Shellforming has never been about the entirety of the alt-mode being a shell. Just having a significant chunk of alt-mode not being fully integrated into the robot design is enough.

It's all subjective, so you can be lenient if you want. But I'd personally say that if less than 40-50% of the alt mode is robot parts (or at least a transforming element, like weaponry), then I'd be ready to label the toy a shellformer.

Shellformer or not is irrelevant to me if I like both modes of the figure and the transformation. Siege seekers are awesome IMO and (again, IMO) look better in action poses on the shelf than the Earthrise mold. But that wont stop me from getting the main 3 in Earthrise just for the F15 modes alone :)

Shellformers are not inherently bad toys. I’ll swear by RotF Brawn and his redeco HftD Outback any day. They’re very much shellformers. Heck most of the bayverse cars end up wearing a significant chunk of auto body on their backs.

If the Siege Seekers are shellformers (and there is debate that), they’re well done.

Obviously this is not definitive. Shellformer is a fanterm. At the same time the problem with lacking an operational definition is that fanterms often tend to suffer from "mission creep" and start being misapplied (I think of a number of "Mary Sue" debates in other fandoms).

I think the takeaway from the ER screamer is the coneheads are very doable as demonstrated by the old deluxe. I dont think they were possible with Siege

It would have been tough. Getting that head to collapse into the body might have required some re-engineering. Getting the iconic wings to work for Dirge and Ramjet wouldn’t be that hard. Thrust would have been easy.

With all due respect I really can't see how they'll be able to top ER Optimus considering that it's already done a LOT to be a perfect G1 Optimus Prime update to the point of being a mini MP figure. Sure they could do away with the wheel kibble on his back but even then those aren't a big deal. It'd feel like a giant waste to use that slot for a new G1 Optimus Prime that doesn't do that much different instead of a character that hasn't got an update yet or at least have a redo to someone who really needs a redo. Like for example having a new Powermaster Optimus Prime that's more like the original toy/gimmick feature would be more welcomed to me.

As for ER Starscream likewise I can't see how he'd be topped other then give him more articulation. Unless we're talking about doing a version of G1 Starscream that has a F22 Raptor alt mode I can't see the need to revisit G1 Starscream again when his ER mold already did so much to fill that nostalgic void.

The ER Seeker was flawed from the start when they decided to essentially upscale and tweak the old classics version as the engineering limits the articulation and proportions. ER suffers from a similar issue as MP Hotrod, the torso comes off as a block with no abdomen. If they hadn't gone for the stupid crotch flap and gone for something more like leader prime it would have helped the proportions greatly. The lack of a waist or wrists is annoying but workable. The siege seeker is flawed too, but the torso proportions work far better. The siege also has a butterfly joint due to transformation that is absolutely amazing for posing the null rays. Ignoring the "battle damage" and transformation the only thing id take on the ER over the siege is the shoulder pads and null rays, the siege's just don't look right, and really sticks out when you have all 8. (Kinda hoping we get a ninth so I have an equal number of seekers flanking each side of Starscream). When all is said and done however I do think the ER mold will work far better for the coneheads, as they looked bulkier in the cartoon, than the standard seekers.

it's funny, I was never super crazy about the OG seeker mold (too small/short/bulky) but I freaking loved the Coneheads out of it.

I actually sold my Earthrise Starscream and replaced it with the Siege version.

Although the jet mode on ER is beautiful, the Siege version completely outclasses it in bot mode, but that's just my opinion.

I hate to beat the dead horse, but that stupid flap is infuriating to see. The colors look great otherwise, and I think I could deal with the fins on the feet. But I thought we were moving past that silly crotch flap.
