For people upset that the character designs look like the toys, isn't that the point? The show is to sell the toys, which it can't do if they don't look like the toys.

Also, given how many around these parts absolutely lose their minds when the toys aren't accurate to the original character models....I don't blame them for doing the reverse. It's the only way to make sure you don't animate anything you can't engineer in a toy.

The alternative is the toys aren't accurate to the show model, which I thought was Bad(TM) now.

I give a definite meh. That animation is very stiff, reminds me of the Netflix Godzilla anime that I absolutely hated.

Glad they vocoded the hell out of Optimus's character to the point where I can't make out the VA's cringey attempt at an Optimus impression. That said he still lacks the depth of Peter Cullen and no amount of vocoding can make up for that. But seriously, wtf is with Shockwave's voice? He sounds like an impression of Bayverse Starscream.

all the footage so far is revealed to be an adult collector envisioning a dark mature storyline with his figures. The actual show kicks in gear once his child gets a hold of the toys and imagines a quirky, fun adventure with them.

It is gross and awful that you are right. I feel like the movies kinda fucked up people's perception of detail, because the UT had some really wonderfully detailed designs with lots of character and cool mecha-ness.

These WFC models looks like bland first drafts.

Looking like the toys and being literal recreations of them down to peg holes, hollow spaces, and pinned hinges is not the same thing.

Yeesh. It looks like it could be good but I can't stand the voices. Everyone sounds the same.

But does is have to be dark and gritty? I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with making this story dark and gritty. But we've seen that approach done many, many times. I mean, basically every telling of the War for Cybertron story has been dark, gritty, and serious. The High Moon games did that very well. Why not just replay those if you want to see the dark/gritty approach again? At this point why not find a different way of telling this story? Heck, tell it as a comedy or an adventure romp. Obviously war is going to be a big aspect, but that doesn't mean every telling of this story has to be overly serious and gritty. A New Hope is a war story, and it's a very funny movie. Couldn't they do that with Transformers too?

And I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying the dark/gritty approach. I just think the whole "it has to be dark and gritty because it's a war" mentality is very limiting. I think it's that line of thinking that leads to us getting stuff like this over and over again. Just because this is the most obvious way to tell this story doesn't mean it's the only way to tell it. At this point I would welcome a different approach.

Yes. This, all of this. It bothers me that some of these models, down to 5mm pegs in some shots, are literally the toys being animated, even with their weird, toy limited proportions. I don't know why that was done, it wasn't necessary.
It's funny because at least from the trailers, the one detail that does diverge from this and it's "artistic", and everyone seems to complain about, are Megatron's lips lol

I wonder if they somehow are built their stuff quickly using some type of import of Hasbro's 3d models/mockups

I was thinking it would be neat to end the show with a live-action segment of the Autobots explaining the war to Spike/Sam Witwicky (not necessarily played by Shia or set in the movieverse). They could be using the toys to demonstrate the events of the war. Something like that would be really fun. I mean, I highly doubt that will happen, but it would be neat.

That sword sound effect at the end, and megatron's toy sword, do not gel at all.

Don't use the CAD files for your super serious animation, because all I can see is a toy sword. There's no chance of tension when I could recreate the damn thing perfectly by going into my cupboard and getting out my Siege Megatron.

Also, stop with the voice imitators, and let the voice actors act.

Smacks of cynical cribbing from Castlevania "because Castlevania's hot, right? Let's do the Dracula stakes thing!" Meanwhile the equally harrowing established canonical horrorific visual representation of the Decepticons' evil of the Smelting Pool/s bubbles away quietly ignored.

I don't disagree to most of what you said except for the comparison to A New Hope which I feel isn't really a war movie at all, the setting for one is not on the entirely battling planet, but multiple different spaces and involving many different characters that aren't constantly in the midst of combat.
But back to the show, it's a trailer focusing on the main story arc, so I don't see how it couldn't be fairly serious with perhaps just varying degrees of "dark and gritty", but where I agree with you is when the show actually plays out and could focus on some more emotional varied stories - totally not against that. For a trailer though, I'm not at all surprised that one focusing on the central theme of the war would look and feel the way it does now.
