To get people riled up, so they get clicks. Well what’s canon and what isn’t, isn’t clear. From a toy perspective, or comic perspective it’s all “canon” now. It’s all melded together from a toy perspective and exists in a multiverse from a comic perspective. But if you are talking causal MOTU fans, they know Filmation. But one is no more canon than the other it doesn’t really exist that way in MOTU.
It’s how you create drama to get attention when you’re an Internet “news” organization. You just make shit up and say you have an “insider.” Or take some kernel of truth and wrap it in lies and exaggeration for clicks.
I'm pretty sure he was making jabs toward the She-Ra reboot, in which most of the villains are redeemed.
I think the new series should have at least a little camp besides the character names. But considering who some of the main writers were for the Filmation MOTU shows, I doubt it was always written to be as camp as it turned out. It's also worth keeping in mind how much comics, TV, and movie series can change in tone without ruining the continuity. Thor: Ragnarok worked. Aliens worked. Wrath of Khan worked. Vastly different takes on Doctor Who have worked.
In that comparison, I feel like the original Gojira is the mini-comics, serious and edgy. The later Godzilla movies are more Filmation.
I expected that after he killed pretty much every employee he would just take the burgers and not pay for them... Good example. I was never a big fan of the show mind you but even I felt the dissonance... the new season was so needlessly dark and bloody. Why did we need Jack killing those girls, than the last one falling in love with the murderer of his sisters? It did feel like fanfic. And compared to seasons of waiting for that final battle, Aku went out pitifully. Made me wonder why anyone feared this guy at all... Oh yeah I got that. I found it hilarious that even My Little Pony- Friendship is Magic did not redeem all its villains (in fact, one got basically destroyed) but She-Ra of all thing did redeem all but one...
Two, actually. Maybe three. Spoiler Even the show runners don't consider Shadow Weaver redeemed, since that would require that she actually changed in any meaningful way or made efforts to atone. Instead she never acknowledged the bad things she did as anything more than "a few mistakes" and blew herself up without ever making an attempt to change, because she never thought she did anything wrong. Hordak didn't really get a chance at a proper redemption since the show ended, the audience is just left to assume something will be done later. The show even lampshades it with Mermista questioning if they're all okay with that whole situation. Apparently supposedly the official stance is that he'll be sent into exile on Beast Island.
Bingo. Yeah some episodes got dark but then you get silly episodes like the fairy tale episode. The show could still be watched by all ages. Then now the last season is a blood filled adult aimed show. So in streaming sites it goes from kids show to adult show in the last season. HBO max has the show in the adult swim section when 99% of the show was aimed at kids and teens. They should have just rebooted it.
Yeah, they made a mistake with the final season of Samurai Jack. I read that Tartakovsky chose to make it "more mature" than the previous seasons because he was aiming it at the kids/teens who watched the original show from 2001-2004 that would now be young adults by the time this aired in 2017. He wanted the show to age with the original audience. Seeing as he decided to do a continuation... I can kind of understand where he's coming from as I can't imagine a final season thirteen years later would attract new blood. But, as you said, the better approach probably would have been to just do a reboot instead of trying to finish a series so long after it had been off the air.
Although assuming that's asked in as good a faith as its likely to be; to my knowledge there are in fact two He-Man cartoons planned for Netflix (unless something changed) that will run on different lines. One is being done by Kevin Smith as a continuation of the original Filmation series to presumably wrap it up. The other one, if there is still another one, I presume will be a reboot for new fans.
I am not expecting anything revolutionary from Kevin Smith regarding He-Man’s sexual-orientation. I expect this to be a pretty color by numbers sort of program... that being said he lined-up some top-tier voice talent so I am expecting it to be fun. Regarding LGBT stuff there are plenty of fans in that camp and I think MOTU could represent them without making it the entire focus of the show. One of the best things about 200X is most of its mythos was incorporated into the larger MOTU universe because expanding the mythos was the point. Which is something I cannot say I expect to be happening with Netflix She-Ra. Which also is at the end of the day somewhat of a failing. It all feels a little bit like segregation. Netflix She-Ra was such a big departure from the established universe that it’s its own “thing.” Which I have stated is actually fine and within keeping of the broader brand. What’s unfortunate is we didn’t end up with any established LGBT characters in the universe. They exist, but apart, which is a shame.
It's a little disappointing that Mattel will probably not incorporate anything of Netflix She-Ra in future MOTU projects, because it really did some interesting things. Like the idea of past She-Ra's and the implications of She-Ra as a guardian spirit of the planet (much like the history of King Grayskull and his connection to He-Man).
Honestly I haven’t watched the Netflix show. If it was attached to the continuity I would have. I respect Noelle I am a “comic guy” my daughters read Lumberjanes but the show just didn’t appeal to me but it doesn’t need to either. I never expected to be the target audience. She-Ra interests me insomuch as she is He-Man’s twin-sister. At some point I may give it a try but given it’s, its own thing and seemingly not looking to expand upon what’s already been set up I am less likely to commit the time. Which is my outsiders criticism. If she wanted to put in the legwork into fitting this story into the existing framework she might have garnered some additional viewers. But she wanted to create her own thing reflecting her own human condition and I support and appreciate it but I am not trying to consume it.
Some strange trademarks, some don't apply to He-Man, but others are? Could just be regular toys with no connection to media.
