do business by February of 2021 then move the event somewhere else. Somewhere that is willing to do business. Why should the people of the other 49 states have to stop doing business because New York said no?

By a magical thing know as science and another thing that arose out of the darkness called mathematics.....I know 2020 is still in the stone age but we are making progress.

EDIT: Not meant to offend you. Just wanted to make a funny remark.

    You Forgot Totally Tubular Tuesday!

How about they just abandon the prom Queen NYC because her time is over & just have 4 regional gatherings plus the virtual stuff? Allows fans to do their whole interact & spread the virus thing plus allows retailers to advertise their products with minimal cost.

The day of the large convention is mostly over at this point. There will not be an allowance for permits or insurance coverage for large public gatherings without admission going to cost north of 4-500 each now. I will miss my anime conventions.

Not sure how other companies are doing it but I actually like the Fan First events. No digging around tons and tons of reveals to get to what you collect. I like that we get a focus on a few products at the time over the year instead of everything at once at just a handful of events. A pre-order link for the cool new stuff they showed off instead of put buy that cool thing on your to do list. Getting to watch the Hasbro team do the presentation even if you can't get to New York or San Diego.

The article mentions the Toy Hall of Fame, so here's a link to the nomination page. Transformers absolutely meets the first three criteria, and might even get on on that last one.

    • Icon-status: the toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered.
    • Longevity: the toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations.
    • Discovery: the toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play.
    • Innovation: the toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first
