Given the number of Magic Square Optimus repaints, I'm not surprised by the new metallic repaint at all. I held off on the first Soundwave and Soundblaster, so looking forward to picking up this version.

 

Not sure if people saw my painted version from an earlier post.
I used testors model master acrylic deep red pearl. It’s a near perfect dark blue match for cartoon soundwave. Just add a few drops of black to darken it.
Cheaper than buying another soundwave.

 

Huh. Who knew that having my MS Soundwave package stolen from my front porch would have a positive outcome? Ebay reimbursed me, and now I can wait for the metallic version!

 

The metallic one DOES look nicer... more in the tone of blue and the gold trim rather than the actual speckled metallic aspect. But I'm not double-dipping to upgrade, especially since I plan to also get the NewAge Soundwave (and likely Soundblaster) when they come out as well. I don't need THAT many Legends Soundwaves.

Mildly obnoxious of MS to release this so soon after the original, though.

Now, when an SG repaint gets announced, THAT will have me placing an order instantly.

 

yeah i think yours looks much better than the repaint. i would be all for a richer blue with the silver apps. but not the metallic speckled paint.

 

Can I just put it back on your porch now? I would rather the metallic version too.

we bought it thinking we had no other options, and didn't think the company would dick us around like this. it was already a shiate move to begin with how they packaged things. didn't think they would take it to another level. and no i wasn't very happy with my purchase, and less so now.  

and to answer your other question, yes i'm mad.

If anyone thought there weren’t going to be three or four variations of this Soundwave with multiple cassette accessories, they haven’t been paying attention to this hobby for 30+ years.

 

I think every company is trying to get the most out of their molds.

Didn't MFT released the toon Astrotrain first, followed by the B&W one, then finally the toy one (slightly re-molded)?

I bet some (many?) would have waited for the toy one if they knew. But guess what? The company doesn't want you to know.  

This is the 'early tax'.  

And the ironic thing about the metallic version is that if everyone waited for it, there wouldn't be one...

Maybe their next release would be, due to popular feedback, matte deep blue.  

(And watch all those who bought metallic deep blue go bananas.)

 

yeah...i dont know how anyone would actually think that MS wasnt going to drop a repaint almost instantly. just look at their legends prime and the 7 bots they have or whatever. it is just part of the game.

for 35 bucks i am happy with my purchase. i feel like i got my moneys worth. there is no better SW out there now and for a long time coming in the legends space. i even got lucky and scored a sweet deal on the black version. which is what i wanted anyways.

 

Not true. Of course there were going to be a few versions, nobody is denying that, the way they handled them is the issue. if you paid attention to the 2 legends Soundwave that've been on mostly everybody's shelf since 2017:

Dx9 SW incl. laser, ratbat, ravage.
DX9 SB repaint incl. buzzsaw, ratbat, ravage.
Hot Soldiers SW + laserbeak
HS repaint SB + ratbat.
Clear version with buzzsaw
Con re-release of the original SW but with teal and orange versions of ratbat and laserbeak.

With the MS version, Soundwave with Rumble, then force people into SB for laserbeak, then SW with Laserbeak, like wtf. It would've been an easier pill to swallow if they had packed new Soundwave with the same tapes they had packed with first Soundwave.

The last 2 legends Soundwave prove that, so no, I'm not brushing this off this as normal release methods for TFs across the board the past 30 years.

The difference is MFT announced that toy version Astrotrain 2 weeks after release, MS announced this 2 months later. Why? to cash grab on fans to buy out the 1st release. then make more money with an "accurate" color repaint.

Not taking their feedback excuse as a good reason. You're telling me a company that focuses on making transformers, day and night, for a few years now didn't know the correct color of arguably one the top 5 transformers in history? And if it truly was a mistake, the person that handled SW should be fired.

Not sure why you're defending them so hard. Do you even have a full team of casettes? If you did you'd know how hard it sucked to accomplish that, and some ppl feel suckered by MS. And don't believe everything you read.

After seeing that correct color soundwave I'm starting to question the practices of this company. Wondering if the length of time and recent improvements to the stunticons with the same "feedback" excuse so they could get it right for the fans is truth... (as opposed to the reality of not being able to get them produced for soo long that they were forced to improve them because the designers and technology has improved in legends over that 2 years time.. But anyone who thinks this SW marketing wasn't a cash grab on fans can keep drinking the koolaid though.

 

Look, I agree that it sucks that they bundled Laserbeak with Soundblaster instead of including him with the tape set or with Soundwave. But that's about as far as I agree with you. I hated Hot Soldiers' business model and I hated that I only had their Laserbeak and Ravage because I wasn't willing to buy repaints to get Ratbat and Buzzsaw. I also hated having to buy MST Soundblaster to get Laserbeak but I made the decision to do so and that's on me for being a sucker. I'm actually pretty grateful that only one of their tapes was bundled poorly, unlike Hot Soldiers. As far as I can see, MST made Soundwave the shade of blue they did purely as an artistic choice and I was fine with his color. I thought he looked a little bright in some photos but in hand I was pretty happy with him. Am I happy to have paid as much for legends Soundwave plus a full collection of tapes as I did for MP Soundwave plus a full collection of tapes (minus Ratbat) back in 2012 (or whatever year he came to tru)? No, but it was my decision to buy in because I wanted the figures badly enough.

As for the metallic release, I'm surprised at the amount of complaining. They listened to fan feedback and created a version to satisfy their customers' requests. They even took the opportunity to include Laserbeak for all those fans who wanted him but didn't want to buy Soundblaster to get him. That's a good thing! Does it make me regret buying Soundblaster? Yeah, a little, but that was my decision and I obviously considered it worth the money at the time even if I wasn't thrilled about it. Given that Laserbeak is being included as a pre-order bonus with the metallic, I'm guessing it wasn't the plan from the get to to include him (assuming they were planning a metallic release all along, which they very well may not have been) and they're doing it as a favor for those who didn't want to buy Soundblaster. I'm curious, if you had decided to skip Soundblaster, would you still be this upset or would you be praising them for giving you another chance at Laserbeak?

 

if that's what they are actually doing, sure. but from the get go, ms made customers jump through hoops to try and get core cassettes to go with soundwave. which many feel are as equally as important as soundwave. you had to buy two decos and then a cassette pack to do it. also the uncertainty of getting the decal sheet with preorder, important to some and is the incentive of preorder. sure companies want to try to maximize profits and can sell in whatever fashion they please. and no one here is going to deny ms was going to release all types of repaints to milk this mold, just like their prime. it's the blatant handling of the cassettes and manor of preorder bonus that has ticked ppl off. not the repaint.

if ms had made it mandatory to buy a trailer for each and every one of their prime redeco at full pop, just because they could, many ppl would be equally be pissed at the situation, or even more so. or better yet, left the trailer off the original prime release, and included just the trailer with one of the lesser popular deco, and then roller on another random repaint, and then the combat deck with yet another. and just to make things fun, they then release metallic prime shortly after with the complete trailer with roller and combat deck. okay scratch that, maybe we just leave out roller on the metallic and include it with the first 500 preorders.  

just because a company can do things to maximize profit, doesn't mean they should and piss off the people who buy their products.
