I read the comic this was based on. It was short, but had decent characters. Spoiler Basically, these soldiers are just immortal. They can't pass on their ability, they don't know why/how they stay alive, and they're just roaming around without any real purpose, and having lost all their loved ones to bitterness or death. They're all so depressed about it that one of their own sells them out to see if they can be killed at all (they can't - the traitor can't be killed either, so gets sentenced to isolation for 100 years). This looks somewhat generic unfortunately.
Watched it last night thought it was pretty good actually. Dragged on a little at the end but overall it's definitely worth seeing.
...I must say it's not that bad of a film as far as graphic novel films go. And seeing as this is the 1st in a series of films theirs room for improvement and growth for the writing and characters.
Why didn't they make this an 8 or 10 episode series? The movie seemed like a 2hr series of a 10 hr series. Could have had a good back story for each character.
Reading Andromache's backstory made me facepalm near to the suicidal levels. Not interested. When you're correctly acknowledging that amazons are from the Scythian cultural area as it was, then stop giving them Greek names. Or anything Greek in their backstory, idiot writers. As for the story... It's the Highlander knock-off except no cool sword fights to justify lack of substance.
The director says they are working on a script for the next movie and eventually become a trilogy, two hurdles that could affect the the movie from getting a sequel is covid 19, and the other hurdle is that Netflix rarely gives a green light for a sequel for a movie.
"I had a good time with this movie, no alcohol required." Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 82% - "The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre - and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron." Metacritic Score: 70 out of 100
What I don't get is when she loses her powers why didn't she pick up a bulletproof vest lying around everywhere from the downed guards since obviously she wants to continue living?
Because after living such a long life if it's her time to die she accepts it, without changing how she fights.
I understand she wants to die however it happens, but this isn't ancient times where she fights with hand held weapons. Enemies are using automatic weapons and her team can't always block those for her...ofcourse I don't know how the comics go.
