I've been reorganizing my Classics/Generations collection recently and have come to the conclusion that I really don't like Micromasters. They're just boring and tiny and have no personality. However, that doesn't mean I'm uninterested in owning these characters. I know there have been occasions where we've gotten Micromasters, typically as redecos, in the main scales (Scout, Deluxe, and up) and was wondering if there's a comprehensive list of these toys. Here's a few I know of: Universe Countdown (redeco of Cybertron Defense Red Alert) Universe Treadbolt (redeco of Classics Jetfire) Universe Dropshot (redeco of Cybertron Defense Scattorshot, though with inaccurate colors) Universe Stormcloud (redeco of Universe Powerglide) Movie Big Daddy (redeco of Cybertron Downshift) hmmmm, I guess this was a specific thing in Universe '08. Anything else fit with these guys?
Universe Overload (same mold as Dropshot) resembles G1 Flak quite well. There's also the officially-Flak Botcon 2009 Flak, which looks less like Flak than Overload does. Confusing. Similarly the 2007 Movie Mudflap, redeco of Cybertron Mudflap, was intended to be Erector but they couldn't use the name.
Universe Powerglide white version is pretty much Hothouse. No real good reason for it to exist otherwise.
Pretty sure Toyhax even has a conversion set to make him even more Hot House! Good call. I guess it should be mentioned the characters from other continuities that have taken G1 Micromaster names and gone on to become the more iconic incarnations. The ones who come to mind are Barricade, Blackout (I'd love a "G1-styled Blackout) and RID '15 Fixit.
I’m doing the same, with Countdown and Flakverload already in my mitts and Tread Bolt on his way. I’m not sure I’ll bother tracking down Stormcloud though, as he’s a bit of a mess, with Whisper’s colours, Stormcloud’s name and Tailwind’s body. White Powerglide as Hot House is a hard maybe though. Oh, and I also gave CW Ironhide a new head to turn him into Tote as well. There is a Mudslinger in PCC, but he looks pretty crap. There’s a redeco in more Mudslingery colours with a different name (of course) but it’s still not great. Tote, Flak, Tread Bolt, and waaaay at the back, Countdown. Also, if you're okay with repurposing, the G2 Stunticons make for a remarkably good Detour, Hyperdrive and Roadhugger (though Roadhugger, like Blackjack, never grew up as tall as the others. Aw)
I've been wanting Hasbro to repaint Cybertron Evac as Blazemaster for years but he's close enough to repurpose. I'd love Siege Ironhide or Titans Return Kup retooled as Roughstuff and Erector. POTP Windcharger retooled as Roadhandler, Hyperdrive, Motorhead, Roadhugger and Skystalker. There is a Shapeways head for Roadhandler. I did customise Energon Optimus Prime as Overload. There are the Fansproject scout versions of Growl and Fireshot. I'd happily accept a repaint of CHUG Scoop as Knockout. Any Hot Rod toy can count. I wish the new Ironworks had a head closer to the G1 toy instead of the faceplate and visor.
I’m not the biggest fan of straight-up repurposing figures as other characters unless there seemed to be some intent by the designers for there to be an homage, but if there are any good ideas for a Roadhandler and a Stakeout I’d be all over them.
I don't get this disconnect. You don't like MMs, and think they have no personality...BUT You want LARGER TOYS OF THESE NON-CHARACTERS? Why? I'm just curious. Personally, I love the little guys. And I hope Hasbro/TT make them for years to come! they probably won't though....
I think he means the figures have no personality- I agree for the most part; as a big fan of Micromasters I’ve been hugely disappointed in the WFC ones. For the most part, aside from maybe level of detailing, I’d say the originals are almost universally better. the WFC MMs have just been really, really dull (not to mention a complete ripoff at $10)
But they have better articulation, you can give them the personality they supposedly lack through posing. I love that I can make the Battle Squad attack my MP-36 (Yes, I put my WFC MMs in with my MPs!) If I tried that with the G1 Direct-Hit & Power Punch...They could stand there...I guess...and raise their arms impotently? But the WFC MMs, can be put into ACTION POSES! Plus some can turn their heads, how many g1's could do that? And then there's the weapons fire effects parts... A few can even hold guns! 1 or 2, but still... $10usd is a bit steep but I've been paying ebay prices though, as I love the little buggers!
This is definitely a fair question. I would say the majority of MM characters I'd want are ones who have had some kind of feature in the fiction. Something like Roadhandler doing the wrestling or Stakeout for his role in Sins of the Wreckers. Though I'm also not opposed to getting other characters if the toys are good enough. And while I do find the toys boring, any character has the potential to be interesting if they're actually used in fiction. I'm always a proponent of utilizing the existing roster of characters before trying to create a new one. I'm glad a character like Fixit has had minor roles when creators didn't want to use Ratchet or First Aid for example.
But their size is also a feature. They interact with the bases Ironworks, Airwave, Scorponok (and any future ones). As for the fiction: I grew up reading the marvel g1 comics, and the micromasters were featured minimally, if at all. 1-2 issues. I've never seen an IDW comic in a [comic shop]. But I did get the thrilling 30/combiner wars pack ins. I couldn't tell you who's a micromaster in the ones I got, because I didn't recognize the characters. Now if some third party made some MP scale micromasters...fully articulated and retaining the transformation...I'd be broke.
Weirdly enough G2 Dead End makes for a pretty close Roadhandler. Apart from the massive Deceptibadge on his bonnet, but hey, doing a face-heel turn isn't unexpected for a wrestler, right?
He's got the wrong faction badge, but there was a movieverse repaint of Cybertron Mudflap that's pretty much Erector.
I believe that most of the takara PCC figures are specifically trying to be various micro masters. Maybe not all, but many.
