What an awesome cover by Casey Coller. I just decided I'm going to buy his covers seperately as well. The cover for #3 with Straxus is particularly awesome!

    That's... That's debatable...

I guess during the 90s when toylines died fast if it didn't catch on in a month... G2 lasted over a year... If you count them sitting in 2/$5 bins at KB Toys.

Truth is, I enjoyed G2. Really liked the jets and color changers. Also, Orange Devastator.

However, G2 will get praised, yet when Generation Selects are revealed as repaints, something which was publicized and advertised, the crowd boos in disapproval.

Most of the G1 line from 1985 were repaints ... Seekers, the Autobot cars.. ah well.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against G2, it doesn't deserve the boos or any hate and I think in a different time and place things could have been different. But, I think when it comes to the actual comic and what is remembered most fondly, the story from that short run is the thing people remember about G2 the least. They remember the crazy colors and more edgy and extreme 90's nature of it all: green and purple tank Megatron, gun toting Sideswipe, and "Not your father's Autobot!"...but the plot itself isn't particularly remarkable and is kind of only a footnote in Transformers history. I guess I'm just not sure how it's "standing the test of time" since whenever it's brought up people seem to just go "yeah, that was a thing that happened, gotta love the 90's" and the conversation usually moves on to Beast Wars or back to G1.

    G2 brought EDGE to Transformers.

    That's its legacy.

Before G2, G1 comics were mighty fine, stories well crafted some were definitely breaking new sci-fi grounds.

    But G1 was never edgy.

Not in the cartoons or the comics. UK comics were closer to have edge, but G2 made it happen.

It gave us Jhiaxus and Liege Maximo, which was a valiant effort (albeit way to brief) to have a serious menace not named Megatron or Unicron.

Can anyone name anything comparable that Dreamwave or IDW created that will have a lasting and consequential impact on TF lore in the comic realm?

War Within, the 1st run, was the biggest "bang" out of Dreamwave but it left a sour taste. To me, it robbed the purity of what the G1 characters were as we saw them on Cybertron in the 1st episode. Design wise, everybody loved Don Figueroa's design. They were cool, no doubt, but not "classic" TFs designs. Proof? These designs did not last beyond the comics.

More proof? Guido's comic designs are true to what the very first G1 comics were.

Even more proof that the pure G1 aesthetics are the best? MP-44.

    What about IDW?

Their designs are exponentially worse. They're a mish-mash of Gundam, Five star stories and every other mech series. Very "spiky" and diametrically different than classic TFs designs.

In 20-30 years, nobody will look at IDW's designs and say : WOW

So, what has Dreamwave or IDW done, in their comic run, that will have a lasting and consequential impact on TFs?

    Designs, characters, stories...

    I can't think of one.

Dreamwave was noted for bringing Transformers back to comic book form after a long hiatus.

IDW, will probably be known for "humanizing" the Autobots and Decepticons, notably in MTMTE, and establishing they can have relationships.

I'm not sure Transformers ever needed that "EDGE". Doing so always comes off as a cheap attempt to age up a comic or property for it's maturing readers, but the end result just feels lacking and is often rejected. The G2 comics were unfortunately no different.

I'm also not sure Guido drawing Marvel G1 aesthetics for a comic that is literally supposed to take place between the panels of the original Transformers #1 is proof of, well, anything. That's kind of the point of '84 to look like the comics of 1984.

And I'm really not sure that I believe in 20-30 years people will be looking at anything Transformers and saying "WOW", but I digress..

Dreamwave wasn't as note worthy because they rightfully played it safe by bringing Transformers back as the classic 80's Transformers, but that is fine. It likely would have expanded out more, though, if say the whole company didn't just collapse.

IDW will be known for expanding on just about every Transformers concept as well as creating quite a few, not just the "humanity" of MTMTE but also even being the first iteration that tried to figure out what happens next for a race of robot warriors after the 4 million year war ends.

G2 being edgy isn't really a "lasting and consequential impact" though because it's still viewed as a one off oddity in terms of tone and especially the art style. Is that G2's shtick, absolutely. But it did nothing to change the face TF comics were handled.

Does anyone know when the next hardcover volume of the Transformers ongoing is released? I had heard August, but I can't find it anywhere, and I also can't find the new date.

Man, I\'d love for this to become Arcee\'s new design, like, permanently.
