So... I just finished Gundam: The Origin. And jeez, that was seven hours of my life well wasted. Sure, from the standpoint of someone who has already seen the Gundam movies for the original series, the canon is a little rocky; Amuro already knowing about the Gundam’s existence and having already researched it makes his first piloting scene seem less important. I like what they did with Ramba Ral and Char, though. I also enjoyed pretty much every scene with the Zabi family (Dozle made me laugh so fucking hard).
    Overall, 8/10.

I'm a dub guy. I can't keep up with reading the subtitles and the action at the same time. Yeah the voices might not be perfect all the time or dialogue might be a bit off in translation, but it is good enough for me.

you want a Dub >>>> Sub example, watch Ghost Stories. They took a kiddy anime and gave it a gag dub and made it awesome. Psychic girl is changed to fundamentalist christian, one kid is made jewish, the kindergartner is made unintelligble, etc. rude jokes, etc. it improved a blah series and made it a riot.

No it had the plots from the original show, just made it crazy.

Think of it like a Abridged series type show, only it is official. They went dark on some jokes.
Here is a bunch of sub vs dub from the show. Ignore the dancing musical bit. That is just the uploader's thing.

    or this

Yes this is from the official episode

Ghost Stories tanked horribly in its original broadcast so when it was picked up for dubs the original network said "Fuck it, do whatever" and that's how we got these amazing dubs

I'm not going to say there aren't some exceptions to my stance, but after listening and comparing English dubs to the original Japanese in most cases what was "good enough" no longer is... especially when the english casts are entirely indistinguishable from one another within the same show, let alone from one show to the next.

I think the "samey-ness" of many of the current English dubs comes from the fact that Funimation has such a monopoly of the industry at the moment, and between them and Sentai Filmworks, the productions are constantly drawing from the same pool of Texas-based actors. If you mix up what you watch with the Netflix or Viz or GKids licenses, then you'll start hearing from the LA and New York pools more often for a bit more variety.

And it's not like Japan doesn't have its own stable of actors in heavy rotation. I just find that because I'm not fluent in the language, I don't pick up on it quite as readily. But if I watch enough subbed Anime in sequence, I start gaining an ear for that as well.

I still think of the better dubs in recent years was Godannar, they had some liberties but they kept it going.

    *Someone interjects an insane plan*
    "What!?" "Are you on Crack!?"

"Just what do you girls think you're doing!? Cat Robots are 20 years outside of our genre!!!"

...You know I would love for a studio to do a proper live-action Gundam Series with its own Mix and spin on The UC Saga ... that maybe would look like this :

    Mobile Suit Gundam 1
    - Mobile Suit Gundam
    - Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin
    - Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team
    - Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket
    - Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory [Epilogue]

    Gundam 2
    - Zeta Gundam
    - Gundam ZZ
    - Mobile Suit Gundam Chars Counterattack
    - Gundam Unicorn
    - Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaways FLASH [Epilogue]

I'd hesitate to call Godannar's dub "recent", but it was a good one. The scriptwriters knew precisely the type of show it was and made sure tongue was planted firmly in cheek for the majority of it.

One of the dubs that impressed me the most (outside of perennial favourites like Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, and Fullmetal Alchemist) was the one for Stein's; Gate. That was a narrative built on witty, rapid-fire character banter and the ensuing cast chemistry, and the crew absolutely nailed it.

When I say they all sound the same I literally no two VAs have enough vocal distinction from one another for me to tell who is who just by listening to them. Whether or not there are a bunch of actors even in japan who cycle through various projects there are still enough distinct voices among them that I can generally tell one from another without looking at the screen. Even then if they are a lot of the same Seiyuus from a given show to the next then at least that's one more distinct voice I can recognize and enjoy compared to "Generic Teenage Boy #2048".

I could honestly say the same thing of all the overly cute Japanese schoolgirl voices if I wanted to generalize and play strawman like that.

recent for me just goes with the last decade plus, I'm that slow.

I still prefer the original 80s Guyver OAV voice cast over the ADV Standard Cast for the 2000's TV series. The problem is when the English distributor relies on the same cast members for almost every series, in nearly identical roles, and it becomes annoying.

end video by itself with correct Subs for multiple languages:

Since the video has machine translations for the auto-captions I decided to turn it on and I was not disappointed. We had Banahger, Banaghe, Banana, and now,

Agreed. Goddannar had a good dub. Another one from about the same time period that got a dub I'd consider roughly equal to the original is Kikaider: The Animation/Kikaider 01. And I liked the ingenuity of using a Texas accent to substitute for an Osaka accent in the Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi dub.

Everyone always brings up Cowboy Bebop, but I think that dub is a bit overrated. It's a decent dub for sure, but I'd stop short of calling it actually good. I think it mostly seems better than it is in comparison to other dubs of the time, and because a lot of people saw it first with the dub. I think the voice cast was well chosen, but the actual performances fall short of the original.
