I must be lying to myself then, I was under the impression the point of the line was 6 inch action figure line inspired by Transformers series of old. Sure there is a 'slavish' element to the deco and sculpt of these first 3 but not so much the proportions. I'm sure you are right that the Soundwave deco is a mistake... personally i think it looks fine... preferable even. I know it's a stretch to see it as anything other than that but I do hold out hope they won't maintain silly levels of adherence to the animation models a la Masterpiece.

Oh well it appears I'm being overly optimistic for a change... more of the same then.

    It's really rather silly.

Hasbro: Here's some 6-inch non-transforming G1 figures that look a lot like the cartoon you remember.

    Fandom: Yay!

Guy in the back: Hey, there aren't white rectangles on Soundwave's legs!

"Inspired?" Is that what you call Megatron and Optimus who look like they walked right off 80's tv screens?

I guess I just don't see the point of half-measures when it's such a niche line to begin with. Why do a G1 cartoon accurate line of figures and then not make them accurate? When then do they offer that, say, transforming figures with inaccuracies do? Especially since it's clearly ignorance on Hasbro's part that lead to the mistake, not a deliberate attempt to update or diversify the designs with modern aesthetics. It's a mistake.

Soundwave's legs are meant to be almost entirely white, being the white sections of his tapedeck mode. It's not a small paint app error, they're moulded in the wrong colour. Again, it's like if Optimus' lower legs were red.

Yup. I guess what I'm saying yes there's plenty of screen accuracy here but I've seen no mention of it being the 'mission statement' of the line (sorry if I too you took literally). What I understood it to be is a 6 inch Transformers action figure line with representations of various characters from across the franchise (sadly with your usual bias towards G1 and the Sunbow aesthetic). This would obviously include a lot of show accuracy but wouldn't be the "the entire point of the line"... but what do I know? Clearly I'm being a bit thick!

I honestly had not noticed until it was pointed out and once it was my reaction was... meh... I hadnt noticed... it still looks great, it still looks like Soundwave... I'm in.

I guess the inner calf should be white...but still, who cares about that? Buy a mailing label sheet. Cut to shape. Done.

Yeah, I've never really noticed how awful the inner white looks on the animation model. It's like I blotted that out in my mind.

I very much feel like for a some of us who grew up with G1 (myself included) there's an idealised version of these characters in our minds and they rarely match the animation models. Especially if the context in which you enjoyed Transformers wasn't just predominantly though the TV show. My image of these characters is a hotchpotch of stuff from the cartoon, comics, books, boxart and direct contact with the original G1 figures at the time. I got use to them not all matching the show and to be honest preferred it. However I do wonder if people like me are in a minority now.... maybe we always have been.

That was Hasui's stated philosophy when designing MP figures: how we always imagined/wanted the characters to look.

"I believe MPs are meant to be the embodiment of that image. Neither making the cartoon version into a three dimensional form nor making it as realistic as possible is a good idea. The important thing for me has been to create a MP product through which you can meet yourself from the past, in which you can find a toy you have been dreaming of."

(Then Hasui left, and the MP line shifted towards its current trend of slavish toon accuracy instead.)

I also prefer the blue legs, it’s how I remember from the cartoon.

I for one am super disappointed that they got the leg colors on Soundwave wrong. It's disappointing that they got so close to show accurate and then have such a glaring deviation from it.

A lot of people don't have the skill and/or equipment to paint and customize their figures and they shouldn't have to.

Hasbro dropped the ball here, plain and simple.

Hasbro hasn't done Sentinel sized Build A Figures. Those were Toybiz. Bulkhead is about as big as a Hasbro BAF gets.

It would literally take around 20 Hasbro BAFs worth of plastic to make a Devastator remotely in scale. It would be a lot better if they just sold the damned thing for $80-90 than have us hunting 20 figures just to end up with cranes and shovels that will never stay on.

IMHO, a realistic BAF is something like Grimlock over 6 parts or maybe Autobot X or Ultra Magnus.

Just like Hot Rod, I'm a big Soundwave fan. He's been my favorite character since 1984. Still one of my best Christmases ever was getting that toy under the tree.

G1 Soundwave was pretty much perfection at the time.

Several years later as the TF brand died in the US, I got the Action Master. I liked that it incorporated both toon and toy aesthetics. I like it for what it is and I still have it tucked away somewhere.

Then a long drought, and a teeny tiny toy came out of Japan in the SCF line that lost all the toy influences and went straight toon. A shame it was so small and unposeable.

Again, fast forward a few years and we'd get the best Soundwave toy of all time. MP Soundwave is mostly toon inspired but still several vintage G1 details. I know now that Starscream v3 is coming, a new Soundwave can't be far behind, but I can't see myself going for an MP with no surface detail. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it...HASUI FOREVER!!

This year Super7 released their retro action figure. I passed. Just too bland, and clearly there's better stuff out there. But again...this one's all toon. A bigger version of the SCF with less detail and worse pose.

And that brings us to RED. I think this is what the eventual new MP will look like, but it'll transform.

I actually like this, the more I look at it. Got it pre-ordered. It looks 100% toon, but bigger and more fully poseable than the SCF from nearly 20 years ago.

It'll do. There's just ONE thing I'm gonna do when I get it.....I'm gonna paint the dots inside his shoulder cannon red to match the MP.

I'd have shat my pants and bought every single one of these back in 2000, 2001 or so. This is everything I wanted the SCF to be, not little tiny unposeable rubber figures. But at this point....I just have too many. And as lovely as Megatron looks....I have the MP and that one's bigger and transforms. Gonna restrict this line to my utter absolute favorites, like Soundwave here and Hot Rod/Rodimus.

And maybe Prowl, if/when he's announced.

Thanks for taking us down G1 Soundwave toy memory lane! Just to add to your sentiments, I hope that Hasbro adds that missile paint for us. I also hope that they paint the red stripes on the shoulder cannon and the shins white/gray.

I feel this whole post big time - ever since I was a kid picking up the scant remnants of Action Masters during the early days of G2, I'd always loved toon accuracy and didn't mind a bit if my Transformers didn't actually transform so long as they were fun. SCF was my way to pretend like I had toys like Ginrai or Overlord that I'd only ever known about thanks to the internet in the late 90s, and R.E.D. reminds me a lot of that same vibe I'd get from SCF or Robotmasters or whatever. I don't see myself buying a ton of these, but I will absolutely love the few I buy, and I'm glad Hasbro isn't shying away from this sort of thing.

That's right, I forgot it was Toy Biz. Looking back, that's a bit too big, I was meaning something big and in scale with the other figures. 6 separate BAF Constructicons pieces to form Devastor. I could see it happening.
