I was articulating why I liked the fact that KOTM's designs took the original Toho designs and put them through the lens of real animal anatomy; I have a degree in Zoology and like seeing creature designs that pay attention to the anatomy of real-life animals. Come back when you've got something intelligent to say.

Can't see the Dorito resemblance - he looks more like a kite with arms, legs and missile launchers to me.

No need to get touchy, it was just a joke-not a very good one I admit, but hey life's full of disappointment (like my son)
    (that's another joke.)

If I'm being honest I think there's nothing wrong with having a degree in zoology. If anything it seems like an interesting career path.

    Yeah - I'm sorry I overreacted.

Also, Starscream just as much looks like a kite as he does a Dorito - and arguing semantics is really a pointless thing to do.

Would he be cool ranch or spicy nacho? His colors says cool ranch, but his hot temper argues for spicy nacho.

So, I've skimmed through this thread a bit and thought I'd give my two cents. I think people often are too unfair towards the movie designs. I have no problem with those who simply dislike the designs because of their aesthetic "busyness" and being unable to tell them apart. That's all valid criticism. What I was always peeved by was the fact that many hate them for being a departure from the originals. Literally everything after G1 has been a departure to an extent.

I never hear people screaming about how unrecognizable this guy is from the original.

Maybe you could argue that the storytelling is better, but if we're basing it solely on design alone I don't see the difference.

I also saw some Godzilla comparisons made here. I'd say 1998 Godzilla is a good example of what I'm talking about: A stark contrast to the original, but a great and interesting design in its own right. Hell, many G-fans shun this guy too, and I think it's a bit unwarranted.

In conclusion, I think people shouldn't judge a design based entirely on similarities to its predecessor, but on its own merits. Thanks for coming to the TedTalk no one asked for lol.

Same character. Same continuity. You can reinvent and revamp the classic characters without making them look like utter hot trash.

Probably because no one make a thread praising them either? :p

And that Godzilla is hated not just because of it's design, but because of how the US adaptation of that particular Godzilla nothing more than oversized lizard. It's since such nicknamed as "Zilla", because it doesn't live up to the "God" part of "God"zilla.

Most of the hatred stems from how he acts, not how he looks. I'd be fine with a horizontal Godzilla - hell, Toho have considered it at one time or another - but at least have him act like fucking Godzilla.

Also, the commonest retort here is "the movie designs should be more faithful"; I've decided to make a thread giving my own two cents on this matter.

Modernisations and faithfulness in Transformers designs

But that's exactly what I said, "but because of how the US adaptation of that particular Godzilla nothing more than oversized lizard."

He act nothing like Godzilla, doesn't even live up to the "God" in "Godzilla" name, he (or she for the first half) is basically just an overgrown lizard, you can change the movie title with generic reptile name and it won't change anything.

It's a bloody good adaptation of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.

Exactly, people hate him because he is nothing "God", just overgrown, oversized, sad lizard who got killed by measly missiles.

I think what the movies did with the Constructicons was really cool. I love how they took that alien look and cranked it up to 11 and gave each of them a unique design. Although their roles in the movie show otherwise, their designs are oozing with personality.

When you look at G1 Devastator, none of his components really stand out as their own characters. Scavenger in G1 is seen as “the right arm” and nothing more. The movie Constructicons are each distinct within their own right and aren’t just seen as “Devastator’s piece.“ The combiner is more of a cherry on top of this bloodthirsty warrior entourage sundae. I hope that level of originality carries over to the new movie series.

I feel that isn't fair to the G1 Constructicons simply because you're judging designs that are about forty years old and are extremely blocky.

That, and you obviously never played Transformers: Devestation.

The alien look on them is what I liked the most. Rampage and Demolishor as the most unique.

The highlight for me is that they actually incorporate parts of their vehicles into weapons. Rampage using his treads as whips and Mixmaster using his mixing drums as shields is fucking genius and I wish more transformers did that.

I hear you-I actually don't care for that Soundwave design, and couldn't stand the fact he couldn't talk, as well as some aspects of TFP past the first few episodes. I get what they were going for (the silent terrifying potential backstabber persona), but still.

Some of the bayverse designs I like-however, it's not just people who've had issues with them-even some of the rendering computers at ILM did, literally burning up, and breaking, which Bay even bragged about-see for yourself:
1)Michael Bay Says Transformers Visual Effects Break ILM Computers
2)Revenge of the Fallen Special Effects burn out ILM Mainframes - Transformers News - TFW2005
    3)https://geektyrant.com/news/2009/6/...-up-industrial-light-and-magics-hardwar.html;
4)My own personal experience - I actually DREW 2 Bayverse-style OCs (Original Characters) for a couple of art commissions I had in the past (see enclosed at the bottom-click to enlarge). Everytime after I went back to each one (after all the lineart had been done), to add the colors and shading and whatnot, you know what happened? My tablet froze up (a Samsung Galaxy Tab S), then took a long time to open the files. Why? Because I was pushing the hardware past what it is used to. I'm not making this up-one time, when opening up one of them, I had to wait nearly 2 minutes for the image to finish opening before I could build layers on top of it. In contrast, when I drew non-Bayverse style characters, guess what happened? The aforementioned issues didn't exist.

So, in closing, those of us who aren't and weren't fond of the bay designs, aren't just speaking out of frustration. . .And neither were the people who got tired of the bayverse, especially the ones who had checked out and went MIA when TLK came and tanked, killing the bayverse, and then causing Hasbromount to be scared into a G1esque direction with any following media. BB was a good movie, but this continued G1ized direction may eventually backfire.

I can't speak on the Godzilla situation, though. . .
