I didn’t see a thread like this around and I’m hoping something like this hasn’t been made already.

I’m aware Bumblebee is already confirmed as a reboot, but if you were the director and you could decide what it was going to be, what would you make it as? A reboot or prequel?

I mean, the Bayverse continuity is such a catastrophe that you might as well call it a prequel if you want to anyway.

For me it mostly depends on the direction they take future movies. I probably lean more towards preferring they use Bumblebee as a springboard for a new continuity, because I do think the Bay series is a bit played out at this point. Freeing future writers up to tell new stories might be best at this point. But I'm not totally against keeping it as a prequel to the Bay series if that's the route they want to go. The quality of future movies is going to depend on the talent of future filmmakers, not the continuity they're set in.

I could sort of see Bumblebee sequels taking the same approach as Bumblebee...they could work as prequels or reboots without explicitly being either. I'm sure that would tick off a lot of people who want a definitive answer (we fans like things to fit in nice neat categories), but I personally think it could be a fine approach. A lot of casual audience members still view Bumblebee as a prequel to the Bay movies, so it might be a bit confusing for them if the next movie blatantly contradicts the '07 film or something.

Νeither. The whole concept of these movies needs to be written off for a fresh start, and someone who truly understands this franchise has to step forward and make something new.

Reboot. If it were a prequel, then that means once we do get a reboot, we'd have to see Bots arrive on Earth again, the military reacting negatively towards them, yadda yadda yadda. It's played out at this point with the first Bayformers and the Bumblebee movie so we really don't need to see that for the 3rd time. By making Bumblebee a reboot, the next film can focus on the core elements of Transformers such as the battle between the Cons and Bots on Earth.

I say it can work as both.
Maybe it's split into two timelines, one where the Bayverse happened and another where a reboot universe takes place.

I also have an opinion: I don't care!

To me, it's not important what continuity a film takes place in. It's whether an enjoyable film is made.

Definitely a prequel. It so obvious that it was supposed to be a prequel (especially after watching the behind the scenes stuff), they should have just left it at that and THEN did a proper reboot in a few years.

Reboot. Its amazing that we got as much as we did with Bumblebee pulling a hard 180 mid-development to be its own thing. But the Bayverse simply couldn't keep going after it decided to go full creatively bankrupt and go full blown 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' with the whole 'ALIENS DID HUMAN HISTORY' crap.

Oh, you were getting that even if Bumblebee remained a solid prequel. Its recently been discovered that the truck used for Prime's earth mode at the end of Bumblebee was going to appear several months before the call came for the additional six months of reshoots to retool the movie.

Bayverse designs got to the point they can't even legitimately transform properly and they had to legitimize flying bullshit cubes instead. There will never be a screen accurate AoE Galvatron for this reason.

Meanwhile, all those 'baby looking box shaped garbage' designs are getting 100% accurate masterpiece figures despite being loosely based on animation from the 80s that was never meant to be truly physically replicated.

Because nothing says better quality than two robots who look like they've already had their heads put into a blender a dozen times over and have mismatched limb sizes.

Why do you need a cartoon? You got FIVE BLOCKBUSTER FILMS and over a decade of dedicated toylines.

Yeah lets see some sales numbers to support that. I doubt you actually have any proof.

Reboot. If Bumblebee were a prequel, that would mean we'd be getting a "sequel" to TLK. I do not want that travesty of a storyline to live on.

The Titan comics stopped in 2015 whereas I think its safe to say the Bayverse ended in 2017 with The Last Knight. Of course, up until the call to make Bumblebee into a reboot was made, it was still somehow going off the idea that Bumblebee has been active on Earth since WWII, and that's how you get stuff like his stint with the British Secret Service as recent as 2018, still billed as a prequel comic to the Bumblebee film (and of course no longer is canon since the BB film outright has Bumblebee arrive well past when this comic takes place).

I never understood this mentality. You aren’t forced to keep watching something you don’t like.

    Reboot.
The Bayverse did its thing and had its run - it got five huge blockbuster movies and multiple other media woven in. I want something new, and Bumblebee felt like a good place to start.

Yeah, yeah, it doesn't do the Transformium thing but I don't think that is fair to hold against it. This figure nails the seemingly impossible robot mode design and still turns into a convincing truck. That’s screen accurate.

Reboot. Aside from enjoying the universe established far more than the Bayverse, I feel that after ten years of the same type of films it was time for something new. I mean, this franchise is no stranger to frequent reboots, helping to keep things fresh.

I do see Bumblebee as a start of the reboot and I thank Travis Knight for making the film like the Bumblebee spin-off proved he could do something new with the Transformers franchise.
