Netflix's Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Show Adds Six More Cast Members

Geoff Stults as Chalmers, who used to work as a detective with Jet Black in the ISSP's Homicide Division. Now he's dating Jet's ex-wife.

Tamara Tunie (Law & Order) plays Ana, a cool and intense woman who runs Mars' hottest underground jazz club and sort of plays the role of a surrogate mom to Spike.

Mason Alexander Park (appearances in the national touring company of Hedwig and the Angry Inch) as Gren, Ana's right-hand man.

Rachel House (Topaz in Thor Ragnarok) is Mao, the cunning capo of the Syndicate's White Tigers family.

Ann Truong (Strikeback!) and Hoa Xuande (Top of the Lake) play Shin and Lin, the fiercely loyal henchmen of Alex Hassell's Vicious, as he aims to take down Spike Spiegel.

"The character of Gren is being reimagined as nonbinary, with nonbinary actor Mason Alexander Park taking on the role" This is both super cringe and also pretty disrespectful and gross when you take into account who Gren is.

For anyone unfamiliar with the character: Gren is a man who was thrown in prison and subjugated to hormonal experiments, causing him to grow a pair of breasts. This is revealed when he's in the middle of taking a shower and Faye tries to ambush him, who gets confused and at first thinking he was a woman pretending to be a man before she looks down and realizes he's got male genitalia.

Later he takes advantage and disguises himself as a woman in order to approach the man who betrayed and threw him in prison in the first place.

So to take that and turn a male victim into a "nonbinary" doesn't just screw with the plot but it erases the victimhood of a male prisoner.

But why am I not surprised that Netflix is doing something like that? This should give those of you still on the fence a hint in regards to how much the blackhole brains in charge off this project care about the source material.

So at the very least we will get some decent music out of this.

I'd say they look like they're cosplaying, but I have seen cosplayers with better costumes.

I feel like I am getting so tired of adaptations that just flippantly disregard the identity and appeal of what they're adapting.

I'm keeping an open mind since the writing could be good and the music most certainly will, but even the idea of a live-action Cowboy Bebop is folly IMO. CB was influential for its amazing visual storytelling as an animated medium. Live action and animation are not interchangeable, and what works in one may not work in another.

"Thing you love minus all the things you love" is becoming an old song.

We can barely see the Netflix version, and certainly not in proper lighting. And they're obviously not going for direct translations, anyways.

Spike's suit, being the most iconic outfit of the trio, looks the part, at least.

Sometimes, though, you have to appreciate that it's an attempt to branch out the material and reach a new audience, rather than necessarily recapture the original audience.

For sure, there's always the apprehension that the new adaptation won't capture the spirit of the original, but you have to approach with a certain level of open-mindedness.

However, I never see this level of apprehension in regards to Japanese live-action remakes/reproductions of anime/manga. Those can be just as silly, and deviate from the source material just as badly as the Americanized versions.

We're talking about the same company that made American Death Note.
