Why are you here if you don’t care about the game and aren’t going to play it then? What constructive criticisms can you offer to a discussion if you haven’t played it? Two of the people disagreeing with me on this thread have told me they haven’t played the game. If you aren’t going to play it then that’s totally fine man! But I just don’t understand why you’re determined to write multiple lengthy paragraphs about why you hate something you haven’t even experienced.

Because of what this game represents in the bigger picture. Even after 'cleaning up' the review bombing of the game, on metacritic the game still sits pretty unevenly between the critics calling this game near perfect and the users saying its anything but.

We're nearing week 2 of this game being out and so far public opinion on it still hasn't improved all that much.

And I don't see what the gameplay has to add to a mainly story driven game. Especially when from all I've seen, it is legitimately the same thing as the first. But with a rope added. Wow, that was totally worth SEVEN YEARS and ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS to develop.

Well when you live on a certain part of the internet, you’ll only see one view of something. I happen to have seen lots of love for the game from a lot of people, and all of my friends who played it have either liked it or loved it. But I also recognize that there’s a lot of people who don’t like it. So it’d say it’s maybe 50/50 people who dislike/like it.

You act like the only thing they improved was the rope. You can go prone now, dodge, jump, use explosive arrows, add a fire spread to shotgun ammo. There’s tons of crazy additions to the gameplay that make it really great.

Im just wondering what this game did to make you hate it so much lol

That statement goes both ways, y'know.

    Wow, you can jump.

Like, oh my god if you have to tout jumping as a "major improvement" in this day in age...

Ever hear of a game called Depression Quest?

Got rave reviews from all the major outlets, as well as a ton of hate from actual regular people, too.

    Sound familiar?

I recognize that the opposing sides goes both ways, which is why I said 50/50.

I just can’t see how this game could be so offensive to you lol. It’s a game.

I couldn't give less of a shit about the game itself.

I give a shit about the precedent it sets in terms of how much studios can tell their fans to fuck off and somehow nobody sees a problem with this behavior being treated as healthy in any industry.

It happened with Star Wars, it happened with Dr. Who, and now it's happening with video games with TLOU2. How long until it hits something like Transformers again, since that basically WAS Age of Extinction?

If you don’t care then why hate so much?

In what way has Naughty Dog told its fans that? Lol

They killed Joel by having him basically blab a bunch of information to people he didn't know, then executed him brutally with a golf club.

People knew Joel was gonna die in TLOU2. But instead of a heroic death that actually would have satisfied fans like, say, him taking a killing blow meant for Ellie, he is crippled and then beaten by a character that literally nobody likes and the game straight up refuses to let the player actually kill.

Oh, and then you have to play as the character literally nobody likes as the game tries to make you have any kind of sympathy. And for the most part, it fails miserably. And this is why the game doesn't let the player decide to kill Abby or not in the end, because they knew the player absolutely would kill her despite what the story was trying to say.

It doesn't fucking matter what the story is trying to say, the game forces people to watch a beloved character die, then forces them to play as that character's killer trying to make them seem at all decent (and fails), and then the final part of the game is a complete bait and switch because in the end, Abby lives even though up until that actual point, Ellie was dead set on killing her. And she still loses everything despite not killing Abby, so pretty much the game completely shits on Ellie as if she had fucking killed Abby, so why not simply code two endings, one where Abby dies and one where Abby lives? At least give players the satisfaction of killing the bitch, but they couldn't even give them that.

How would you know it fails if you never played it?

Not every character needs a “badass heroic death” lol. Joel wronged many people and had it coming. If you think Joel deserved a good death after playing the first game, then I’m sorry to say that I think you completely misunderstood that game and it’s intentions.

Now I understand why you wouldn’t want to play as Abby, I hated playing as Abby at first too. But the whole point is that you realize that Abby isn’t so different from Ellie or Joel. Abby and Levs relationship mirrors Joel and Ellie’s in the first game, which makes you begin to care for them.

This game forces you to go places that no other game has, and it makes you uncomfortable. A game being that powerful just shows how effective the writers and crew were in setting out what they wanted to do. I love that about Part II, it’s really powerful.

I’d love to have a serious, civil discussion with you. But you clearly are mad over something you didn’t play. And I think calling Abby a “b*tch” is pretty immature for a grown man. So I think I’m going to leave this thread now. Thank you for listening to my side and take care!

The first game is one of my favorites games ever. I have also played the 2nd. I completely agree with you. I think the story as a whole is good. I think I would change around some of the flash back placements. Abby’s part of the game was the better half to me. Like the first game I don’t see a “villain” in this game. Abby, Ellie and Joel all have done bad things. Joel is a villain to Abby, Abby is a villain to Ellie. It’s a circle. I still think the first game is better but Part 2 is still a great game. I would give it a B+. It lived up to my expectations.

I hope to see a Part 3. I think Ellie story is still open. I think the best way to continue is to do a massive time leap. Like 10 years.

Its not respect to Joel I was talking about, its respect to the audience.

Fail to understand that and you'll never understand why people hate this game.

You keep going on about this so I have to ask you something. In this day and age, where people stream entire playthroughs of games and every cinematic invariably ends up on youtube, why does someone have to play a game in order to be allowed to have an opinion on it's story?

Personally I never saw the appeal to Twitch and YouTube play throughs. You don’t get the full experience. I would rather just play the game myself. I am also one who isn’t into sports.

Joe's take on the how things should have unfolded leading to Joel's death would've made more damn sense. 6/10 makes sense.

So after sitting down and having some time away from the game after finishing my first play through I think I have a solid opinion on the story to express.
Part 2 story is good but it isn’t amazing like the first. Overall my opinion of the game is more in the positive but I don’t think it’s a masterpiece like the first. Part 2 story is to focused on plot where Part 1 was focused on character. I prefer the focus on character that the first game had. Part 1 feels like a tv show which makes sense why it’s being adapted as a show. The “chapters” felt like self contained episodes with special guests that ultimately ended with a season finally that wrapped up the story of its leads. Part 2 doesn’t pace itself as well as the first. It feels like 2 movies that end with a tv episode to wrap the whole thing up. Ellie story is basic. I didn’t grow to fond of her story’s new characters. I didn’t hate them but I didn’t love them. They were there. Abby story was interesting and we get some of that character focus that the first game had. I enjoyed the characters Lev and Owen. Some characters like Manny I didn’t care for and felt more satisfied with their deaths. I think the plot tackled to much in Part 2 and it hurt itself. There is a good mix of great and mediocre parts to Part 2 story. It’s far from dogshit that haters are saying it is. It’s still above average for a video game story. I think Part 2 gameplay is great and does subtle improvements that aren’t as noticeable at first. Part 2 has a lot of cool showcase moments especially in the Abby parts. In the end I think the game is great but it isn’t the masterpiece that some are saying and it isn’t the worst thing ever like others are saying. If Part 3 happens I hope they go back to basics with the story. Build great characters first and throw them in this messed up world.

I enjoyed TLOU2. I just started my second play through (+ Mode). Problem is, I don’t really know where to rate it yet. The first game’s story was great, but there’s a lot to unpack with the second one. It’s definitely depressing on a number of levels. The ending left me feeling numb, then I started thinking about the notion of vengeance and how all-consuming it can be. I actually had a difficult time sleeping the night that I beat it because I was going over several plot points in my head. My feeling right now is that the game is great episodically. I just don’t know how to feel about the storyline as a whole. It makes me wish I could rearrange a few things like cutscenes and flashbacks, or an option for Ellie and Abby to have separate campaigns so players can choose which path to take.
