'Sandman' TV Series From Neil Gaiman, David Goyer — With Huge Price Tag — a Go at Netflix Slightly apprehensive about David Goyer's involvement, but Neil Gaiman is overseeing it so I trust him. Sandman is more important to him than American Gods.
I like Goyer to an extent, but with Gaiman involved I have faith. I have been recently re-reading the complete Sandman run via the Absolute editions, so this news is very pleasing.
If it's not too much to hope for, bring in Henderson Wade's Matt Cable from DCU's Swamp Thing and Tom Ellis' Lucifer into this universe.
This could work. I always thought that the story was too big for a movie, but a series could do it justice.
so, wait.. DC just launched their own streaming service but they're letting Netflix have Sandman? What gives?
Yeah, that was exactly my first thought. Maybe Netflix is fronting the money to make it, like they did the first season of Star Trek Discovery, and that's why they're getting it. But... it could also be another sign that DC's streaming service has tanked and is already on the way out.
SANDMAN Writer Neil Gaiman Updates On Netflix Adaptation; Teases Major Changes To The Comic SANDMAN Character Breakdowns Suggest Some Big Changes To Neil Gaiman's Comic Series Neil Gaiman now seems to have confirmed that the Netflix show will update the story and characters for the 21st century. "Okay, it is 2020, let's say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?" Gaiman also touched on why so many previous attempts to adapt his classic tale never came to fruition. "People have tried making movies and TV adaptations for 30 years, and actively tried making them for 25 years, and they've never worked," the writer continued. "And they never worked because of all the special effects and what would be needed to do the special effects. They never worked because you were making something that was adult. People would write Sandman movie scripts, and they go, 'But it's an R-rated movie, and we can't have $100 million R-rated movies.' So, that wouldn't happen. You needed to get to a world in which long-form storytelling is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. And the fact that we have seventy-five issues of Sandman plus -- essentially, 13 full books -- worth of material, is a really good thing. It's not a drawback." Gaiman went on to reveal that he's seen some of the production designs for Lucifer's castle and the gates of Hell, and wishes he could show everyone how well everything is coming together.
On March 4, 2020, it was announced that Audible would be adapting Gaiman's acclaimed comic book series into a multi-part audio drama to be directed by Dirk Maggs and with music by James Hannigan. On May 13, 2020, the voice cast was announced: - James McAvoy as Dream - Kat Dennings as Death - Taron Egerton as John Constantine - Michael Sheen as Lucifer - Riz Ahmed as The Corinthian - Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven - Samantha Morton as Urania Blackwell, - Bebe Neuwirth as The Siamese Cat - and finally Gaiman himself as The Narrator. The audio drama is set to debut on July 15, 2020. Trailers for the audio drama adaptation of the novel.
“massive financial deal....sources familiar with the pact note it is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.”
Ah Neil Gaiman, one of the most overrated authors of the modern era. The concept of feeling the need to '''''update'''''' his characters because current year is so painfully stupid in and of itself, but I'd expect nothing less from that flaccid, scraggly muppet.
Netflix's The Sandman Is Set in 2021 Neil Gaiman has confirmed that the series will take place in the upcoming year of 2021. According to Gaiman, this update will actually not affect the origin story of Dream of the Endless, aka Morpheus. In the original Sandman comics, Morpheus was imprisoned by the Order of Ancient Mysteries in the year 1916, finally escaping seven decades later in 1988 (i.e. around the time the comic itself was first published). In the Netflix adaptation, Morpheus will apparently still be captured in 1916, though this time he will remain confined for an additional three decades, or just over a century in total. "The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years."
