    Sorry to bump this thread.

TRU has these on clearance here for 40 due to damaged boxes. Figured I’d pick the last one up, even though parts were floating around loose in the box. Staff wouldn’t sell it to me for 40, insisted it was 90. Don’t feel like getting into an argument over a toy, and not willing to pay 90 for this, so he ended up back on the shelf. But I digress...

My real question is, what is the deal with these guys?

I'm guessing a scam, but given the QC on mine I'd say that's a fair price.

Was bored so I modded Ironhide’s ankles to get a bit more pivot. It gives him more ankle movement but once the leg kibble is in place it’s still kinda limited. I’m glad I did it but I’m not sure I’d say everyone should run out and do it:

So was there ever an improved KO of this guy that’s not oversized?

For some reason no. There was the KO that's exactly the same as the official (factory rejects?) and the black mamba version in super-duper-bigger-than-anything-official scale, but for no 1:1 KO that has better paint and/or other improvements.

There's been 1:1 KOs with varying improvements for all of the MPM figures except Ironhide and I'm not sure why as he probably needs it the most. My official is complete ass, QC issues galore. Surely there's a market for it.

At $50 on BBTS, I keep thinking about getting this guy. I didn't realize the ankle tilt is so limited though. That is really my only complaint about the SS toy...and this one doesn't appear all that much better on that front. Of course, he is only $20 more than the SS, which sounds like a no-brainer on paper...

I wonder if it's because he would need so much rework to improve that it's taking companies longer...
I think that's a great price for him. If you can get past the small gaps in truck mode (which aren't nearly as bad as mpm4 imo) and use his chest movement as part of his shoulder articulation, I think he's worth it.

That’s pretty much what I was thinking. Plus, as much as I dislike modding my figures, for $50 I wouldn’t feel as bad about carving him up a little to improve things. He does at least look awesome in bot mode!

There’s that weijiang one but it’s such an overhaul that it’s basically a new figure, which is also why it’s not out yet. Also I think WJ changed their name or something? It’s hard to keep up with the 3P drama sometimes.
He has SOME ankle tilt, which is more than the ss. Plus no bumper belt :)

So I want to try a mod on my ironhide but I'm a little scared. I want to take the shoulder kibble (that forms the windshield and top of the cab), take it off and reattach it to the shoulder pads. That way they would stay out of the way of the arms more, fill out the back more, and rely less on the PERFECT positioning of the arms for the alt mode to come together perfectly. I'd probably saw off the assembly (with the hinges) and reattach using a ball joint or something. Can anyone thing of a way this would mess everything up? I'm wondering if it'll still be possible to position the arms properly for alt mode if I add an extra joint in there. Thoughts?

Personally? I think you should leave it as is.
For a figure that was plague with SOOOOO MANNY issues, just be grateful that you have a good one that you can manage to transform successfully. That's how I see it.

I have the Takara version, and it isn't without its flaws; but I can now transform it back and forth with no issues, and I LOVE it.
I wouldn't want to jeopardize that for a few more clicks of articulation.

    Again, that's just me.

My immediate concern is just making sure the shoulder/bicep section can still fit in there, as the positioning is important to just get the clearance for his arms in alt mode in the first place. The balljoint would need to go in the exact spot that the shoulder/bicep needs to go in alt mode based on that picture, unless I’m looking at it wrong.

I know, I'm just as tempted to mod it as I am to leave it alone. Mine works relatively well, plus I have the DNA kit (which I also modded a tad) so he's really stable. I want to reengineer so many of the aspects of this figure so badly but I don't have the time or the talent that someone like Black Apple has so all I have are minor mods.
Yeah I think you may be right. I'm not sure how I would be able to maintain the clearance necessary to transform properly. I'm going to transform him later today and investigate further.

It might be possible to implement a triple hinge or slider system between the windshield and the bicep as there seems to be a decent amount of space there in vehicle mode. It’s just mounting it on the shoulder itself or its resting spot that would have issues, I think.

Transform him back to alt mode and make sure the place you want to attach the new joint isn't taken up by anything else. As long as that spot is empty in both modes, and that clearance isn't needed for transformation, then you should be good to go. I don't have the figure so I can't give you any specific notes

Is the DNA kit worth it for this figure? I can't find it in stock anywhere besides chinese sellers on eBay.

OK I'll try that. I have mini hinges too that are only like 1mm thin so those could work too, but getting them over the DNA kit is what will be the other challenge since I still want to use that.
Some would say it's necessary. I think you can get a lot out of the figure without it but you need to have a copy that's QC free which is rare. The DNA kit isn't perfect but it works really well for what it is. I just don't like that he's a partsformer now, I basically have to leave the kit pieces off when I transform him.

I will never transform him back into truck mode again. The panel fiddling is not worth it for the end result. I'd sacrifice the transformation for a solid bot mode.
