They can keep it. Fifty bucks seems too much for it anything supporting Tom Cruise.

 

So many thoughts....

1) Is that camo or dirt on plane?

2) Is that cheap-o gray plastic or proper silver?

3) Why is the face so uninspiring?

4) Can he have just a volleyball and no guns?   I don't want this toy to be too violent!  

5) Robot mode reminds me of G2 Jet TFs...

Except how this G2 is better: paint looks nicer, face is cooler, and has a missile launcher.

Top Gun TF is a step backwards, imo.

 

This...OMG that has got to be one of the ugliest transformers produced by Hasbro in...close to ever? Kudos to all who want this and see the good in it, honestly that's what makes this hobby great, but yeah that is not even worth $25 let alone $50. Yuck

 

Gonna be honest, I'm buying this entirely for the crossover novelty and the hope it leads to future crossover releases, but on it's own metrics, it looks like a complete PoS to me in both modes. Honestly, it looks like whoever made SS helicopter Dropkick designed this and was told to save as much material cost as possible.

 

Jet mode is gonna be fantastic, and sadly that's the exact reason that the bot mode sucks so bad. They wanted to keep a clean and slick underbelly for the jet, which I definitely like, but at the expense of the bot mode. The way his legs look like one solid piece when his knee is straight is just a bad look. And the color is painfully boring. I get that's how jets look, but his bot mode really need some touches of an alternate color here and there. If they had built this in a darker or cooler gray so the plastic didn't look cheap and had accents of blue throughout the bot mode along with the helmet, I think he'd look a lot better. Also forearm panels to cover that gap would have been nice

This looks like the first crossover to be an entirely new mold and I think it suffers because of it. While the other two put their budget into making an already existing mold cooler, this one spent most of it's budget designing a whole new figure and ended up falling short in every area

 

If I can match the scale I'd have to see if I can get some aircraft water slides for him, he's a bit missing in the decoration department. Likely would need some hinge- hatch covers for the fore arms & some Missiles and the like too.

Seems "ok" though - nothing especially spectacular but perfectly servicable overall.

 

I’m not thrilled with translucent tan plastic they used as this should be grey.

 

Limit 1 per customer feels pretty optimistic. This looks like an Aaron Archer era design they brought back from the dead, definitely not a 2020 level design.

I was also wondering if this is a retool of that and Hasbro used Takara's black magic on it.

Topspin has been announced for months now, since Toy Fair this past February.

 

It's at least the right type of F-14, but it looks so much worse than I imagined from the leaked pic---it's splattered all over with BROWN?!?!? Did they take it out mudding? It's a Navy jet. They get graphite streaks and salt stains. Black and white. That's their weathering. Black grime (usually lube-leaks), fading paint. Brown is practically unheard of, and "splattered all over in tiny dots" is totally not how it happens. It looks TERRIBLE.

It's like putting rust on a diamond, to show that it's old---that's not what happens.

It'd look a lot better, if it was a decently "deep" shade of cool grey (i.e., the correct main color)----this is like 1 step away from "milky translucent white" that Hastak loves lately.

(yes, this is Iceman's plane, but there's surprisingly few good pics of Maverick's----all the photoshoots seem to have been with Iceman) But (real-world, not movie) Maverick and Iceman's planes came from the same carrier at the same time, so are nigh-identical paint-wise.

 

The helmet's maybe a little on the nose, but the volleyball is Ah-May-Zing!

dig most of the robot mode, the hollow forearms are kind of janky, and not loving the scale of the "wing cape" - would have been nice if those could fold back upwards similarly to how Commander Jetfire's wings fold over.
The shoulders are a tad low too.
really appreciate they gave him the folding nosecone so he doesn't end up with with unfortunate "robowang" a lot of JEtformers with this transformation scheme inevitably end up with  

The alt mode looks really great, my only major complaint is those molded rockets are really cheesy looking and it would have been nice if they weathered the underside of the wings.

overall though, I think he might be my favorite of the 3 so far.

now get me my Skystriker repaint, dammit!

Wow. Any amount of hype that I had for this went straight out the window once I saw the bot mode. It looks like the figure is made out of cheap plastic and it’s just so...lanky. Props to those who want this. This looks terrible and it’s not worth the amount of money they’re asking for.

Definitely not the best of the bunch but I'm still excited for this!

Supposed to be dirt. Carrier planes get pretty goddamn dirty as a result of the sea air.

While the plastic color isn't the best, silver would be the furthest thing away from what the Tomcat would actually be painted in.

Yes, but when he appears in TLK he has Leadfoot’s head. I guess if SS Leadfoot and Topspin can swap heads that’d do.

 

Hear me out

 

Okay...

Pros:
- I really dig the chest design. It's a cool twist on the traditional Seeker chest design with the fuselage and canopy. It's that folded piece on the upper chest that gives it a nice, distinctive look.
- Cool overall silhouette on the robot mode.
- I dig the thin legs. It gives him an athletic visual in contrast to the chunky legs on the Seekers. This guy is more about speed and precision, versus brute force of the typical Seeker design.
- Jet mode looks like the jet!

Cons:
- Price. I would bite at $30 but I know that's too low.
- Gappy forearms. Shoulda used a higher parts count to hide this.
- The wings in robot mode give him an insect-like visual. I have mixed feelings on this. It would be a great compromise if you could fold them further towards the center of the body to hide them better.

Conclusion:
Great for Top Gun fans, so-so for TF fans. I think I'd pick this up as a repaint with some "traditional" TF color scheme, a different head sculpt and lower price point.
