Language aside, how different is Robots in Disguise from Car Robots?

I would say the differences come from the connections to Takara made to link CR with RID

Car Robots takes place int the G1 continuity. Fire Convoy and the others come from the distant future, in the Beast era, and time travel back in time to when G1 Season 3 happened.

This is the timeline of Japanese G1 continuity: Generation 1 cartoon timeline (Japan) - Transformers Wiki
    2000
    [IMG]
    • An elite team of Predacons, called "Destrongers", from the future cross the dimensions to Earth. They attempt to control Brave Maximus, who was left on Earth several million years before. They are opposed by an Autobot Dimensional Patrol Team from the future, led by Fire Convoy. The Autobots secretly construct a space bridge and remain undercover. The Dimensional Patrol Team is made up of new-generation Transformers, including the Spy Changers, who were born from the addition of the Go-Bots.
    • The Autobot space ship that had crashed on Angel Mountain several millennia ago is unearthed by the Predacons. Its crew are reformatted into Decepticons.
    • The Autobots activate Brave Maximus. Borrowing Maximus's power, Fire Convoy defeats the leader of the Predacons and Decepticons, Devil Gigatron.
    In short:
In Car Robots, the main good guy is Fire Convoy. He leads a group named ''Autobot Dimensional Patrol Team''.
The main bad guy is Gigatron. He is the leader of a group named "Destrongers". They are a sub-group of Beast Wars Predacons

Only I don't believe any of that was ever actually referenced in the show. CR is part of G1 because basically everything is somehow part of G1 in Japan. RiD is its own thing, even if the writers DID drop a metric ton of G1 references into the dub.

It was retconned in during the train wreck that was Binaltech/Kiss Players. Yet another reason I detest retcons.

Not to me.too many plot holes and inconsistencies.
And recently i've also erased season 3 of the cartoon from my head continuity. It erases and changes way to much from the first 2 seasons and the '86 movie. Plus, well, except for a fragile few episodes, seasons 3 and the headmasters mini series were terrible.

Also, WFC and FOC have stuff that contradict the original cartoon.

But when has G1 NOT contradicted itself.

    This error is funny :D

Even if WFC/FoC is not prequel to G1 cartoon, is clearly a G1 reboot.

Not really. Sure, the characters look somewhat like G1, but that's true to varying degrees of most/all TF franchises. High Moon claimed they were sticking to the G1 mythology, but then contradicted it at every turn. I'm sorry, but "authorial intent" is worth nothing if the product doesn't reflect that intent. Apart from character design and casting Peter Cullen as Prime, the games are no more G1 than any other franchise.

Meanwhile, there are elements in the games which explicitly tie them to Prime, which follows the official word from Hasbro. Dark Energon was never used in G1, but is a major plot element in both the games and Prime. Cliffjumper in FOC has his Prime head design. Trypticon is remade into the Nemesis. G1 Bumblebee is not mute, but in FOC Bee is rendered unable to speak. Yes, most of these elements were added at the request of Hasbro, but they are still present, and Hasbro is still the final word on Transformers.

While the fit between the games and Prime is worlds away from perfect, it's basically nonexistent between the games and G1, apart from the character designs.

WFC/FoC are its own thing. Even in regards to "the aligned continuity".

Well, Dark Energon history is different in TFP. ''What? Dark Energon? I thought it was a legend! That thing belongs to Unicron the Chaos Bringer, right?''
But in One Shall Rise, Part 3, While Ratchet says ''poisoning the planet to its core'', the flashback shows Dark Energon. I think this is a retcon. But this can't retcon the entire story of Darkness Rising episodes.

Hmm.. Actually this element is from Transformers: Exodus novel. TFP Nemesis is Trypticon? Even it is, Decepticons don't know this. Haha :D

Well, yes, Hasbro is final word, but... I'm tired of Hasbro's words. Example: ''WFC game and Exodus novel are the same continuity'' and ''WFC Megatron respects Optimus''

No. Umm, the f'n Dinobots are already on Cybertron, were already there as an elite black ops Autobot team that were captured and then redesigned by Shockwave and turned into Dinobots!

Also, Starscream betrays Megatron and they are bitter enemies by the end of Fall of Cybertron. Plus, did you note how the game actually f'n ends?

The two games clearly took heavy inspiration to present a G1-inspired evocative of the story, but they clearly reinterpreted and told it their own way.

Also, you can't expect me to buy that Fall of Cybertron is a prequel to Prime either the way certain characters end up and the way certain relationships/plot issues are never resolved or addressed again.

I don't think that WFC/FoC Megatron can ever forgive Starscream. He hates traitors (his old librarian buddy) so much. Megatron is even ruthless against his men.

    I don't. I can't.

I created this topic because there are many inconsistencies even in G1 cartoon itself.

Except G1 animated series begins with the bots still on Cybertron. Fall of Cybertron ends with Autobots and Decepticons going to all out war with each other with the Ark and the Nemesis and then they get sucked into a space bridge presumably to prehistoric earth.

Oh, did I forget to mention that Trypticon died and became the Nemesis. That too.

Everything that ties WFC to Prime does so ONLY due to shit novels jumping through hoops to make it connect.

    Squint test, remember?

The links to FOC exist because HMS were directed to "align" with the other existing fiction. Get it? Aligned? HMS were the only ones who compromised their product to capitulate and it shows with how mismatched it is with the larger continuity. Looking at later TFP episodes it's indicative that the Prime writers were actively working to contradict HMS' work.

Swallow the corporate synergy fluff speak all you want, the games fit the Aligned universe FAR worse than they do as a G1 continuity family prequel.

Oh, and for all of you... posters who keep defaulting to Sunbow for your counterargument, please look up the concept of continuity family. Marvel and Sunbow have conflicting Dinobot origins and they were running simultaneously.

You mean Exodus, Exiles and Retribution novels? Cybertron games even contradict these novels.

    Exactly

I mean I guess anything could count as anything if you do enough mental gymnastics.

Hasbro was seemingly wanting it to serve as a prequel to the Aligned continuity but the showrunners and writers of Transformers Prime were incredibly difficult and frustrating to work with. Whereas High Moon studios was very accommodating and even sprinkled some Prime references into FOC, even giving Cliffjumper's head a make-over.
