pictures aren’t the same size it also looks like the face isn’t attached all the way making it look like his brow is lower. Plus his cheeks are painted on the con version to make it look different. Autobot megatron does have the brow but the helmet does hide it.

Where has flame toys ever said “retooled face”? It’s the articles that started with saying “looks like a new face!” And everyone says “holy crap it’s a new face!”

 

Are you serious, dude? The face is attached all the way. If it wasn't the chin wouldn't be at the same level. You can also see that the brow is closer to the nose tip on the new face, and the eyes are clearly different shapes.

You're unbelievable. I know you know it's new but you just won't give up. What are you going to do once the actual kit is released and people show the new and old faces side-by-side?

Except I have proven to you it's not the angle. Angles do not change the sculpt, you're just ignoring the blatant truth.

 

This Facebook link mentions noticing the difference in the face. Whether it's sculpt or paint, I would imagine they wouldn't point it out if it's just paint, since I believe the face isn't painted on the model (I have the Autobot one but haven't put it together yet).

They have no problems using high quality painted models in all their promos only to everyone to buy them and once you get them you “why is this piece red? It’s suppose to be grey?” Why is this part grey when it’s clearly black plastic in the photo?”

This is what I mean. Optimus‘s iconic black rifle. Still gonna have fun building! Only half the steps as megatron and Drift. They should released this guy first to introduce the line since he’s gonna be way easier to assemble only has 6 stickers. 4 top lights and 2 Autobot logos

 

I found out about this a while ago but thank you for making it clearer. This makes a lot more sense than Flame Toys just giving out a new sticker.

 

I’m honestly not the most thrilled with him once he’s done. He’s way too thin and anime looking.



Side note: that’s a toyhax cartoon symbol. I really try to avoid using flame toys stickers

 

I just cracked open Drift, he looks like he's got more pieces than Megs.

I've got G1 OP on the way, but from your review I might just look to sell it

 

drift took a long time and I wasn’t happy with how he turned out but on my part. He comes with the same pieces but different colored so that was confusing. Parts of his arms back and legs come in white and grey so that was very confusing. I tried to paint the intended gold parts but painting these are so difficult because metallic paint gets so runny so I gave up and used the stickers for gold parts. I messed up painting the red too in spots. Just turned into a figure I didn’t wanna show anyone.

Optimus was actually really easy and quick to put together. Not too many panel lines to paint which was good but his inner chest detail I had problems assembling. It’s not a bad figure but you can’t get around the crotch thrust. I tried up and down to minimize it but the way he’s assembled it’s unavoidable to an extent. Not a feature that bothers me like some but he does look likes he’s sporting a diaper. All in all it’s not a bad kit, it’s just too anime and thin for me to see it as a definitive representation of G1 optimus and I hate that rifle. I’m tired of them showing off their stuff that doesn’t represent what you’re getting but this is my last kit. Not because I’m not happy with them in general but none of the upcoming one I’m interested in. Maybe if they do Shockwave or G1 Megatron and look good. Just not an anime fan so the style isn’t my cup of tea



I tried to paint the red accents in drifts sword sheathes with tape and a gundam marker but it just kept bleeding everywhere.

 

Masking tends not to work when hand-painting, because capillary action draws the paint under the tape. It only really works when spraying/airbrushing, when you're actually putting down so sparingly little paint that there's no excess to draw anywhere.

 

I think both look nice. The cartoon based Optimus doesn't interest me (neither does the first model they released of him - I got the IDW one). If they did Toxitron from the G1 Optimus, I'd buy it.

I have most but still need to get Devastator.

 

yeah I thought about that gundam marker air spray kit. Heard it’s great for casuals but I don’t know if I’d use it much.

Thanks. I really tried but I get impatient when it comes to second and third coats. Doesn’t help these really aren’t intended to be painted. It’s an option sure but the plastic is very shiny which causes running. I tried to clean up as much as possible. I grew up with a model maker dad so while this isn’t my passion it’s a fun nostalgia trip to make these

 

Wife purchased this for me as a gift! I’m usually all about fully painting my kits but for this one I just hit a few key areas with some silver and proceeded with the build.

I’m pretty happy with the kit. I think he feels a bit more sturdy than the IDW prime, looks good with minimal paint and was a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon since he only takes a couple hours to build.

 

I'd love to see Akira Amemiya takes on on the Cons, like Megs, Galvatron, Shockwave. IDW megs is nice though, so he's bottom of the list. Drift is next on my to do list

I'm a little nervous of the inevitable masking I'm gonna need to do on TC for seeker perfection. Drift's little red fins will be good practice though.

 

This is why I ultimately decided to pass on the G1 kit and look for the IDW Prime set. His lower body, arms, and head all look fine and I don't mind slight anime styling but his torso does look a bit too thin compared to the rest of his body.

Speaking of IDW Prime, he and Autobot Megatron have been fun builds. I have Skywarp coming in next week but at the moment I have Drift at home that I have yet to crack open. I might start on him this afternoon since I might have a bit more free time.

 

the chest on G1 prime is just too thin and small. Anyone who love it more power to ya. I won’t say you’re wrong for liking something but for me he just looks weird. I loved making IDW Prime but I did too much on him and he looks kinda bad. My fault. IDW megatron is my favorite I’ve worked on. I honestly considered the Decepticon one or a second autobot megatron just because I had so much enjoyment building him but I realized how foolish that would be.
