Energon does not look better. That's an insult to Polygon. But, man, thanks so much for playing.

Not for nothing, but if character models are based on the toy's CAD files then I don't think Elita is a Chromia repaint like we're all assuming.

Maybe a retool...or possibly even based on the Arcee mold.

I'm still waiting for a Windblade from the Siege Seeker mold given how most of the alt is a backpack and thus could be swapped out pretty easily.

Really could do Elita as well given how they've redefined her as a jet the last few years.

The animation looks much more polished than it did in the first trailer. However, the slavish adherence to the toys results in some distracting backpacks and peg holes on the characters. I’m still iffy on the voice acting, but Megatron sounds pretty good. It’s almost like a mix of BW and TFP Megatron.

And this photo is where my issue with the designs come in: Their vehicle modes are hardly Cybertronian or alien. This almost looks like it could be somewhere in a desert on earth. As I’ve said before, I really feel High Moon Studios raised the bar on the pre-earth TF designs in the Cybertron games. It’s too bad Hasbro was so uncreative with the designs.

Not watching the new trailer because it’s probably spoilers galore knowing Netflix. Anyways, skimmed through it and I’m able to see that the animation has definitely improved. This show probably won’t be bad but I don’t think it will be great either.

Agreed, the High Moon stuff was amazing. This does come off much less creative but that's because they use the toys, and the toys likely looked so human so that kids could wrap their minds around them and want them (with no media running parallel to the toy releases to push them) is my guess. Shame.

I'm taking a little break from the forums for a couple weeks, but I thought I'd pop in and give my two cents about this trailer while it's fresh.

I think the animation is looking pretty good. Sometimes the robots look a bit flat and cut out, but that doesn't hurt it too much. I don't think this is the most beautiful Cybertron I've seen, but it looks fine for what it is. I can overlook the budgetary limitations when it comes to the quality of the animation. The cinematography and the visuals seem pretty on-point, and those things (in my opinion) are the strongest points of these trailers.

The main problem I have with this trailer is the same problem I had with the first trailer...these designs are CAD renders of toys....and it shows. It's especially jarring since this show is supposed to be dark, violent, moody, and gritty. But they don't really look like proper characters to me, they just look like toys. I honestly find it a bit comical seeing these designs impaled on stakes and whatnot. It doesn't come across as scary or edgy, it just looks like Sid from Toy Story got his hands on some Transformer toys. I'm not trying to be snide or hyperbolic by saying that...I just can't help but picture that when I watch this trailer. The best thing I can say about these designs is that tight shots of the faces usually look pretty good.

I might check this out if the story is said to be phenomenal (like, among the best storytelling in the brand). I think it's completely fine if someone wants to overlook these designs. Of if someone legitimacy enjoys these designs...obviously a lot of people here seem fine with them. But I place a lot of importance on appealing art design. I really don't want to look at these particular designs for multiple hours unless the storytelling is a masterpiece. I'm sort of holding out hope that there'll be some sort of Lego Movie-esque twist that justifies these toy designs within the context of the story. I guess we'll see.

Can't believe I'm defending Energon but here we are. WFC is undoubtedly technically superior due to being 15 years newer than Energon.

That said, there's much more visual interest in your average Energon shot than what we've seen of this show so far, even excluding Energon's occasional traditionally-animated segments. Energon is bright, colorful, and detailed in ways other than random scratches and shit on the characters. I don't have to squint to make out what the fuck is going on in Energon (not that you can really tell what the fuck is going on in Energon anyways).

This WFC show falls for the fallacy that making your show visually dark makes it tonally or thematically dark which isn't true, in fact it actually does the opposite by going so over the top to being ridiculous. WFC looks washed out, melodramatic, murky. Even without the droning, plodding dialogue I'd be put to sleep by the visuals alone.
