In the end, I don't have too many objections to him being a tank since it allows for consistency across Evergreen, Cyberverse and CHUG - my point being that while CHUG could probably make a gun Megatron work, Family Dollar Megatrons wouldn't be able to at their price point and I don't think Hasbro wants to market gun Megatron in Cyberverse.

But, again, I'd really, REALLY like to see Hasbro design a proper G1 cartoon robot mode with a tank mode. Earthrise just misses the mark. I wonder if Walmart's RED line was born out of the fact that Hasbro just gave up and said "here's your CHUG G1-cartoon accurate Megatron - wait, we can do other characters too!".

 

Before they either of those decos they need a mold that homages the design.

 

G1 Megatron is a tank now. Though I’d love if they utilized some modes from other fiction... Energon (ship), Cybertron (batmobile), Animated (copter), etc.

 

I'm fine with a tank, but I really like TR Megatron being a jet and a tank. What I think might bee a good compromise with have Megatron be what ever tank, jet, space thing alt mode, but include a gun mode accessory with him for other figures to use.

 

I could see a new Laser Optimus with a Selects retool with a more G1 head and these decos working pretty well.

 

Feel free to not have the conversation then. I am not privy to what Hasbro thinks. I'm just making an observation based on what they did with Shockwave.

 

But they didn't "do" anything to Shockwave. He doesn't look like a gun anymore than Sixshot looked like a gun.

Also, even if you turn him upside...he still doesn't look anything like a gun despite looking kinda like his G1 alt.

This is a gun. There is no mistaking it is a gun.




This is an upside down space ship. They even put a very obvious command tower on the "top" of it.

While I agree with you, I was saying that it surprised me they didn't happen with any the current Optimus molds since they did with both WFC Megatron molds as G2 homages, and those molds, while being tanks don't really evoke the robot mode proportions of any of the G2 Megs designs, tank chest being the most obvious example.

 

I never understood the Gun-Megatron purists. The only reason he was ever a gun was because the scope and silencer mean't they could sell his toy for a higher price than the other Deceptions... it wasn't exactly an intricate part of his character. Lorewise him turning into a handheld weapon never really made a lot of sense and what is a tank if not a giant, moving gun anyway?

 

Not connected to this figure specifically, but seeing it made me somewhat sad that the best headsculpt for this mold was done on that first green Megatron repaint where the head was done in a color where the details were lost completely.

I did the same thing with my Netflix Siege Megatron. Still wouldn't be perfect but it does pull off the shoulder cannon look somewhat decently.

 

I would rather have Earthrise Optimus turned into Earth Mode Ultra Magnus / Delta Magnus. Or just a straight Powered Convoy deco in a Brown Box (no Trailer).

I think we'd need a "scourge" style nose truck to make a nice "Hero" Optimus or "Combat Hero" Optimus or perhaps a new mould like Clench could be adapted into that.

Sort of like one can image you can sort of finagle a European G1 Stalker or Machine Wars / Universe Soundwave out of Doubledealer.

Oh and I agree Earthrise Prime would have looked better with yellow eyes for the very practical reason that his eyes are almost invisible with the colour they made them on the original release & also because they are very deep set too.

You don't always get the decos you want though - I'd still like a Primal Prime repaint of POTP Optimal Optimus for example.

 

Maybe not the exact same dance, but for me if you maneuver gun Megatron around, I could see a decent satellite cannon.

And anyway, tanks are basic. You'd think the iconic Decepticon leader would at least become an outlandishly suped-up version of a tank.

 

Megatron’s gun mode does seem odd compared to the rest of his troops, but it makes for an interesting power dynamic. In robot mode, Megatron is a ruthless tyrant who controls his subordinates through fear and aggression. In gun mode, he needs somebody else to hold and fire him to intimidate his enemies. It’s rather amusing to see somebody who constantly berates his troops for everything under the sun being forced to ask for their help when he transforms into his altmode.

 

Howitzer Megatron needs to be a thing.

Titans Return can do it perfectly, such a shame that never got the green G2 paint job.

I've got the Japanese Legends Purple Archforce version and that's fab.

Convinced Green G2 TR Megatron was destined for the cancelled Firepower boxset :-(

 

If the cropped Arcee art is any indication it looked like we were going to get Gutcruncher/Sparksmasher from that mold in one of the boxsets (would have made sense with his AM vehicle being a jet). Still hoping we get the uncropped versions of those sets artwork at some point to see what could have been.

Alt mode actually works pretty well based on these new pix, but still not feeling the 'bot mode at all... it just doesn't feel right.
